where can i get them ?

Not many aquarists will send live fish on-line. Guppies are sold at most lfs. they are the commonest fish around.

    guppy questions

The humble guppy. A much underrated fish. Also known as the millions fish, you will know why when they start breeding. They should not be going up and down the side of the glass. This is a sign of stress. What other fish do you have in with them? What is the overall temp. of the tank. Guppies...

    Reverse Osmosis Questions

I'm with jamnog with this one.Same question. The fish that you have or are going to purchase from your lfs, are they in RO water? If not you could be heading into rough water(no pun intended) The total change in water chemistry could upset your fish and cause health problems. What I may suggest...

Fin Rot Not Responding to Treatment

The symptoms you describe and the treatment are standard and classic. Obviously with running a commercial concern you know your stuff. I have consulted my resources and in a nutshell, if the rot has taken hold and has infected the fish itself and from your description it has. Then you can either...

    What is ICH?

This is a common question that is often asked, what is ich and how is it recognisable and what causes it? The real term is ICHTHYOPHTHIRIASIS. OR commonly known as white spot. It is an extremely comon parasite that affects aquarium fish. It is highly infectious and potentially lethal and...

    Pond full of fry

If the parents are in the same pond and you want to keep the fry, I suggest that you seperate them. Koi carp take the same time as any carp species to show their colouration. 6 months or more.It depends what their growing conditions are. Obviously well fed and not being preyed upon all helps in...

    trimming plants

Cutechic, I think your lfs loves you. They can see you coming a mile away.   Your lfs are one of those that I would go in with my eyes wide open. In other words before you go in, know exactly what you want. If you are unsure of your needs, ask us first and you'll be given...

    Live plants

cutechic. Your lfs is probably right about the lighting, however light encourages algae. Algae, after at is a species of plant and all plants obtain their food by means of photosynthesis. So you need to balance out what is practical for your tank. Remember unless your tank is placed in a...

    What next for my tank

In a tank containing gouramis I would suggest getting Cardinals insted of Neons. If the Neons are small they could be mistaken for food. Mabe19 Cardinals to have a flash of colour? Odd numbers look more pleasing than even numbers, also cuts down on the in-fighting that sometimes goes on...

    mysterious deaths

How big is your tank? As in length times breath. Many aquarist have large depth tanks saying that they have a 2 gallon tank or a 200 gallon tank. I have a friend who has a 200 gallon tank, but it's only 15" long by 12" wide, the rest is made up by depth. He does have super airation in it though...

    so sad

I'm so sad to hear about your Cory pebbles. Depending on their lifestyle, 5 years is not uncommon. What I do suggest though, because they enjoy to be in groups of their own species, when you do buy some more make it a group of an uneven number. Don't just buy another one.

    feeding feeders?

I have kept terrapins in the past, until they got too large for my tank. I had the terrapins for 15 years, when they got too big I gave them to the aquatic centre. Sealife Centres as they call themselves now. However they were fed on a small amount of mealworms a day. What I had done to my tank...

    Salt

I would be quite concerned with your lfs putting salt in ALL their tanks as a matter of course. The first question I would ask is why do they need to do this as a procedure? Then I would look closely at their fish. Neons/Cardinals are two of the non salt tolerant species and as semper fi...

    food for plants

Using flourescent tubes from an electrical store-you would probably be using "white light". Not particurarly good for plants, but will show up your fishes. Try it and see,if you have problems you can always change to the specialist tubes. Plant food. Well I use Plant Gro, from Nutrafin. It's a...

    DIY WATER COOLER

The idea is sound, but have you thought about the practicalities. Where are you going to house the fridge and how are the cooling pipes going run from fridge to your tank. To boot how are you going to exit the pipes from the fridge or enter the fridge to your radiators, without causing a...

Brownish black "fur" growing on plants!

Phos-zorb should help control future outbreaks and it will absorb the phosphates already present in your tank. Yes also reduce the lighting to around 10 hours. Something else, if you are using tubes, are they pure white light or are they specialist tubes to show the colour of your fish. If your...

    fin rot

Stick on ones are economical, but if you can't stretch to that one glass one can be shared amongst 4 tanks. If you've a coldwater setup, do you really need a heater?

This is one of my tanks.

Yeah DG!  You've got it, it's one of a pair of cold water weather loaches. They have acclimatised themselves to trop. waters now and to put them back in the pond would surely kill them. They seem very happy with the rest of their tankmates.

big puddle in my yard filled with cat fish

Whatever you do don't try and catch them by hand. They have pectoral and dorsal spines to them that can inflict a nasty wound, even cause you blood poisioning if it infects your bloodstream. Use a net. The net can be made from a pair of stockings/tights tied around a wire coat hanger. Take some...

Brownish black "fur" growing on plants!

What you have is known as "brush" algae. It is highly invasive and algaecides will not touch it. Boiling, disinfecting and scrubbing the decor and rocks merely spreads this type of algae. It attacks the edges of plants and clings onto any rough surface. There is no known solution. The only way...

    fin rot

It is difficult to give you an answr, but I can give you a suggestion as to treatment. Interpet sell a product designed for fin rot, you may be able to tr that. Do you know if the affected fish you have are salt tolerant, if they are you might be able to bathe them in a salt solution. A highly...

    brine shrimp

It'll only cloud your water if you've overfed them and there are bloodworm decomposing in the substrate. Cloudy water usually means a bacterial bloom, and bacteria only bloom if there's food for them to do so. Ergo no food, no bloom.

    brine shrimp

1 gallon tank is really too big to hatch the number you're looking to rear. Why not try a brine shrimp hatchery, you can buy them from most good lfs. How many will hatch?- Well how long is a piece of string? :P Sorry to sound flippant, but there is just no way of knowing. A lot depends on the...

Hello TomSawyer, There are two questions to your posting. I'll take the easiest one first. anyone ever have this problem?

Is this grass artificial? The reason I ask is that you rarely see grass for sale designed for aquariums. Yes you have things like java moss which is an excellent breeding medium, but it is not, "grassy. If it is artificial, I would try and steer clear of it, as anything that is not real has no...

    Aquarium salt

Neons/Cardinals, White cloud minnows, Harlequins and a few bottom feeders are not salt tolerant. There are other fish too, you will need to do some research before dosing your tank with salt. Salt is basically an antiseptic and as such needs to be used with care.

    Rocks off a beach

Dave, if you're in Scotland, you can't be too far from a freshwater loch. Assuming you can get to a freshwater loch, then the skies the limit. Make sure you disinfect the rocks first with aquarium disinfectant and then throughly clean them off. Better still, if you know where your water source...

    cycling a new tank

It's a matter of personal preference. Adding plants in the tank starts the nitrogen cycle off, but be sure to feed your plants at least once a week with an aquatic plant food, until they become established. It'll add a little interest in the tank and help stablise the water.
