Oh bugga, I dosed with this stuff at the weekend. Today the suspect fish was hidden in a corner, not moving, suspecting the worst i removed him from the tank, no signs of life at all, and disposed of the body. Now I read he could just have been asleep. Bah. :sad:

My lights are on timers, so in the morning one light comes on for an hour, then the other one comes on. Then at night the moonlights come on just as the main lighting goes off. Tho the fish don't get too phased, lights to them just seem to mean food :)

I had a common plec who did a brilliant job on algae ... but I didnt really notice, til i had to rehome him (he got too big) ... The algae really began to build up again within a couple of weeks. I bought a small bristlenose plec last Friday (very cute little fella in an ugly kinda way :) ) and...

To conclude this thread ... I went to a lfs and had them test my tank water ... the results were exactly the same as mine i.e. high gh and kh and also slightly alkaline (7.4). Therefore, I have decided to stop CO2 injection completely and resort to fertiliser tabs to the roots of the plants...

I have a Fluval 2 in my bedroom and can't hear it at all. The 3+ downstairs is the same, I spent a good couple of minutes earlier on today, trying to make sure that it was on as you can't tell by the sound. So long as they are kept unclogged that is :)

Aquatics-online were pretty good with replacing my test kit ... Monday - posted faulty kit back to them Tuesday - received and replied to emails regarding options for replacement Wednesday - received new Hagen / Nutrafin KH/GH test kit So, this evening i've retested my tank water again kh ~ 11...

Not really answering you question, but I'm sure I read a good post about what to stock in small tanks, which would help in the 7g .... here it is. It's aimed at 10g tanks, but you'll get the idea :)

I've definately learnt loads here (and the fish mortality rate has much improved :thumbs:) But now theres just so much info, it's taking me forever to choose which fish to add to the bottom area of the tank. Think I'll be heading to the lfs with a pen and paper and writing the names of the fish...

I've had an email from API saying that the Gh and Kh test kits expire after 3 years, I'd imagine the rest of the range would be similar.

Water changes defineately the way to go, (though I once tried Nitra-Zorb, which helped) Just out of interest, what are the levels from your tap? (Not that, that is the problem as the UK standard is 50ppm)

I know what you mean, although I'm not sure my level of "responsibility to keep stuff alive" would change, I'd be just trying to do the best i could (like most of us i suppose, or we wouldnt be on this forum) regardless of the source of the funding. Having said that, fish do die, and my family...

Thanks again for those links. I've read (and reread!) them (sober :)) I'm still not too sure about the CO2 levels - both in the tank and straight from the tap. CO2 seems to be higher than recommended for fish ... "However one must pay attention to the behaviour of the fish as levels higher...
