I'm not sure about using certain types of lettuce, but I've been told you should rinse it, soak it in boiling water for about 10 seconds, then rinse in cold again. This kills any bacteria etc, and softens the leaf a bit too. Doesn't harm my fish - cucumber is a favorite with my fish, too.

Sorry to hear about your tank mis-hap, but I'm glad the fish survived! Juwel's and AquaOne are my recommendations - never had a problem with their tanks.. however if yours was one of them.. then I apologise. You may want to check into what caused the tank to crack in the first place, too...

A good varied diet (flakes, dried, frozen, live, and even cucumber and lettuce), regular water and filter maintenance and a nice habitat all help towards having healthy, happy fish! :thumbs: As for any of these "additives" that are around.. I'm not totally sure that these really work.. but...

Where's the enthusiasm? You're supposed to care and do research for your tank! :sad: Live plants help with controlling chemical balances and can also help reduce algae levels in the water, and are a good addition to any tank.

Personally, I have fast, bigger bubbles on one side of the tank, and finer bubbles on the other. What I also use, are air-valves.. little taps that you connect between your airstone and the air feed pipe.. you can then adjust the flow with a simple twist. See this page for a picture ;)
