Hey! I know you are supposed to have 10 gallons for every goldfish an I understand why. I bought two calico fantails thinking they would grow into the 30 gallon tank and well they have no grown at all and I was wondering if they are stunted if it would be okay to keep them both in a 10 gallon? I have been watching the water and they just got a water change 2 days ago and it looked good. If you could please let me know!

Thanks!

Usually you start off at 20gal for the first goldfish, then 10gal for every other one added.
I wouldn't put one in a 10gal never mind two, not much room for them to move, and they need excellent filters, massive waste producers.

Keep them in the 30 gal, the tank size is perfect and they'll grow, it just may take a while. How long have you had them?

If you were to put them both in a 10, they'd probably die of ammonia poisoning long before they'd become growth stunted, so please, leave them in the 30; it is just the right size. Goldfish can take a while to grow; you must realize this is a species with a potential lifespan of 15-20+ years depending on the type. Most are not sexually mature until 3 years of age, and continue to grow throughout their life. My commons, which are a notoriously fast growing variety, took three years to hit the 9" mark - and that's in a 75g aquarium (before anyone bites my head off, they will of course move to a pond as they grow).

I have had them for about a month or so now and they havent seem to grown at all. They were in a 10 gallon at the pet store with about 5 of them thats why i think they are stunted and that is why i was wondering if it is okay until i find homes for my guppies in my 30 gallon if it would be okay to keep them in the 10 gallon until? I have about 20 baby guppies and 2 male grown guppies, 1 black skirt tetra, and 1 neon tetra to find a tank for. I just got an e-mail today from a man on criagslist saying he would like to trade my 10 gallon for a 29 gallon so i think i am going to take the offer and then go ahead and move the goldfish into the new 29 gallon.

Thanks!

you will most likely not see your goldfish grow significantly in one month's time. i would keep the goldfish in the 30 gallon tank and move your other fish into the 29 gallon tank-- this way the goldfish will not have to be stressed because of a move (besides, there is only a one gallon difference, so why bother to move them anyway?).

goldfish need lots of room for a number of reasons. follow everyones advice and keep them in the 30 gal.
