What The Heck Is Going On With My Bichirs?

Checked my Nitrates after the water change, and they are down to 10ppm. Going to get the meds this afternoon.

What The Heck Is Going On With My Bichirs?

Pretty much all white, just a tiny bit of red in the areas the sores are new and spreading to. Where the skin is tender, I guess.

What The Heck Is Going On With My Bichirs?

No lumps or cysts. Filling up the tank now with fresh water. I'm in Orlando, FL, USA, like it says in my profile. I have access to metronidazole from my work (LFS) so probably going with that stuff, since it works wonders.

What The Heck Is Going On With My Bichirs?

Doing a water change now, to dilute it. I can tell the Melafix is affecting the others. I'm using the freshwater master test kit, by API. The liquid tester. It's like the top layer of skin has been eaten off and all that's underneath are the bichirs' rough armor plating, so I guess you could...

Tested water: Ammonia: 0ppm pH: 7.5 Nitrite: 0ppm Nitrate: 40ppm (I'm overstocked atm, they didn't eat their food last night, and dead fish) Going to do a water change tmw to clear up the nitrates. Looking into getting metronidazole for broad spectrum antibiotic, etc. Any other clues would...

What The Heck Is Going On With My Bichirs?

Hey everyone, haven't been on here in a while. I came home to a dead Polypterus retropinnis the other night, so thinking it was just a freak accident, I changed the water and went on my way. The next morning, I wake up to see multiple bichirs covered in what looks like bites marks from a pleco...

    Siamese Tiger Fish

You're not going to find one at a small size, since they have not been exported for a long time (hence the high price). Pulchers used to be just as cheap as microlepis, but the exportation ban has made their prices sky rocket and make all the ones available only larger specimens. Good luck.

    Siamese Tiger Fish

Yep. There are a few different species, so we might be talking about different types of dats here, but the true one is definitely D. pulcher.

    Dwarf Yellow Honey Gouramis

Do they retain their yellow color as adults, or do they turn to orange most other honeys? Our "dwarf honeys" came in as little yellows today at the shop and I wanted to pick a couple up, as long as they kept that yellow.

What To Feed A Juvee Senegal Bichir

Brine shrimp and bloodworms are great. Small sinking cichlid pellets and shrimp pellets are a nice all-around diet as well. Basically, if it can fit in it's mouth and it's high in protein, you're set. :good:

    Mealworms ?

Mealworms are usually fed to arowanas, so I don't see why you wouldn't try and give it to other fish as well. The only thing I would worry about is the hard exoskeleton on the mealies, so I would make sure the fish you are feeding it to can digest and bite through that hard exterior.

    12 Inch Ornate In With....

Normal Behavior For A Bichir Eel

That's not entirely true. Polypterus senegalus ("Dinosaur Eel") are very active during the day. Sometimes zooming across the front of the tank all day. :P Many of my other bichir species are active as well, with the exception of my P. ornatipinnis.

    Ornate Bichir

Sexing and and all bichirs has nothing to do with the tails and every thing to do with the anal fin, as beblondie stated. Here's an excellent chart I have found on it: What other personal experiences do you want to know about? They are more nocturnal as youngsters and get more active during...
