    Removing Medications

Recently I've had no choice but to medicate my main tank, at first with triple sulfa, and later on with broad spectrum medication containing Mafenide hcl, Aminacrine hcl, and Malachite Green. How can I remove these medications from the tank? I've heard activated carbon and of course water...

    Unknown Symptom In Fish Sickness.

Broad Spectrum medication. Active Constituents are Mafenide HCL, Amincrine HCL, and Malachite Green. Both Mafenide and Aminacrine should be effective against both gram postive and negitive. Malachite Green should be effective on gram-positive.

Thank you for asking wilder... Not much has changed since yesterday, their are still red and white stuff near the fins. He doesn't move around if he can avoid it, but he does move his fins. Broad spectrum medication said to treat bacterial, fungal, and parasitic desieses was added to both the...

The sick fish is already isolated, and was isolated before most of these symptoms showed up.

    I Can't Believe What Happened

Do you know the differences in parameters between the new water you used and the existing water. 90% water changes are a very bad idea unless you're very careful. I've only ever done them when the water being placed in the tank is from another preestablished tank with the same parameters. I...

    Definition Of Hollow Belly

Looking at it today.. it does look a little bit like that, but only on one side and not the other. The fish is still eating and swimming around and is other then this 100% acting and looking normal. Is it possible that this has been caused by him not getting food recently (I've resumed normal...

    Unknown Symptom In Fish Sickness.

Alright... It's a new day with new developments. The fish is still alive, and will eat infact... but only if food makes its way right near his mouth. His fins are being eaten away (this has happened with the other 2 fish that were sick, but they recovered from it), however something new is the...

    Unknown Symptom In Fish Sickness.

Yes, that has happened this and a different fish before... I have a hard time believing it was fish TB though... It says that happens only in advanced cases, and the other fish that showed curved spine managed to recover. What are the odds of recovery from advanced TB if that's what it was?

    Unknown Symptom In Fish Sickness.

Yes, as I have now replied in that thread, I think I should clarify a bit more on the situation. I have 2 current threads on this forum, one in the emergency section (this one), and one not. This one is for the cichlid you see in the picture above, with a severe illness. The other one is for a...

    Definition Of Hollow Belly

Yes, I'm aware of the problems with using an uncycled tank... Ammonia's and nitrite's are being kept within safe levels as best I can using some stuff I have that neutralises and detoxifys niterite and ammonia, along with water changes. The problem is, I just don't see a way to cycle that tank...

    Unknown Symptom In Fish Sickness.

I should probably add that there have been NO new fish, other fish tank water, or new fish tank contents (plants, rocks, etc) with the exception of water changes in the 2 years I have been looking after these fish... so complications that require the introduction of something new outside of...

    Unknown Symptom In Fish Sickness.

I've been treating my fish after an outbreak of some sort of bacterial deseise, treatment with melafix and triple sulfa has worked on all the fish so far, however there is one fish (cichlid) that is still sick from it. Aswell as the symptoms associated with the previous fish (swollen belly...

    Definition Of Hollow Belly

African Cichlid They are being fed something called "tetra colorbits", used it for a long time with no problems. The tank IS cycled, the emergency tank he was in was not. I'm honestly not sure, they are several years old, possibly 5 or more. The fish showing this depression in the skin was the...

    Definition Of Hollow Belly

I have 5 cichlids who I've been recently treating for bacterial infections... of the 4 fish that over different points in time became affected, 1 has made a full recovery (in the sense that all visible symtoms and unusual behavior have ended), 1 is in a sepperate hospitle tank and being treated...

Dead Spider Found In The Tank

I'm doing a 25% water addition... I can't do a 50% water change. The pH of the tap water and tank water is 2.5 pH different. A 50% change would cause a rapid fluctuation in the pH of the tank. The tank already had had the water removed for the 25% water change prior to the spider ending up in...

Dead Spider Found In The Tank

I have a tank of 5 cichlids and I just found a dead Huntsman spider in the tank at the bottom. It couldn't have been in there more then a couple days. I've never heard of this happening in anything I've read about fish... I need advice on what I should do, should I move the fish to a different...

    Very Very Sick Jewel Cichlid

Looking at the salt treatments, I have a serious problem. It says you should put the fish in non-contaminated water, I can't do that because there is no other tank setup. And our water's pH is so different to the tanks that barring actually testing it which I am not willing to do, I am positive...

    Very Very Sick Jewel Cichlid

I would have to check the size of the tank, I can't remember. I can try to issolate her but it will be difficult. I have no other tanks setup as I have no intention of getting more fish. Don't however take that to mean that I don't care about the ones I have left though. Since the pH is so...

    Very Very Sick Jewel Cichlid

I have a jewel cichlid who appears to be dying, and I'm not sure what to do. Niterate, niterite, and ammonia all check 0 The pH IS way too low, but it has been that low for years without any fish deaths (there are 5 in the tank). The symptoms are damaged possibly detached patchs of scales...

    Old tank syndrome

I am using yellow to green. It was my understanding that old tank syndrome does cause the pH to slowly drop around to 5.0-5.5. Which is the tank. Pritty much every other symptom matches aswell. EDIT: Oh, and yes, untreated water comes up as about 1.2. With prime it goes to around 0.4-0.6. It...

    Old tank syndrome

I am aware of that, I mean when pH reaches 7ish and the bacteria start reappearing. Prime must do something else, because it causes the ammonia to drop on an ammonia test. However for some reason after a day or so the ammonia starts appearing again (if it wasn't completly gone the first time)...

    Old tank syndrome

The kh of the tap water seems to be fine for the pH. I don't have ammo lock, but prime removes ammonia too probably in the same way, and I have used it for a while. After using it the ammonia tests report it lower, however I am a bit concerned that when I leave the water for a long time after...

    Old tank syndrome

I intended to tackle the ammonia problem first, with water changes. If I removed the ammonia from the water I put in, only the pH would be different, and I have tested bottled water's pH, and it's the same as the tap. What would be the difference? The pH of the tank isn't stable. My...

    Old tank syndrome

My last remaining tank has old tank syndrome. I have known it has problems for a while now, but only recently became sure that it was ots. The pH is 5.5 or lower (according to a wide range pH test) ammonia is 0.3 to 0.6 max. Nitrite is 0. Nitrate is very low I think, but I can't be sure...

    Breeding question

Thanks for the infomation, but I still don't see any direct responces to my question. "It is normal for jewel chichlids to become bigger prior to laying eggs, and how long does it normally take from the time they appear like this, and when they lay. I can't find this infomation anywhere yet"...

    Breeding question

Well, after last time, the female was very protective, chasing after anyone who got near the eggs, after which, they all resumed normal behavior, where they will attack eachother, but not very offen, and not very bad. I am not sure if it's relievent, but the pH in this tank is very low, 5-6ish...

    Breeding question

Actually, when I turn the light on, it was off when I looked just then, one of them looks very redish, the one I was worryed about, looks a bit redish but darker. Neither are close to the picture in color tho.

    Breeding question

Thats them, except not even close to that level of red. But they had eggs only a month ago, I know that for sure. If thats not them, they're a fish that has an extreamly similer body shape.

    Breeding question

We have a pair of Jewel Cichlids that I think are breeding, but I don't know their breeding cycle very well. Over a month ago the female got bigger and darker and atfirst we thought she may be sick, however there was also nest building, so we thought it might be breeding. About a week later, we...

    Impending pH crash?

The tanks well established, I would like to know whats wrong with simply doing lots of water changes with my tap water since it itself is a source of high pH water. These are all great suggestions, but I'm nervious about raising the pH too fast, especially when the fish are ok right now. I...
