There's an african lungfish at my LFS right now, and I'm very interested in buying him. Right how he's the perfect size for my 30 gallon wide tank, but the question is how fast will he outgrow it and what size tank will I have to move him in? I'm fairly certain that in a few years I will be able to provide him with an enormous tank or indoor pond, but I just need to know how quickly he'll need that.

i dont know much about them so dont quote me on this but big fish usually grow quickly, what size is it now?if it is the perfect size for your 30g now im guessing it will outgrow it in no time at all.you also have to be careful not to stunt it in a small tank :good:

Im sure that there was an article in PFK a month or 2 back, where the guy had a lung fish that was HUGE, cant find the magazine just now but, he had turned his basement into 2 tanks one for the Lungfish (lungy) and the other for his smaller fish like Rays, Arrowanas etc.

I would not suggest you purchase one unless you have a seriously large tank (think 500 Gall + )

Well, I've been doing my research, and there are about 6 different species of african lungfish. Some get enormous, and some just get relatively large. I don't know which species this guy is, but the LFS (this is a really good and knowledgeable one) has the guy who knows in today, so I'm going in to find out.

I got me a 30+ inches Protopterus Annectens in a 100 gallon tank with sump. I've never seen him have a growth spurt so they grow relatively slow. I've had him since about 20+ inches back a dozen years. Even though they aren't "swimmers" they will dart about and bash in to the glass (HARD!!! ). If I had him in a glass tank I doubt I'd still have them two today. I know he'll grow a wee bit more.
