To my knowledge, it converts the ammonia into ammonium, and by the time it reverts back to ammonia, the beneficial bacteria has converted it to nitrate. However, if that's incorrect or outdated, please let me know o:

Looks ugly, but the fish are still digging around. I think flow hurts the cyanobacteria, so I moved the filter around to see if that does anything.

FTS, had an algae breakout that hurt the Anubias, but I think all's well now. That sponge filter in the front is just there to grow bacteria: Dancing boy:

Welcome! That moss looks dead to me. If you find any green spots in it, though, you can trim them off and try to grow them. Too much exposure to the salt can harm your current betta, though. If he's not showing signs of your last betta's illness, I'd push toward getting the water back to...
