    What does "pearling" mean?

Hey Folks, I've seen some references on the internet to "pearling" being a good indication of healthy plants in a planted tank. Was wondering what that meant, can't find a definition anywhere. Thanks!

    L. meleagris and L. speciosus... same?

Thanks cichlidmaster... BTW, is Lamprogine a word? If it is does it encompass both genus' Lamprologus and Neolamprologus?

    L. meleagris and L. speciosus... same?

I recently picked up a trio of Lamprologus meleagris from my lfs. I've been doing some research, and it seems like meleagris and speciosus might be the same fish? It's so confusing to keep up with constantly changing taxonomy, I was wondering if anyone knew if they were the same species, or...

    Panting fish

Be careful when you treat your loaches for white spot, they're pretty sensitive to medications... most recomend that you only use half the normal dosage for scaleless fish. My father killed a couple of beautiful 9+" clown loaches that were in his 125 gal when he treated the tank for ich.

    J. dickfeldi

Here's a photo from my 20 gal long mini tang. biotope. Most of the tanks residents are shellies (lamprologis and neolamprologus), but I have a pair of J. dickfeldi. They're by far the largest inhabitents in the tank, but also the most peaceful so far.

    Curious about Cichlids

Would like to qualify what I meant by "community tank", I have a pair of p. pulcher in a general community tank... it's not limited to cichlids. Currently it has 3 mollies, a school of tetras, a school of tiger barbs, a few yo yo loaches, and a few ottocinclus. My kribs have staked out a small...

    Curious about Cichlids

I'm pretty new to cichlids myself, so I hope you'll take my experience for what it's worth. My experience so far is that easy and beginner suited fish is all relative. Many cichlids can deal with a variety of water conditions, stability is the most important factor as their native environment...

    PH for Kribs

My pH was same as yours, 7.6... Mine were fine except I couldn't get them to breed. I lowered the pH over the course of a week to 7, and last night I noticed eggs (and all the other fish in the tank in the opposite corner :P ).

SMB, just noticed that you're in Ohio too. Have you checked out Aquarium Adventures giant sale? In Columbus all fish are 55% off, and quite a bit of equipment's on sale too.

    mollys have white spots

You might also consider using aquarium salt in the tank if you're not already... Doc Wellfish makes a good product, it comes in handy for alot of things and is pretty cheap.

    Any algae eaters besides plecs?

What about synodontis (sp?) I also really like ottocinclus, they're so small and fast that other fish seem to tolerate them.... at least my krib's ignore them. Anythen else that goes near their cave gets severely heckled.

Pelvicachromis sp. aff. pulcher - p. "Sacrimontis"

Thanks Tim & Impur... I use Hagen Bio~Max in a media bag in my 30 gal with an AquaClear HOT filter. I think I'll just take out half of the ceramic bio~max rings, and put them in the new filter. I think I'll probably keep a close eye on the 30 gallon though, I'm a little worried about throwing...

    pelmatichromis pulcher

Krib's are supposed to be very sensitive to Nitrates... don't know if you've checked that? I just lost a female krib to high temp... went up to almost 32c before I noticed my heater was stuck on.

I found someone in my local area with 6 young Giant Krib's. I'm not sure where I'm going to put them yet, but it's so difficult to find interesting species in my area so I can't say no! :D How large of a tank would everyone recomend for these guys? I could make some room in my 10 gallon at...

    another newbie

Welcome to the site. Pirahna's are so cool, I love watching them eat at the lfs. I was shocked at how shy they were... red bellies at least. The first time I saw them with their hands in the tank cleaning off algae, I almost had a heart attack. Not nearly the man-eaters of their...

i am staring a tank to breet guppys

I think you could put just about any other community fish in the tank... I've read livebearers will breed no matter what the tank mates are, and it's definately true with my mollies. If you want the fry to survive you might consider one of those breeder thingies that hang on the side of the...

    zonked tiger barbs

I'm glad their ok now! Did the infection go away on the sick fish? There are days that my tiger barbs terorize the tank, and I'd love to knock 'em out for a few days (hope this doesn't offend anyone... mean it in good fun :D )

Cycleing a new tank & adjusting pH

Thanks SMB... I wish I would have joined the forum before I started cycleing that tank so I knew about it. I was lucky enough to find Bio Spira, and it was relatively cheap for my 30 gallon (well cheaper than losing 4 or 5 fish at least!). I didn't have the results that I've heard advertised...

    Boycott Petco

We have the ASPCA... I don't know that their taken too seriously though. Unfortunately they've shot themselves in the foot by being a little too militant in the past. Ya' gotta' give people time to catch up with you instead of expecting them to be with you overnight.

    Bettahex

BettaBabe - You might want to keep a close eye on your new 30 if you add a couple of females. My brother's betta experience was that the male killed the female after breeding. Don't know if this is a rule, an exception, or otherwise. Congrats on the new tank!

Today I lost a female krib, my heater somehow got stuck in the on position... before I noticed it the temperature was 90 degrees. I took the hood off the tank and unplugged the heater, but before the temperature dropped she was already dead. I ended up having to scrap the heater, it won't...

Peat moss to soften water and lower pH

My ph is a bit high on my community tank, somewhere between 7.6 and 7.8. It doesn't seem to be bothering my fish too much, but my plants aren't dealing well and I'd like to add some fishies with lower pH requirements. I've heard that using peat is a great way to do it as it's a more gradual...

    ammonia absorbing charcoal

Hagan makes an ammonia nitrifying insert for their aquaclear line. I've never used it though, I was afriad it would interfere with my complete bio filter developing and I'd be stuck always using it. You might be able to make it work it work in your filter.

    Got a new tank!

I miss the PNW, I used to live in Seattle and Portland. Now I'm landlocked... ahhhhhh! Out of curiousity, when you re-decorate a tank... is it better to slowly move things (like decorations) out of the aquarium so as not to cause another mini cycle? I'm soooo jelous Missy! :fun:
