What sized containor/tank do you think bettas

Not trying to scare you, but goldfish actually need 10 gallons per fish. (Black moors are goldfish.) I know it seems crazy, but your little moor will grow to 6-8 inches and live 10+ years if properly cared for. Most people don't know much about the needs of goldfish when they purchase them...

    1/2 gallon 2 small?

A light will help keep the betta warm. If your house gets cool, you can also wrap the betta's tank in towels to help keep the water temp. from dropping too much at night, etc. You do have to be careful about the light heating the water too much, though. A one gallon tank is better than a half...

    Suggestions please!

We have a betta that is about the same colors as yours. He is my 4 yr. old daughter's and she named him Togepi, after a Pokeman character. My son's betta is red, so he is Buckeye (Ohio State Buckeyes...), and I have a red/white one that is named Valentine.

    Betta Ammonia Level Help

I have no experience cycling a betta tank. But, for goldfish tank, you should be seeing nitrites by now, unless you use salt. Salt is good for the fish, but it slows down the bacteria process. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just causes nitrites to remain lower longer. If you're using...

    My Poor Betta

You mentioned gold coloring, so I'm wondering if this could be velvet. I've never dealt with velvet personally, so I can't be of more help. Hopefully someone could explain velvet and how to treat it....????

    Betta Ammonia Level Help

I know for bigger tanks, you should do 20-30% water changes daily. I do that on my two 10 gals. You need the nitrite and nitrate testers, because you may need to continue with frequent water changes those spike as well. If you're only checking for ammonia, you will not know when the nitrites are...

    Female bettas

Adding more females MAY help the aggresion of the more dominant one. However, there are many times where the aggressive female will kill other females. I have also heard of situations where all seems well at first, but later one ends up dead. So, I can only tell you that if you do add more...

And sorry, but gouramis are NOT good with bettas. They are territorial just like bettas. (I'm not sure about females).

a thanks with some more questions...

You're so welcome! You ask some really good questions. Well, there are some bettas that get along with some fish. I'm not sure, however, that other types of fish will be able to tolerate a tank w/ no filter. You see, bettas have a special organ (the labyrinth) that allows them to breath air from...

    bettas good community fish?

Bettas really aren't hard to keep, you just have to do it the right way :) They tend to do better by themselves, but there are some with not-so-dominant traits that can be kept with specific types of fish (peaceful and w/out long/colorful fins). The jars and cups you see them in are meant to...

the tank, and some wierd behaviour....

It's good you asked about the water. Do you add a chlorine/chloramine remover? You must remove the toxins from your tap water when you do water changes. The second problem might be your PH. Did the new water match the PH of the old water? You should invest in an inexpensive PH tester, there are...

Can my betta be housed with the following fish...

Yes, you totally have too many fish for a tank that size. And if I may add, the goldfish rule is 1 gfish per 10 gallons. There are reasons for this: golfish ARE very messy (produce a lot of ammonia), the average ifespan is 10 yrs. (the oldest being 43!), and they can easily get over 6" for the...

putting in a female with a male?

First, you really should not keep a betta in a vase with a plant. Most of the time, some roots of the plant will start to decay and may develop a fungus under the water. This could mean death to your little betta friend. There are a lot of people who know how to keep aquarium plants with fish...

    bettas good community fish?

If you put two females together, it is best to have minimum 3. This helps establish pecking order. Actually, the more, the better (considering you tank size and with reason, of course). Having more than two helps distribute any dominance related terrorizing on the others. But even then, you...

    My first bout w/Ich

You're right about the cost of a 10 vs. anything else! But consider the other facts of natural betta life. They are naturally built to live in small spaces w/ minimal water. They produce little ammonia in comparison with most other tropical fish. And also consider their life expectancy- 3 years...

    My first bout w/Ich

I'm not an expert, but I disagree that you need a filter on a betta. I've done a lot of research on bettas and goldfish. (My goldies are in their own filtered, bubbled 10 gals) I do agree with you on the fact that bettas need warm water. But you don't necessarily need a heater. You just need...

Wow, I got bit by that betta bug in Petsmart today too!!! (I hear the theme song from Twilight Zone now....) I got my first one about 4 days ago. My 4 yr old daughter begged me for weeks. (We have two new-ish 10 gal tanks w/ two goldies, so we are at the lfs alot...) Anyway, Togepi, the first...

    Pregnant or Dropsy?

For goldfish, treat with Nitrofurazone for antibacteria, or Praziquantel for internal parasites.....this is a quite a bind your fish is in. Wish you had some other sign as to what the cause is. Dropsy is treatable if caught early enough and if you know what the cause is.... Good luck.

    How can i breed glodfish?

Don't take offense, but you are WAY overstocking your tanks. One goldfish per 10 gallons, please refer to http://www.goldfishparadise.com/ for some help on your issues, they are some mighty smart goldie people!

    To salt....or not to salt

Some info I've found on salt: It is a good practice to use salt when quaranteeing a new goldfish or treating one for bacterial infection. .3% salt is best, which equals 1 tablespoon per gallon of water. Salt does in fact alleviate stress in goldfish (promoting the slime coat), and does kill...

    Anyone have ADF's?

Hi Pufferpack, I have the African Dwarf Frogs. They only get about an inch in body length. The African Clawed Frogs do get up to about 5 inches (I think). I'm now having problems, as i had to clean the tank and change the substrate (the frogs can ingest the small gravel). My male, who sang the...

What are some other good cheap pets

I have a pair of African Dwarf Frogs. They are totally aquatic. Although they don't do much during the day, they become really active in the evening. The male sings as well. They only get to be about an inch (body length) and are easy to maintain, as long as you keep up water quality and provide...

    Bettahex

I agree with HooDude, but also with BettaBabe. I think if you and the fish are comfortable with the choice of size of tank, then everything is fine. As long as the water quaility is kept up religiously. I personally would go with anything big enough to have a filter. I tend to think that less...

    Longest living Goldfish?

It looks like the average is about 10-15 years, and 25 isn't uncommon when they're really well-cared for. I've only had mine since April.... But I'm trying to follow the expert advice, so I'll get back with you on this subject in 2014 and let you know how it's going. ;)

Alex, I actually mispelled it, it's ryukin. Here's a link, if you're interested http://www.adelaideaquariums.com.au/faqs/f...ish/ryukin.html I don't think I'm going to put any other fish with him, I only have a 10 gal., and since he is a messy fish, I don't want to worry about overstocking...

    To salt....or not to salt

Thanks for your help. I didn't really think golds needed the salt on a regular basis. I figured that it might help with the stress of moving to a new tank (as stated on the salt package and from other literature I've read up on) . Anyway, this morning he seems to be doing better- swimming around...

Also posted in the Beginner thread... I recently moved my ryukin goldfish to an appropriate sized tank. I used "goldfish salt" to help protect him. Mini Puffers and goldfish?

Just a note about the goldfish.... I have a ryukin, and I'm not sure that they require the same as comet. But after some research, I conclude that you should keep one gold per 10 gallons if you are keeping them for life. I just relocated mine to a 10 gallon and I'm only adding a cory and a snail...
