    Flier Pics

Photos are great thanks, already showed my Mum, she's pleased they're settled in :good: Would you be tempted to let them have a go at raising the fry second or third time around? They are supposed to produce that mucus thing that discus do to feed the young.. or do all cichlids do that...

    Flier Cichlids

Hi, Just seeing if anyone is interested in these. I look after at the parents two spawning pairs of Archocentrus Centrarchus (Flyer Cichlids). I have only once seen these in the trade. They have got to be about 6-8 years old I reckon. They spawn regularly but the tank is a bit too small for...

    Discus Help

I have a similar problem but with 4 flier cichlids, they were fine for years living with 3 buenas aires tetra (I think or congo tetra something), the fliers would come to the edge of the tank no problems begging for food all the time. The tank is in the hall so they have plenty of movement all...

What Type Of Rocks Will Not Affect Hardness

Sounds like a good way to test them to me, or just use vinegar, if there's no foaming or small bubbles after a couple of minutes I'd say the possibility of leaching stuff into the water will be minimum.

    Trouble In The Tank

I had 5 Zebras once, one was a real bully and ended up killing most of the others until I re-homed him, maybe you just have one bad one??

    Arcadia Luminaires

Many of the Montipora genus of SPS corals do well under my T8's 4 x 34 Watt 16" deep tank, and they look great too, got plating and branching types, so T5's I'd guess they'd do even better.

    Cichlid Eggs, Won't Hatch

Thanks for that, I just had a look and the one is definately longer than the other one, but they both seem to be a similar width. It seems odd to me that two females would lay and guard eggs at all, especially the possibility of two sets of females doing the same thing. I think I'll keep...

    Cichlid Eggs, Won't Hatch

Thanks for the info, there does seem to be distinct sexual dimorphism between them, so I think they are proper pairs. I was wondering wether the elevated hardness produces a coating on the eggs that make it harder for the male to fertilize.? at least I now have a recommended hardness, does...

    Cichlid Eggs, Won't Hatch

Hi, I have a couple of pairs of Flier cichlids in a Rio 180 which take it in turn to spawn regularly. The annoying thing is I don't think the eggs are getting fertilised as after a few days they go white and then they clear them up. They are well practised and have had more than 10 batches of...

Bio Balls Cause High Nitrates Fact Or Fiction ?

What I'm saying is the 'surface', is not actually what you see, what is in contact with the water is such a tiny area of the rock, most of the oxygenated surface is actually the areas perpendicular to rocks visible surface., Like /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\, if you were to measure just the tips of the...

Bio Balls Cause High Nitrates Fact Or Fiction ?

Ok, so 1/4", it doesn't matter how deep, the point is it oxygen rich water will be passed into the rock to an extent by the animals living within in it. And we all know how porous LR is, with many holes and many sizes of holes, so the actual surface area of the rock is effectively multiplied...

Bio Balls Cause High Nitrates Fact Or Fiction ?

If you take the first 1/2 " into the rock as being rich in nutrient and oxygen, which is reasonable as LR has loads of holes easily big enough for oxygen and nutrient to get into, that's a huge surface area compared to what you can see on the surface. So most of the surface area is actually just...

Bio Balls Cause High Nitrates Fact Or Fiction ?

It seems like my first post has not been read?? It states why bio balls would produce nitrate in a form not readliy de-nitrated by the LR, i.e. into the free flowing water column, and not within the confines of a queing system within the rock. (see previous post) Also the link I posted shows...

    At Wits End With Algae

I had the BGA, I did a few things, so unfortunately I can't say which one did the trick.. I put a UV on (cheapy Jebo), Had lights off for 3 months, but wasn't blackout and near a window. Put some CO2 denner ferment kit in, Kept siphoning off the crap, didn't stop feeding my fish, but this...

Another Ebay Disaster Waiting To Happen

Of course we could all add it to our watched item list, so the seller thinks wow this is popular, only to be dissapointed when it doesn't sell... it's can't sell surely, it's hideous!

Bio Balls Cause High Nitrates Fact Or Fiction ?

I don't think anyone was suggesting inert objects can create anything, we all assume it is the bacteria that produces the nitrate thru interaction with the water column. So when people say Bio balls create nitrate, the assumption is the bacteria colonised on the bio balls produces the nitrate...

Bio Balls Cause High Nitrates Fact Or Fiction ?

Bio Balls Cause High Nitrates Fact Or Fiction ?

If your cycling tho (nitrite reading) there will be nitrate kicking about anyway.. but it is quite possible, alot of people don't like using bioballs as it seems to produce excess nitrate.., but then if there is nitrate in the water surely the LR should be able to remove it??.. well the...

    Crushed Coral Substrate

yeh, I agree with SkiFletch 15cm is kinda deep.. As for substrate I'd go for some crushed coral and coral sand mixed. Don't worry about live or dead it will seed soon enough from live rock. The different sizes in the sand I personally prefer the look of and I know my gobie finds it alot...

    Nitrate Filters

Thanks for the replies, some good stuff there, I never actually thought 20ppm was acceptable!, so it's good to know it shouldn't cause to many problems. I like the idea of the sulphur reactors with the carbonate media, so the nitrate is replaced by re-mineralised water a bit like a tiny calc...

    Additional Filter - Advice Please

They said hover cars would be a think of the future, and I'm picking mine up tomorrow  Never say never, perhaps there will be a way to minimise or even completely remove the need for water changes, take a pond for example, a perfectly healthy eco system, with only evaporation and rain...

    First Time Marine Tank

More flow, and personally I prefer the 'camera' look. If the flow has to go around a 90 degree bend it must lose a bit of umfph. without the cases it also has a wider stream effect which should be more beneficial for corals etc.

Looking good, I'd take the covers of the Seios (if that's what they are). Got a similar tank myself, keep us posted.

    Additional Filter - Advice Please

It's the heavy metals and other chemicals like chlorine and flourine?? that complicate things I guess. I'd say a filter that can re-generate the tank water completely with minimum change of water (so no need for the waste of RO etc.) would be the money maker! I'm thinking more along the lines...

Diy Nitrate Reactor Worth Going Commercial?

This is why I asked the question, debate away!! :good: I have never had success in keeping 0 nitrate, and I feel there are many of us who would like to eliminate the bulk of nitrate to bring it from 5ppm, to atleast unmeasurable with conventional kits, as per NSW. (please correct me if wrong)...

Diy Nitrate Reactor Worth Going Commercial?

I've been looking at nitrate reactors for sometime, I'm thinking the re-circ, dual chamber sulphur bead reactor seem to be the best. As nitrate from the tank is replaced with nitrate free, and re-buffered with trace elements and calcium from the carbonate media. But.. they seem to be very...

    Additional Filter - Advice Please

True, I don't think people shud avoid changing water, but reducing nitrate to 0 must have alot of good side effects as this is closer to NSW. And the nitrate reactor can use a natural method to extract trace elements from the carbonate media and put back in the tank producing a more natural...

    Additional Filter - Advice Please

I've been looking at nitrate filters and I think they are a great piece of kit, the only problem is cost.. As been said you could make one up out of pvc tube, or an old reactor. The trouble here is the efficiency of it, it needs to be a Fluidised bed reactor (circulation pump on it) to make it...

Courier Service For Sending Live Corals

Heat PAcks seem to be cheap enough here.. Your best bet maybe to register with a courier, as my courier would deliver anything from my address for £12 ish pounds maybe bit more next day, but if I'm asking them to collect from somewhere else then it ramps up to royalmail price of £20 quid...
