Im in the US and they are double ended. I'm not a fan of the double ended bulbs, but it is what it is

    New Mh Bulbs

Good afternoon, It is that time to replace my 150w MH bulbs. There are a lot on the market and was wondering what everyone was using. My aquarium is as follows. 75 gallon mixed (mostly soft and lps) 30 gallon sump Secondly, I wanted to share with everyone something that occured with my tank...

Dsb/plenum/bare Bottom For Already Established Aquarium

You know, I thought that too when I bought the bulbs. At first they were very yellow but then they moved towards a whiter spectrum. I'm thinking of moving to the XM's. What are your thoughts on them. I had thought about the remote sand bed. However, and this is a leading decision maker for all...

Dsb/plenum/bare Bottom For Already Established Aquarium

Not a problem Seffie. I'm looking to expand my current tank to a complete mixed reef. Currently I have relatively few corals. Mostly soft corals, and one torch, and one frogspawn. I would like to keep the tank softie/lps. Right now I'd like to get the tank clean looking again. Getting rid of...

Dsb/plenum/bare Bottom For Already Established Aquarium

All, I have been battling a diatom outbreak recently. After some study I have come to the conclusion that one of my issues was my skimmer not being adequate for my system. I have recently purchased a newer skimmer rated 2x for my system. I feel this will be helpful. Installing the new skimmer...

    Just A Observation

If you ever really wanted to be freaked out and/or amazed just get a flashlight and check your tank out after lights out. You wouldn't believe the critters in there. For instance, I had previously thought all my hermits had perished and that both my emerald crabs had vanished. Well that...

    Brown Stuff On Substrate

After doing some extensive research today (all day in fact) I have come to the conclusion that yes I am having a Diatom bloom. I found this strange as I never had this before and my tank is about 2 1/2 years old. I now need to find the cause of this. I know silicates have something to do with...

    Brown Stuff On Substrate

I do have a CUC but I should probably add 20-30 more hermits. Maybe even a brittle star.

    Brown Stuff On Substrate

This is a really stupid question, and one I think I should know because I've been doing this for a couple years now. What is the brown stuff that accumulates on the bottom of my tank? Could it be detrious? There is a lot of it.

    9010 Tunze Comline Doc Skimmer

Please let me know your thoughts on that skimmer. I have been looking at the tunzes myself along with about 15 other skimmers. Its hard to make a decision.

    Dsb Or Plennum

I seem to full of questions the past few days . . . I would like to add a DSB or a Plenum to my already established 75 gallon with the thought that either would help me with my phosphate issues. I have read a lot on both and they both seem very beneficial. A few questions. . . a. If anyone...

    Phosphate Issue

I currently use a RO unit after using tap for over 2 years. In that two year period I had very low noticeable algea groth in the tank. I have been using the RO for about 2 months now. I perform twice monthly 10% water changes using Instant Ocean. I had used a in sump refugium, but that does not...

    Phosphate Issue

I am having a very difficult time getting my phosphate levels down to 0. I have film algae in the display and hair algea in my refugium. If anyone has any experiences erradicating the issue please let me know. I am at wits end here!!!

    Mixing Clowns?

I think the thing when adding a second clown is to ensure you pick the other sex. The reason clowns coexist in such a tandem is that they are most probably a mated pair. Now you state the smaller of the clowns has passed. I believe that it would have been the male that passed. In your case I...

    Should I?

A aquarium can be easily set up with an one time initial outlay of funds if done properly and to the expectations and specification the inhabitants require. If the proper equipment is purchased at first the long term cost will be less than if you purchase cheaper equipment now and have to...

    Cuc?

Just my little opinion when purchasing a CUC. Firstly remember that any online retailer is attempting to make a profit and thusly recommend a CUC that is a lot more than necessary. I think having 1 snail per 2 gallons seems to work fine. I also put some in the refugium/sump to stop any hair...

    Flow Rate Musing.

i agree completely with the LPS. I do have a longer tentacled hammer coral right now and the flow is blowing him around pretty good. One of the things I have been debating is how the flow is distributed. I see a lot of folks using one or two powerheads to provide the 40x flow. But something...

    Flow Rate Musing.

After some research in regards to flow rate in the aquarium I have understood that the flow for a LPS/SPS tank should be in the range of 20-40x turnover, or even higher if possible. I also have read that proper reef flow should somehow incorporate surge, turbulence, and laminar flow. In order...

Best Lighting For 125 Gallon Tank

If you could cut out holes in the top then on the sides it would be best. The side holes would be for fans. Two on the left side blowing cool air in, and two on opposite side sucking the hot air out.

    Algae Problems

has your temperature been fluctuating at all? I understand that in tank of your size it is very difficult to keep the temp stable. That may be an issue as well. If you are getting store bought RO water I would check the parameters there too. Too many time an LFS may have left their RO unit to...

    Algae Problems

Yes certainly buy one. It doesn't have to be through the roof to cause an algae outbreak. Check the parameters first. If it is high I would check your source water. If you are getting any phosphates coming out of your RO water then there is an issue with the unit. Maybe the cartridge needs...

    Fire Shrimp Question

Chances are the hawkfish will cause an issue. They eat shrip so it would be natural that it would attack your firs shrimp. As for the shrimp hiding, it is completely natural for them to stay out of the way, usually only coming out after dark or during feeding. Adding another fireshrimp probably...

    Vortech Vs Tunze Maker

What are your opinions on this. Personally, after seeing some demonstrations, I think the Vortech is the better option. It can make great wave motion without having a humongous box in the tank.

    Ro Unit Help

Thank you both for the quick responses. I've never really ever plumbed anything like this before so I'm a little hesitant. And the fact that my girlfriend would completely lose it if there is a flood in the kitchen doesn't help either. Ok, so under my sink I have a connection that goes to the...

    Ro Unit Help

I am about to make my first RO unit purchase. I am going to keep the unit under the sink in my apartment, so I do not have a lot of room for a reservoir. The reservoir I was going to use is a plastic 10 gallon water cooler. I typically need 2-3 gallons a day for top off. My question is as...

    Calcium Supplements

If you don't have many coral than water changes should put you in the proper calcium zone. I currently hover around the 550-600 mark. I only have 2 LPS. What brand of Salt do you use? I say this because from what I gather the mix itself should be more than sufficient to keep calcium high. If...

    Lighting Possibilities

Yes I totally agree. I'm in process of reducing my phosphates. It's going to take a while, but I have time. I'm also in the planning process of setting up a external closed loop system. I don't want to drill, so I'm going to make it completely external. Hopefully, I'll have everything I need by...

    Lighting Possibilities

All, I have just read about this aquarium. http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-12/totm/index.php From what I read he has about 296 watts of T8/5 lighting. He is able keep nice SPS coral with this. I currently light my aquarium with 2 150 halides. I have a typical 75 gallon. My question are as...

    In Lieu Of A Ro

I would certainly do so if I had the room. Unfortutunately the apartment doesn't lead to a lot of room to keep a water container. My 75 evaporates about 2-3 gallons a day also. So I would need a lot of water to keep in the container.

    In Lieu Of A Ro

Actually I already have a refugium that I have to prune every two weeks or so. I have used Chemipure, a refugium, and weekly water changes yet the phosphates are still too high. I am going to have to assume it is the tap water I have used.

    In Lieu Of A Ro

Since I live in an apartment it is very difficult to have a RO unit setup. My LFS, who is highly knowledgeable, stated that he has used the following on his own tanks and has worked very very well. Please see attachment. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod...amp;pcatid=4484 In my 75 I...

    Dumb Lighting Question

Excellent. So instead of having to buy a whole new system, I can use the one I have an change the bulb and ballast. That should save me hundreds of dollars. Dumb Lighting Question

I have a feeling the answer to this is no, but since I have no electrical knowledge whatsoever I thought it best to ask. I have 2 150 halides. If I simply made a change to the ballast and changed the bulb, would I be able to upgrade the unit to a 250?

    Clown Fish

Truthfully I don't think it would work. My Cin. Clown has been the boss of my 75 for 2 years. He gets along well most of the time, but when he gets pissy he chases everyone away. If the match isn't perfect you may end up with a dead clown.
