Hi all,

I am new here... well actually have been reading for a while, but first post!!!

I have a 50L tank (approx. 13 US Gallons I think), with an internal power filter, and no heater yet just sticking with coldwater fish for now, which I have cycled with 4 Zebra Danios. My ammonia levels are now staying down and pH is steady, so I have bought 4 more Zebra Danios for a total of 8 so there is more of a school.

I am looking at getting probably a few Black Widow Tetras and a couple of Fantails for some colour. My questions are, firstly will these fish be ok together? And how many should I get?
I realise the tetras are a schooly fish so plan to get at least 4 or them and maybe a couple of fantails...?

Or are there any other fish you can suggest that would work well in my aquarium?

Any help would be much appreciated!!!

hello sozza,

a fantail will outgrow a thirteen gallon tank. going by the one-inch of fish per gallon rule, you are already overstocked with the eight zebra danios. i'm not sure if having black widow tetras and zebra danios together is a good idea anyway; the tetras might fall victim to the danios nipping their fins.

good luck.

Hi there!
As mentioned the inch to gallon rule is a good basic guideline but usually some bigger fish require more room (eg a 12" fish would NOT be ok in a 12G tank) Anyway, your tank definitely sounds full and I would hold off on adding fish until you get a biggter tank. Also, zebra danios are fairly hardy but not all species are so make sure you add fish slowly (1-2 every week) so you don't overload your biological filter

Good luck and let us know how the fish are doing! :D
