the carbon will need replacing though as it is only useful for a few weeks, you don't have to have carbon in there the sponge is vital though as your good bacteria is in there only ever give it a gentle clean in tank water or as you say it will need cycling again.

no will not be on all the time only when the temp drops below what its set to difficult to gage how much that will be you could always watch it for an hour and calculate that x 24 if it has a light to indicate its on! not that I would!! haha

a bit of this in a bag in your filter will make your water cleaner than you have ever seen!! I have a 6ft tank full of bog wood and dropped a sachet of this in my filter and in 2 days it was so clear, its amazing stuff!! But that said tannins wont harm the fish...

Yep, Local fish shop get some bags for the fish to go in, they will show you how to tie the bags up if your not sure so you trap some air, keep the filters and substrate wet, I put the sand from my tank into rubble sacks to move it so you can also keep it wet and if you can save some tank water...

On the Tannins front my 6ft tank is full of wood and the Purigen I put in cleared the water literally over night, I used a half a small jar in a pair of tights not the little pouches, although I haven't put any back in since my last filter clean as I quite like the look of the tannins now.

I think the tops open to allow easier cleaning of the pipes, but as above not something I would spend money on unless I had it to burn so to speak. Ok would also allow water to be poured into the filter to save sucking, and there's a few diffuser options available for them.
