How Are Shrimp With Moving Water ?

I have some amanos in my main tank which I find fascinating to watch. I was wondering if there is a smaller shrimp that would be happy in a tank with a fair amount of water movement? Or do shrimp really dislike water movement ? The tank is planted and is pretty mature now having been running...

    Looking For Fish Suggestions

Hi folks, Been a while since I posted here but I'm looking to stock up my 20 US gallon tank. The tank is planted but has quite a strong water flow so the fish must not mind moving water. There are lot so nooks and crannies for them to take shelter when they need a rest tho. Current stock is...

    Bristlenose Plec And Shrimp....

I've had 2 large BNs in the same tank as 5 amano shrimp and a ghost shrimp for the last year. The ghost shrimp passed away recently but the only conflict between the amanos and BNs is when the shrimp steal the algae wafers...

Not Fungus, Not Ick..what Is It?

Looks like columnaris to me. Especially with the fading of colour around the infected area. I'd definitley go with something a bit stronger than melafix. Myxazin is a good suggestion, just be sure not to overdose. It's very easy to overdose in smaller tanks.

    Water Changes

Regular water changes should sort it out. No reason you can't do 25% per day until the problem is solved. As long as it doesn't stress your Betta. It could indeed be a bloom of algae or bacteria, water changes will sort that out too by removing the excess nutrients they thrive on.

    Pygmy Cory Substrate

I have my pygmies in a tank with sand over a plant substrate. It depends which plants you want to grow I suppose... I don't have any carpeting as the smaller carpet plants won't reach the nutrients as it's 2-3cm deeper. Stem plants and larger plants are fine. My pygmies do indeed spend a lot...

    Bettas And Shrimp...

Bit late to answer, sorry. Just thought I'd add a note of caution. One of my boys lived happily with 5 Amano shrimp (about 2 inches long) for nearly a year. Then one day he killed one and ate him. Then another... and another...(in one night) I had to rescue the last 2 when I discovered him...

    Look What I Got !

Rocket, my last betta died a few months ago. I've shown photos of him on here before and had a few kept online in my personal photo album. Anyway, a friend of mine in the USA decided to send me a gift for my birthday which arrived this morning... you can bet I was pleasantly surprised ! She...

I Have A New Betta. Is It Normal For Him To Sit On The Bottom?

Is there a strong water flow from your filter ? Bettas don't like too much water movement, he may be sitting out of the flow. It could also be that he just doesn't like the other fish. Bettas are not social fish at the best of times. Gouramis are also anabantoids and some hostility is likely...

Just Got A Red Crowntail Betta

The Betta is probably terrified it's going to be eaten. Those other fish are really not suitable as tank mates for the Betta, they're called fighting fish but all the other tank mates you have listed are much larger than him and likely to kill him. It may be that he's just learning his place...

    Male And Females Divided?

You could always grow some plants along the dividers so that at worst they will only catch fleeting glimpses of each other. Kewskill's suggestion is also a good one, sanding the dividers to make them 'frosted' is also an option. I'm not sure what size each of the compartments is, but if the...

    Concerned...

It's not uncommon to see Bettas at the surface of the tank, they can breathe atmospheric air. It's also not uncommon for them to be flighty when introduced to a new tank. It's a stressful time for the fish being ripped out of a familiar environment and added to a new one with not so much as a...

    Is Tap Water Ok

If you use a good dechlorinator then your tap water is fine. Even more so if that is what the fish are used to. Don't just go changing for the sake of it, the biggest thing the fish like is stability.

    Female Better With Molly Fry?

It doesn't have to fit the Bettas mouth for the Betta to kill it. It may be that she is just curious, but Mollies are brightly coloured fish, she may see them as possible threats to her territory. You can see the size of the fry, and the size of the Betta, if she can catch them, she may eat...

    Betta's + Plants

Bettas produce CO2 just like any other fish, they just have the ability to take in atmospheric oxygen to supplement what they get in the water. Do you fertilise the water column for the plants ? Is there a plant substrate for them to get food from ? Generally speaking if you don't have a...

How Do You Take Good Photos?

The things I do to take fish pics... 1/ Have patience and take 50 for each good one :) 2/ Make sure there are no other lights to cause reflections. 3/ Don't use the flash on a compact camera. The reflections in the glass/water interface will spoil 99% of your shots. The flash will also...

    Naughty Step For Bettas ?

    Types Of Shrimp?

Is the tank heavily planted ? The shrimp are going to need lots of hidey holes and they love to graze on the micro fauna around plants. I'd think half a dozen small shrimp should be no problem, I'm not familiar with hawaian reds so can't comment about the specific breed. As long as you stay...

    Types Of Shrimp?

Generally shrimp are regarded as being low/no bio load since they clean up leftovers and don't produce a lot of waste. Whether to count them or not depends how many you plan to add :) You could try looking at petshrimp.com, they have a fairly good list of the various freshwater species you...

Do You Think Some Corys Could Be Added ?

I have some dwarf corys in my tanks and my dad has fallen in love with them. He has a 4ft (300 ltr) community tank with Pearl Gouramis, Cardinal and Rummynose Tetras, 2 BN plecs (one is 6" the other just under 3") and a Rubbernose plec (probably a little under 3") with a few platies (home...

    Methayleneblue

I agree with what you say there Maxsmom, but even if you change 100% of the water, at worst you will lose *some* bacteria to die off. The fish remaining in the tank will still be producing waste so there will never be 0. I wouldn't advise large changes every day, but 25% is not too large in my...

    Methayleneblue

Are you sure it's the water and it hasn't stained the tank ? If you've done a water change I don't see how the water can still be coloured. As for too many water changes I don't believe there is any such thing, as long as the replacement water is dechlorinated in advance so the paramaters stay...

    Acclimating Fish That Are Shipped

Makes sense to me. I personally don't believe there is much benefit in mixing aquarium water with bag water while the fish is still in there. I always leave the lights out for at least a few hours after introducing new fish to a community so new faces don't get harrassed. Hadn't thought...

    Power Heads

I wouldn't reccomend it. Bettas are happiest in still / very slow moving water in my experience. Any kind of strong flow makes swimming around a lot fo work with all that finnage. When adding a filter there are other benefits to consider than simple water movement so you have to weigh the...

    Bettas And Shrimp.

I'm guessing you plan other inhabitants in a tank that size... As for the Bamboo/Betta combination I really don't know.
