    Sick Oranda

Sorry for the late reply-- I was out of town for a few days. I don't think the bulge is getting bigger, though there's a white fluffy thing on the tip. Is this possibly a fungus? I'll see what I can do about the extra/bigger filter.

    Sick Oranda

I have a Whisper Power Filter for tanks up to 30 gallons. I change about 10 - 20% of the water every week.

I have Maracyn-Two; will this be ok to use or is there a better medication?

    Sick Oranda

I can't remember when I set up the tank. I want to say maybe at the beginning of 2007. Sorry, I don't have a test kit for nitrate. The bulge is soft. I don't have a camera. I will try to find a way to borrow one.

    Sick Oranda

Hello, I have a 20 gallon tank (20g long) with an oranda and fantail. I would say that both fish are about 3 inches / 7.6 centimeters long. This morning I noticed that the oranda has a bulge on her body, right behind the gills. I am very worried! Does anyone know what this could be? She seems...

    10 Gallon Tanks With Goldfish

I heard that sand can erode gills over time, too. I think goldfish do best in pairs or groups--my two goldfish seem to be very happy together; they are always swimming with each other, and Milkshake, who gets scared at the slightest movement or noise, always seems to take a great comfort in...

    Goldfish Help

eh, i wouldn't really recommend lettuce straight from the fridge. it's probably too tough for the fish to eat. if you blanch the lettuce for a minute or two, it'll be nice and soft-- they'll eat it up in no time. :)

    Question About Goldfish

you will most likely not see your goldfish grow significantly in one month's time. i would keep the goldfish in the 30 gallon tank and move your other fish into the 29 gallon tank-- this way the goldfish will not have to be stressed because of a move (besides, there is only a one gallon...

    Urgent Advice Needed

all plants produce oxygen. typically when they are very healthy, they will pearl which is when you can see the actual oxygen bubbles escape the leaves and float to the top of the tank. i don't see any nutrient-rich substrate in your tank nor do i see sufficient lighting. your plant needs these...

    Fish For Planted Tank?

i have platties in my planted tank. they nibble on the algae at times, but in terms of a main algae-eating source they are not effective. i think most fish will nibble algae. the only specific recommendations i can give are siamese algae-eaters and chinese algae-eaters. :)

Feeding Live Or Frozen In Coldwater Tanks

hello lisalisa, i feed my goldfish sinking pellets twice every day. i feed frozen brine shrimp once or twice a month, dried gammaru shrimp occassionally, blanched romaine lettuce once every 1-2 weeks, and boiled unshelled peas at least once a week. i have fed my goldfish daphnia a few times...

My Tank Is A Nightmare! Neons Swimming Vertically?

it could be that his fin only got nipped by another fish. this happens with my platties from time to time (but not as much as it used to happen, thank goodness). it's nothing to worry about; the fin will probably grow back in no time! :)

    Back In Business,

hello digitalairman, anubias (especially anubias nana) are great plants for small tanks, although you may want to stick to the more weed-like fast-growing plants for a while to avoid algae. :) hairgrass and a few other small-leaf carpeting plants are often used for small tanks, but it depends...

    Top 5 Fish !?!

ah, i guess i'll be the only one to say i am a sucker for goldfish! every time i see them at the store i start imagining huge tanks and ponds full of them. :) my favorite goldfish varieties are oranda and fantail. other than goldfish, i like plecos, although i've never had much of a chance to...

    Switching To Planted Substrate Change?

hello gsta13, that's how i changed the substrate in my tank-- i put all my fish into a bucket with the tank water and switched substrate. it's a good idea to put the plants into the substrate before you refill the tank. you can check out the plants and planted tanks section for more tips. :)...

    Lots Of Advice Sought!

hello wanda, dwarfgourami covered most everything, so i'll just add a few things in. :) 5) puffers are generally not community fish. they are territorial and will attack their own species and other fish in the aquarium. it's best if you return them quickly. 6) what species of plants do you...

    Nasty Male Guppy

hello sharibel, mollies and guppies shouldn't be together as mollies like brackish water. you should either return the molly or put her into her own tank with proper conditions. good luck. :)

    50 Litre Tank

hello sozza, a fantail will outgrow a thirteen gallon tank. going by the one-inch of fish per gallon rule, you are already overstocked with the eight zebra danios. i'm not sure if having black widow tetras and zebra danios together is a good idea anyway; the tetras might fall victim to the...

    20 Gallon Tank

hello fish-r-fancy, it really depends on what your preferences are. :) i, personally, would have a tropical tank with gouramis, danios, and shrimp, or a species-only tank for some platties. what type of fish do you like? what type of tank are you going for? as for the water parameter...

Am New To This, Can Anyone Help ?

cycling deals with developing the bacteria that will process your fish's waste. fish waste has ammonia in it; this is a very harmful chemical. there are bacteria that will eat this ammonia and turn it into nitrite, which is also a toxic chemical, but less harmful than ammonia. there is another...

Am New To This, Can Anyone Help ?

hello nrritchieoct02, six males and one female is not a good ratio. the males will likely harrass the female and might even start fighting other males. typically, you want to have more females than males. however, your tank does not seem like it has been cycled, so it'd probably be best not to...

    Newbie Requires Help :-(

hello jstephens, i think your tank might be around 30 USG, although it's hard to tell without that third dimension. that being said, it will be hard to determine how many fish you can have in your tank without knowing the number of gallons your tank will hold. it's best to clean the tank once...

    Another Stocking Question

hello dogfish, i think it'd be best to fill out your rasbora schools a bit more. about four more harlequin's and two more hengeli's will do. after that, you could probably squeeze in a small school of up to eight (at least four) of the smaller species of corys, like the pygmy cory. by then...

    Planted Tank Setup?

hello fishtk75, try reading some of the pinned topics in the plants and planted tanks section of the forum. :) generally, you need sufficient lighting, a good substrate, co2 (which is really optional, but it's always best to have) and usually some type of fertilizer to run a planted tank. you...

    Lots Of Bubbles! Need Help!

    Plant Suggestions

well, i'm planning to keep the temperature around 68-degrees F / 20-degrees C, but the temperature in my other tank tends to be in the low 70s F / 20s C. i'm pretty sure a lot of plants can grow in these temperatures, even though the growth may be a bit slower (right?). all the plants i listed...

    Fish Or Fishes

i use "fish" for both singular and plural cases and i'm american. :) but i think "fishes," "fishies," and "fishy" are all just playful forms because they're more fun/creative than using "fish" all the time. as for your last statement, i think this is more suited for "tropical chit chat" or...
