I put 3 feeder guppy fry in my daughters turtle tank about 5 days ago, I felt like I should feed them and my daughter responded with "uhhh mom, they ARE the food" but I fed them anyway and it just made a mess(too much food), so I netted all I could out and I haven't fed them since.
Will they just eat the crumbs of the turtles food? Or will they eventually starve? -_-

Why are you feeding feeders to a turtle?Do they only eat live food or can they be fed on turtle pellets (if there is such a thing)?

Feeders are not a good idea to feed to anything unless as a last resort if the animal will not eat other foods.
The fact that the turtle has not eaten the feeders straight away makes me think it has probably been raised on a alternative food, with the couple of fish that i have which i have been unable to train to eat other foods (needle fish and siamese tiger fish) feeders are eaten within a few seconds of being tipped into the tank.
I would remove them and let them live a normal happy life.

Hi wuvmybetta

So you are feeding turtles with feeders, in which case the feeder fish are going to die. Why feed them?
They will be able to feed on the leftovers in the turtle tank. But as CFC said. If they were not eaten as soon as they hit the water, they are not likly to be eaten. Or have you been over feeding the turtles. I know it is not a turtle, but I only feed me red foot tortise every other day.

I feed my oscars on poor quality angel fish, which i breed, (I only sell quality fish) (they also have a staple diet of cichlid pellets). My oscars wait just below the water surface, when they see me aproching the tank with a fish in hand. The angels are history within a second of them hitting the water, even the larger ones.

I have kept terrapins in the past, until they got too large for my tank. I had the terrapins for 15 years, when they got too big I gave them to the aquatic centre. Sealife Centres as they call themselves now. However they were fed on a small amount of mealworms a day. What I had done to my tank was to terrascape it. In other words built the gravel from one side of the tank and then angled it up to the surface at the other. There was a powerful external cannister filter and the terrapins could swim if they wanted to or bask on the dry gravel. There was a shallow ceramic pot buried in the gravel on the dry side and this is where I placed their food. Either live or specially prepared turtle food. The learned to come to the pot for their food. I never fed them any of my fish.

well i fed mine live fish sometimes and no they dont eat the fish straight away but yes they do like them and will chase after them and bite their fins to slow them down and the make the fishes death nice and quick with a snap right in the middle of the fish. so if i was going to feed feeder fish to anything i think a turtle would be one of the best creatures it could be fed too. they mine didnt kill a fish and then decide to let it rot they kill for food. as for feeding the feeder fish there is no harm in it and if it makes the feeder fish bigger snack for the turtle then fine.

I do say Dolphin...................,

That post just grossed me out  :grr:

I'm sorry, but I can't imagine actually feeding fish...FISH!!! I know some like it and NEED it, but I could personally never get one that did because I can't even catch my own fish to take them out of my tank....my mother has to come over and get them out if I need them out for some reason or other. I'm literally a BIG weenie when it comes to fish. I can't even swim in lakes because I am :*) afraid of them.......... :/ !!!

I can't imagine having to hand feed something or watch fish eat other fish. I can clean my tank okay because I am somewhat use to my fish and none of them (except Polly my Blood Parrot) even come close to my hand when in there, but it is definitley a new experience for me being so close to fish....hand wise!

Hi Silver

Sorry to have grossed you out.

As I breed about 1000 angel fish per week, I have to get rid of the poor quality ones some how. A quick death, at the hands, (well mouth) of another fish, is the most humane way in which I can get rid of them.

Sorry again. :)

No problem Dolphin (which I LOVE Dolphins by the way  )!!!

I was just stating some unique characteristics of myself........it's a little embarrassing being 24 and being afraid to swim in lakes :*) or not being able to catch my OWN fish out of my OWN tank  !!!

I'm not narotic or anything............just a weenie when it comes to fish :saddam: !!!!

Just because it grossed me out doen't mean I didn't enjoy the post............ -_- okay, that sounded morbid :alien:

Thanks for the replies! :D
I went to feed him/her some pellets this morning and all 3 fry were gone so I guess they were eaten during the night.
And yes it was previously fed fish by my lfs, they keep the turtles in a large "beer barrel" type set up with a huge filter and a constant supply of fish. And the fry were simply for chasing & eating enjoyment. So I will keep supplying them to her weekly, along with the pellets which she usually eats all of (but occasionally misses a couple)
Thanks again for the help!
