    Can Anyone I.d. This?

That's a striped raphael catfish. They can get to 8.5 inches long, and they aren't aggressive but they will eat anything that can fit into their mouths. I've heard that they like to be in schools of at least four, but all the care pages I'm looking up right now say they're fine by themselves...

My Angels, Pleco And Betta . . . Dead!

It seems very unlikely that slightly elevated nitrite and nitrate levels would have caused ALL of his fish to die unless they were all super super sensitive fish. And bettas are HARD to kill with bad water quality. If a betta can live for a week in a pint cup at a pet store being overfed and...

    Bottom Dweller Wanted

I disagree about that. 24 gallons for a shoal of corys seems perfectly acceptable to me. They're two inch fish, they've got plently of room to move in that tank. I'd feel perfectly comfortable putting more than one shoal in a tank that size. I've got a shoal in my 10 gal right now (they'll be...

    New Tank Seeded Filter

In my experience, my seeded tanks tend to completely cycle in like two weeks. Could be different for you though. I am actually able to stick the filter cartridges inside the mature filter, so my tanks are REALLY seeded. But yeah. Two weeks is pretty standard for me.

    Oh Goody...

The impeller cleaning thing sounds good. In my experience, most HOBs let you pull the impeller right out and mess with it, and thats exactly what I do whenever they fail. Also, this sounds weird, but I've had extraordinary luck with emptying the filter of water, plugging it in, and whacking it...

    Best Decision I Ever Made...

Best: Special ordering a long, wide, low 70 gallon tank just for corydoras :yahoo: Worst: Knowing nothing about fishes, buying four corys of different species for an uncycled 10 gal. Only 1 survived. :-( But he's enormous, fat, and healthy now :)

Will My Fighter Survive In A Goldfish Bowl?

Just looking at your sig, whats currently in your 10 gal? Thats an appropriate size for a betta if there isn't anything too aggressive or edible in there. Though I guess you've probably thought of that. Bettas are hardy fish. You can put him in a bucket or a bowl or anything for now as long...

Things I'd Like To Change About Fishkeeping...

True. My LFS (the good one), has three common plecs in a 200 gallon tank in the front. One of them looks to be about 2 ft, and the other two are about a foot and a half. So it can happen, and it appears to be doing so with three different fish which suggests that its not just chance, its...

    So My Tanks Ready!

I've also heard that bettas get stressed in tanks of over 10 gallons because they feel the need to patrol the entire area. I would recommend getting a separate 5 gal for your betta if you want to keep him. Bettas are fun, they stay small, have beautiful finnage, and are very hardy. I love em...

Things I'd Like To Change About Fishkeeping...

Other fish get bigger, yes, and someone with knowledge and a reasonably sized tank and house one, true, but common plecs are often sold to little kids or inexperienced beginners who just want a "sucky fish" for their 10 gallon tank, and who have no idea how big that little "sucky fish" is gonna...

Really Weird Free Floating Algae Problem

So I've been running my tanks for a while now, and both my 10 gallon and by 5.5 gallon have had these weird free floating algae blooms that make the entire water green so you can't see further than a few cenimeters into the tank. My 10 gallon developed it a couple of months ago, and it went...

Things I'd Like To Change About Fishkeeping...

Well, if people buy fewer fish, but fewer fish are subject to maltreatment and bad conditions, I don't really see the bad there. I maintain that if you aren't willing to invest the money to buy a proper goldfish tank, then you aren't ready to take care of what could eventually be an enormous...

    I Am Peeved!

So, my friend and I have been going to one of the local pet stores for a while. Since actually learning about fish, we've noticed they don't take stellar care of their stock, so we never buy fish from them, although we still go in and look at their fishes from time to time. We went in there a...

    Why Did My Betta Die?

Well, this is an extremely nice fish store. They order thier bettas from nice, reputable breeders and the tanks are always clean. This is the only pet store I've ever been to where you go tell them that one of their bettas looks distressed and they go "oh no!" and run to the betta display...

    Why Did My Betta Die?

His scales were not sticking out. I've seen dropsy before and this didn't look like it. His spine wasn't bent awkwardly, and I'm not sure about the white cottony patches but he did seem to decompose AWFULLY quickly. He couldn't have been dead more than three hours when I found him and he was...

    Why Did My Betta Die?

A few months ago I bought a white double tail betta at a very nice, healthy fish store. I set him up in a 5.5 gallon with a filter (current diffused) and lots of plants. He seemed well enough, until recently when I added three small corydoras to his tank (temporary, the 40 gal wasn't quite...

    Help! My Eel Is Dying!

This is Seascapes in Mountain View. They're not a chain. I've heard about the dangers of Tubifex, but they're the only live food I can get in my area, and I figured those from the awesome pet store would be less likely to carry disease.

Live, from a very very good LFS. I figured he wasn't going to make it and there wasn't much I could do, so I put him in as comfortable a tank as possible and waited for him to pass, but he didn't for a good 10 hours so I figured there might be some saving him. I don't have my hopes up though...

Would My Fish Tank Be Appropriate For Corys?

Sounds ok to me once its cycled. The idea with the gravel is that corys, while rooting around on the ground as they spend most of their time doing, could wear down or cut their delicate barbels. Corys find food with their barbels, so they're pretty important. However, there is some...

    Grieving Corys

How do you know they don't grieve? For all we know corys could be doing calculus in their heads. We really know nothing about the emotions or states of mind of fish. I believe they can grieve, I know a horse who stopped eating when his pasture buddy died. I believe any animal that bonds can...

    How Fast Do Lungfish Grow?

Well, I've been doing my research, and there are about 6 different species of african lungfish. Some get enormous, and some just get relatively large. How Fast Do Lungfish Grow?

There's an african lungfish at my LFS right now, and I'm very interested in buying him. Right how he's the perfect size for my 30 gallon wide tank, but the question is how fast will he outgrow it and what size tank will I have to move him in? I'm fairly certain that in a few years I will be...

Would A Newt Eat Guppy Fry?

If you're getting firebellys they do best with 1/3 land to 2/3 water, and the water should be fairly well planted. They don't like water current so be careful not to get a filter with too strong a current. Good luck!

Is it true that there's two kinds? I remember reading somewhere that the black aeneus had no patterns in their black and brown fins while the venezuelan blacks had patterns and were all black. My fish (I think his name is Dracula) has little patterns in his black if you look closely, and his...

Oh Dear It Is Raining Cories In California

I'm new to this discussion, but I personally see nothing wrong with long-finned cories, as long as the cories aren't being hurt. Ok, So I've Got A 40 Gallon Tank

Hi, I recently got a used forty gal nearly free from my local pet store. Its pretty short and wide, and I'm wondering if it'll be big enough to house a few spotted raphael catfish, which I would really really enjoy. I've read they need to be in groups of at least three, so I'm hoping I could...
