I am toying with the idea of using one of my three xp3 filters on my 90 gallon freshwater tank as a mechanical only filter. I was wondering what i should put in the baskets instead of the usual bio and chem media. Is this a good idea? and if so any suggestions on media and setup.

Thanks for the help. im gonna post a pic later on and get him identified properly. My only problem with the shelter is that the catfish is quite large and loves to destroy anytyhing i put in the tank regarding caves or shelters.

you might br right about the cory and sand. i always use gravel and mine do very well, but then again i love to buck conventional wisdom. lol i tend to do the opposite and it always works out great for me. i love the fish experts!!!

live sand is good to reduce cycle time and add good bacteria and such. I wouldnt recomend sand for the cory. they love gravel and its way easier to maintain

Dont overlook the rena xp3 and xp4! eheim is great but for value you cant beat rena! you can practically drink the water in my 90 gallon tanks and upkeep couldnt be easier. They are at least worth a serious look.

Lighten upon the guy. I keep koi un my 90 gal and you could drink the water its so clean. It is cruel to keep any fish in a tank and not in nature where they belong. As long as he keeps the koi healthy and it has room i say enjoy the fish while you are lucky enough to have him. Good luck :good:

You could try removing the wood and soaking it in a bucket changing the water untill no more tannens leech out. THe chemi pure cant really help with that
