Crowntail Duo

Magnus has had issues with fin biting and fin rot for the past few weeks. After extra water changes and adding cover didn't help, I tested the water and found that my well water is at .25 ammonia. I ordered Seachem Prime and have been adding it with new water, but he's still not looking so great. His fins have stopped rotting, though. I hope he'll pull through.

Prime is over rated in my opinion as it only binds ammonia for 24 to 48 hours after that if still present it releases the ammonia back into the water. There are better products on the market.

You could try pre filtering the water in a bucket to remove the ammonia using Ammonia & Nitrite Remover Sponge, Basically pop some in a second filter and run it for 24 hours before adding the water to the tank.

To my knowledge, it converts the ammonia into ammonium, and by the time it reverts back to ammonia, the beneficial bacteria has converted it to nitrate. However, if that's incorrect or outdated, please let me know o:

No it only binds it..
1. Prime will bind ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate for 24-48 hours. At which point, if they are still present, will be released. Of course, we are more concerned with ammonia and nitrites, rather than nitrates.

Yes that is correct, Prime will instantly bind the ammonia but will slowly release it back into the tank so plants and bacteria should take care of it.
