I used Bio-spira on 2 tanks with fish and they were fully cycled in 3 days (0, 0, 0 on one tank and 0, 0, 20 on the other). I don't know if this product is similar or not but fishless cycles are not the ONLY way to go (of course bio is not available in the UK so maybe it is for you :P )

I did that recently with no problems. Fed normally Friday morning and fed normally Monday night. Of course they were ready to jump out when I lifted the lid Monday night :D :D :D

Could you be feeding them too much? When I feed (about 2 flakes per fish once a day) the food rarely hits the bottom let alone get near the filter intake.

No probs...some times it is hard to tell "tone of voice" on a board. He has been in that tank since December and seems pretty content now that all the other pesky fish are gone and the levels are good. At one point it 8ppm Amonia :sick: but now it is perfect. I know it's not the ideal situation...

LOL...That's why I did not really say yes or no...I have had several surprises with fish in the last 6 months (not all of them good) so you never really know even though some things make more sense then others.

I don't know if this is usual behavior or not but I have some Golden White Clouds that are always at the top of the tank (usually chasing the Harlequin around :hey: ) The Platies and Cherry barbs tend to stay near the bottom so maybe it's just a territory thing.

If you can get the level down to almost 0 and add the Bio-spira with the last change it would normally take hold in 2 to 3 days but with that many fish...ouch...don't know how long until you overwhelm the tank again. Got room for another tank? :/

IMO...Well if you go by adult size (not your current size) and use the fish inches rule of 1 inch per gallon you have 37 inches in a 29 gallon tank with the fish you currently have (based on 3 inches for the barbs, 4 for the gouramis and 5 for the shark) so I don't know how wise it would be to...

I have 2 black phantom tetras that seem otherwise healthy but they frequently swim on their side. Mostly they do this when the light is off. Has any one seen this behavior before? all my tank numbers are good and when the lights are on they swim normally.

I think you need to know the height and depth as well as the length to answer that question. Once you have that you can figure the gallons and go from there. In reality it all really comes down to how big the fish will be when fully grown.

My LFS guys suggested that if you are not looking at the fish leave the light off because the phosphates that are added to tap water combined with the light will spur algae growth.

When reading the direction for the Ammonia tube kit it says to shake the tube with the cap on instead of using your finger to cover the tube since that can mess it up. Guess it is very sensitive. Good thing we don't have to wear latex gloves and masks :lol: :lol:

Bio-spira is not available outside of US (I emailed them yesterday) but it did cycle my tank (30 gallons) in less then 3 days with fish. It is kept cold to keep the bacteria inactive.

I originally bought strips ( a 5 in 1 test) and then realized that it did not test for Ammonia DAH!!! So I went back and got a liquid Ammonia tester and it is great. Once I use up all of my strips (which will be soon with testing 2 tanks) I will get a liquid Nitrate/Nitrite/PH tester.

I will have to check when I get home. When they take the fish out the person writes a number on the bag and then someone else reads the number off the bag and enters it into the computer so it's possible they mixed up a number.

It is kept in a fridge at the stores and if shipped it is shipped with icepacks. I don't know if they will die if they are warm but they become active once warmed up. Kepping them cold makes them inactive. There is a shelf life to them even if kept cold.

They are both Siamese. One is a Seal point (typical Siamese that you see) and the other is a Cream point (much lighter face, paws and tail). The father is Seal and the mother is tort (like Tortoise shell). Their names are Espresso and Cream (guess which one is which :P )
