Purigen

Purigen on a fishless cycle, good or bad idea?

Considering that the beneficial bacteria needs ammonia, I would not use an ammonia scavenger while cycling. Sure, over time,,, the resins would become exhausted and then be less effective and allow the bacteria to colonize on the resins but it would in my view, prolong the maturing process unnecessarily.

I have got bogwood in at the moment which is leeching a bit of tannin but I will remove the purigen for now until I complete the cycle. thanks for the help.

I bought purigen for my tank with bog wood in it for the same reason, but to be honest it didn't really make much of a diffrence. I just uped the %of my water change every week and that makes much more diffrence. I cleaned mine as per instrucutions but was very doubful of it being bleach free so gave it a good few more soaks and rinses in treated water. But never returned it to the tank as had no confidence in it and it didnt do much for the tannis anyway

On the Tannins front my 6ft tank is full of wood and the Purigen I put in cleared the water literally over night, I used a half a small jar in a pair of tights not the little pouches, although I haven't put any back in since my last filter clean as I quite like the look of the tannins now.
