my gf came home tonight will a small 20L tank tonight, she was wondering if there's a suitable sized cat to go in with a male betta ?

thanks in advance

Cats and fish tanks generally do not mix, they either don't stay in the bloody tank, or drown.

( sorry I had to say it -_- )

At first I thought of the Otocinclus Catfish, but it's recommended to be atleast 10 gallons. However, I've read on several sites that the Dwarf Corydoras catfish can be kept in as little as 5 gallons. However, they are a schooling fish, so I'm not sure how many you could get away with being in there (if any..).

I'd wait for more replies from people experienced with catfish

all you could do is a trio of pgymy cories, they aren't suitable for new tanks though, get them now and they'll die fairly quickly. so leave it 2/3 months and then add them, plenty of time to do some further research into them.

be warned though, siamese fighting fish are not called fighting fish for nothing. temprements vary from fish to fish but some of them can be extremley agressive and will not tolerate any tankmates at all, so it's a case of proceed with caution and be prepared to return the cories if the betta is very agressive with them.

also you haven't mentioend what experience/background fishkeeping you have, as you've posted in the new to the hobby forum i'll assume none, apologies if i'm telling you stuff you already know!!

You'll need to cycle the tank before getting the betta, have a read of the links in my sig 'whats cycling' and 'fishless cycling' if you're not sure what this is. Also reading through the link 'step by step guide to setting up an aquarium' is a good newbie guide which will give you loads of pointers. :good:

thanks for all the advice, i have keep fish before about ten year ago but messy divorce, new girl and baby took its toll to now, but back then i had no internet and basically filled a three foot tank shoved plants in left for a day and put a load of fish in !!! oh how wrong could i get it, luckilly i had a lot of sucess ( the mind boggles ) but that was down to luck.

the cat with a betta was just a idea, i worked the tank size out and how many litres and to be honest there is'nt a lot can go in, my girl wants something bright and pretty, hence the betta, me i like the old ugly one's lol no really cats are beautiful, i was toying with the idea of some cory's but again size wise its not a good idea, i like lots lol
thanks again
great site btw :good:

hee hee, well just wait for your girlfriend to be so impressed with fishkeeping from the betta that she lets you set up a nice big tank with plenty of room for big old beautiful catfish :hey: :D
