I assume you cleaned it with a bucket overflow? What kind of sand did you use? Please let us know when it clears up.

    Plecos

It is refreshing to hear about a bit of honest advice from your LFS. I'm by no means saying they're all compulsive liars, but they are in the sales business after all. I was sold some Chinese Algae eaters to combat my algae problem but they omitted to tell me that they grow to be massive...

    Plecos

I would like to get some Otos and I live in a hard water area (or so I'm told). Wouldn't the aquatic centre have the same water hardness if it is in your area? Where do you live?

    Tank Over 350L Upstairs?

I was looking to get a 5 footer for my first floor lounge so I asked the bloke who does all my building work and he said it should be fine. I got a 450L which is sat in the garage downstairs. It really is big when you see it in person so I asked him yesterday to have another look while he was...

This Forum Is Addictive - I Was Overstocked

I know what you mean, I would love another tank. It opens up loads more stocking options, especially if it's bigger. What did you get then?

Starting My Own Aquatics Centre :)

So, pretty much doomed then! It must be a nice feeling to be your own boss though. I wonder if you would still keep fish at home? If you do take the plunge, I sincerely hope it works out for you.

    Monitoring Co2 Levels.

If my house ever stops falling to bits I plan to upgrade my fishtank and attempt a more concerted effort at growing plants. I think a lo-tech/low maintenance setup would suit me best. Not quite Walstad lo-tech but I would prefer not to use any pressurised co2 systems as the cost outweighs the...

Which Air Pump And Air Stone (Led)?

The LED ones you mentioned seem a bit gimmicky but they might be okay. I've never had the need for an air pump but I gather the critical factor is noise, in which case the Eheims have a very good rep. If you like the lighting effect, those moonlight kits on ebay look nice.

What Are These Disgusting Freaks Of Nature?

Yeah, I have done. Thanks. I wonder if fish would eat them if they were submerged. More than likely.

    Dark Waters

On closer inspection, both bulbs have discolouration at the ends. Not surprising really since they're the original ones. I've ordered a new set so I'll see if they fix the problem. Thank you for your response, most obliged.

    Best Algae Eaters?

When I had an algae outbreak, I was recommended Chinese Algae Eaters to abate the problem. They cirtainly did that, but now they're fully grown, they're the terror of the tank and they don't bother much with the algae too. This is common knowledge to me now of course so I would advise to avoid...

What Are These Disgusting Freaks Of Nature?

Sorry, wrong picture... Just noticed these the other day and was quite appalled. I'm guessing they're something to do with apple snails since they're the only addition to the tank in about a year. Do they hatch or something? Do they jump out and hug your face? Urgh. Not impressed.

Very unusual for cats to like water. Sorry to hear about your cat, we've had two that suffered the same fate unfortunately. Fantastic photo btw.

    Dark Waters

My lights went out the other day and I'm hoping it's just a bulb but I don't have a spare to test for a faulty one. That's of course if it is the bulb. I checked the plug fuse (no joy) so if it's the balast, I might have to attempt a diy fix. (not usually a skill I possess). Neither of them...

    Pets Eating Fish Food

I woudn't even consider an open top as we've got 3 cats and they tend to jump on the lid. Yesterday I just had the balast unit on while I was outside scrubbing my flaps. Ahem. Anyway, if any of them did decide to jump up, I would find it hard not to laugh cos there's nothing worse than a wet...

    [Tutorial] Diy Python System

The Aqueon system and the other commercial equivalents utilise a venturi system which causes a vacuum via a constant water flow. They use a similar system in labs to desicate crystals. The Diy system here uses a powerhead, but you can use y-splitter hose adapter instead of the Aqueon waterbed...

    External Filters

If the hose somehow became detatched during the night I would need some size bucket. I arranged the home insurance yesterday and, surprisingly, there was no section on aircraft crashing into the house. Fingers crossed then. Ice Hockey

I did my schooling in Ontario in the early nineties during a golden age of the NHL so I was a leafs fan by proxy. I had no real interest in (ice) hockey at the time but it's rather unavoidable. In this country I've seen the Durham Wasps and Whitley bay Arsegoblins but nothing matches the NHL for...

    External Filters

I've had my original Juwel filter for years but a lot of you are championing the use of externals. This makes sense to me as it liberates space in the tank and maintenance seems to be simpler. What I would like to know is; is there ever a risk of flooding with external filters?

    [Tutorial] Diy Python System

I live in a townhouse and my tank is on the first floor so water changes involve me trecking up or downstairs with full buckets numerous times. I am wanting a bigger tank, so this is going to be even more laborious. Since I have gravity on my side, I can't believe I never thought of this...

    "new" Tank

That's not a bad idea as African cichlids would probably uproot them anyway. In fact, I would consider leaving your 55 gal as a dedicated cichlid tank as you've got a few of the more aggressive types in there, especially if they're a breeding pair. If it's a standard size 55 gal then I...

This hobby can be as expensive as you like I suppose. One thing's for certain, you made a good decision to join this forum as it is a veritable mine of information and will undoubtedly help you with your new hobby. "new" Tank

Really impressive, you've done a good job on the decor, I like the look of the moon sand. Those tigers are a good size and that yellow lab is stunning. Jogger's Nipple

We're getting the house rewired this week and my sparky wanted me to shift my tank to the other side of the room. Euthanasia

I can sympathise with your situation Krysta. Whenever I see a fish in distress, I always have an element of doubt before I condemn it to the clove oil. After keeping fish for a few years, I can honestly say I've only done this once though. I always get my wife to do it.
