    Corys Flicking And Darting

Hmmm    I am on day 4 of a 5 day treatment with Myxazin and it doesn't seem to be having any affect.   The latest rainbow to catch it is getting much worse.     Any ideas what to do next? I am thinking a fungus treatment   Aaron

    Corys Flicking And Darting

Thanks for the feedback Sophie.   I will get hold of those two products and give them a whirl.   I am starting to think Melafix is not at all up to the job here.   Aaron :)

    Corys Flicking And Darting

Any ideas guys? Looks like this has spread to another Rainbow now.   Desperate to nip it in the bud with an appropriate treatment.  Real shame you can't buy Maracyn in the UK   Today is the last day for the Melafix 7 day dose, so will be doing a big water change   Thanks

    Corys Flicking And Darting

Hey! Not managed to get a picture of the Corys yet   However I have spotted something similar on one of the Rainbows today :(     Should I complete the melafix (another 3 doses) or stick some carbon in and try something else   Aaron

    Corys Flicking And Darting

The white patch is not on their mouth and they don't seem to have any issues feeding at all.   I feed them a very varied diet, flakes, bloodworm, algae wafers, daphnia, and occasionally blanched cucumber.   Can anyone recommend an Antibiotic that I can get over the counter in the UK without...

    Corys Flicking And Darting

Hi All   Just an update.   2 of the corys now seem to have a bacterial or fungal infection on their faces.  Hard to tell which, so far I have tried Pimafix, Melafix and Esha 200.   Currently half way through the course of Melafix and it does seem to be reducing.  I will try and get pictures, but...

    Homebase Now Do Ammonia Again

Hey All   Just thought I would share this as I had a right nightmare getting hold of Ammonia (without resorting to online ordering)   I noticed that my local Homebase had household ammonia in stock.  It was not as cheap as it used to be, it was about £2.60, but sill beats ordering online and...

    Corys Flicking And Darting

Hi All!   I am having some issues with a few of my panda corys (I have 7)   They seem to be occasionally flicking against the substrate and darting around.   I can not see any other obvious issues with them, I have checked for white spots, velvet etc.  Externally they are fine as far I can tell...

    New Rio 125 Planted Journal

JOURNAL POST   Just a quick update...   Cycling is going well now I think.   We have no ammonia and 2ppm Nitrite.  Will keep checking every now and again.   Do you think I should add ammonia to keep the bacteria going, or will the ammonia from the plants (they are newly planted, so still some...

    Black Sand Suitable For Cory's

I decided not to risk it - and went with normal round sand.     There were just too many conflicting reports for all dark sands :(   Wasn't prepared to risk the barbels for colour.

    New Rio 125 Planted Journal

JOURNAL POST   Having some real issues with the Koralia Nano, it moves the water no doubt, but it is very noisy and visibly shakes.   I have tried taking apart, cleaning, and reseating the impeller, which works for a time, but not long.   I have contacted Hydor to see what they can do.   Plants...

Strange Ammonia Reading In Newly Set Up Planted Tank

Hi All   Thanks for the replies   Sorry for the slow reply to some of your questions.   The subsrate is the Tropica Plant Nutrition Substrate (http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/tropica-plant-growth-substrate-25l-p-6292.html), capped with sand and gravel.   I am dosing with - NPK via EI dosing...

    New Rio 125 Planted Journal

Thanks Aquamaniac   Having a fun time at the moment trying to get the CO2 right, well actually a bit higher than normal   As there are no fish I am going to get the CO2 level a little higher to try and keep the algae at bay.   I have also opted for a rather odd, 1 hour on, 1 hour off photoperiod...

Strange Ammonia Reading In Newly Set Up Planted Tank

Hey TTA Thanks for the in depth reply :)   The substrate is tropica plant nutrition topped with new sand and gravel   All decor is new and has not been used before.   I will try your suggestion about the bucket of water.  Afraid I don't have an air pump just yet so will leave it over night for...

Strange Ammonia Reading In Newly Set Up Planted Tank

Strange Ammonia Reading In Newly Set Up Planted Tank

Will have to keep an eye on it.   Not the end of the world really as I letting the tank bed in for a few weeks before I add any fish.   And when I do add fish I will be adding 3 mature filter sponges   Just confused me :)

    New Rio 125 Planted Journal

JOURNAL POST   Time for some updates as the tank is now set up   So this weekend we were finally able to set up the tank    Here is the stand in situ.     Now the full tank shot     This is the Tropica Plant Nutrition going in (it really does cloud the water)     Spent forever moving bog...

Strange Ammonia Reading In Newly Set Up Planted Tank

Yeah I was surprised at that too.  I have run the test 3 times, no noticable nitrate reading.    I was thinking substrate, but a quick google suggests it is totally inert.   It is Tropica plant nutrition topped with sand in parts, and gravel in others.

Strange Ammonia Reading In Newly Set Up Planted Tank

Hey All   I set up my new Rio125 this weekend.   I tested the water today, more out of boredom than anything else as I am not adding fish for a few weeks yet.   I got some strange results.     Ammonia was 2ppm (zero out of the tap) Nitrate was about 20 (zero out of the tap) Nitrite was somewhere...

    To Fishless Cycle Or Not?

Hey Slim   I have read that many times.   I think the approach I will probably take is;   - Plant tank fully, crank up CO2 - Let plants settle in and grow for 2-3 weeks. - After 2-3 weeks add 4 or 5 fish and the mature filter.  Monitor water. - Wait a week or 2 - add more fish, monitor water. -...

    To Fishless Cycle Or Not?

Hey Lock Man :)   I do have some media maturing in another tank at the moment and I will certainly be adding it   Although that in itself raise a question...   Do you add it on day1 when setting up planting the tank (potential lack of food source given there are no fish) Or do you add on the day...

    To Fishless Cycle Or Not?

I think the point of the 'silent' cylce is that the huge plant mass is more than capable of handling the fish waste, even in the absence of a biological filter.   And as plants are more efficient at processing the waste, they get first dibs.   I am just very keen to avoid adding ammonia, as it...

    To Fishless Cycle Or Not?

Hey All   I was going to approach my new tank with the same approach I have always used... a fishless cycle and then stick most of the bioload in the tank in one hit.   Now, as I wait until I can set up my new tank I have been reading lots and lots online (sometimes a mistake I think) and there...

    Flow/turnover Question

Thanks for the replies   This has helped.  I will go for the 1600lph - I think one thing I need to consider is advertised flow rate vs actual flow rate of the Juwel powerhead. Once the media etc has been factored in then I suspect it is actually not anywhere near 600lph, so makes sense to have...

    Flow/turnover Question

Hey All I am in the process of collecting together all of the kit for my new Juwel Rio 125   I have a quick question about flow and tank turnover.   The tank comes with the 600lph Juwel pump (which can via an impellor swap be upgraded to 1000lph)   I am going to add a Koralia circulation pump...

I love the look of it.  Been looking at that Unipac stuff.  They colour the black stuff which is putting me off a little bit.   I really like the way that the black sand brings out the colours of the fish though.   I really want something keeps my planned Panda Cory very happy   Aaron :)
