The LED ones you mentioned seem a bit gimmicky but they might be okay. I've never had the need for an air pump but I gather the critical factor is noise, in which case the Eheims have a very good rep. If you like the lighting effect, those moonlight kits on ebay look nice.

On closer inspection, both bulbs have discolouration at the ends. Not surprising really since they're the original ones. I've ordered a new set so I'll see if they fix the problem. Thank you for your response, most obliged.

When I had an algae outbreak, I was recommended Chinese Algae Eaters to abate the problem. They cirtainly did that, but now they're fully grown, they're the terror of the tank and they don't bother much with the algae too. This is common knowledge to me now of course so I would advise to avoid...

Sorry, wrong picture... Just noticed these the other day and was quite appalled. I'm guessing they're something to do with apple snails since they're the only addition to the tank in about a year. Do they hatch or something? Do they jump out and hug your face? Urgh. Not impressed.
