The humble guppy. A much underrated fish. Also known as the millions fish, you will know why when they start breeding. They should not be going up and down the side of the glass. This is a sign of stress. What other fish do you have in with them? What is the overall temp. of the tank. Guppies can tolerate quite low temp.,but if it's too high they tend not to be too comfortable. 26 deg. cent. is roughly the accepted norm. There are several,if not more hybrids today and sometimes with that comes more problems. Guppies are usually a first fish for the new fishkeeper. This is because they are quite robust compared with other fish of their ilk. Once you have the ideal conditions for them, try stopping them breeding!
They hide only when stressed or frightened or are being bullied. The heater is the best hiding place because other fish don't like extreme heat, however saying that, the guppy could get burned if too near the heater. My suggestion is to check your tank conditions including the other tank inhabitants.

swiming up and down the glass may mean that its to much lighter on the inside of the tank than the out side i.e. increase the rooms lighting.
best temp i thaught was between 65 and 79 tho they can live in lower temps apparently and also do well in highter temps. thats what i kept mine at.
hanging around the heater is possibly for the heat they like it doesnt mean they need it. try making the heater more horizontal to give a biger surface aria and circulate the heat more.

other tips get yourself a breeding net /trap and an airator lots of cheapo live plants and enjoy your guppys they are cool fish and im shure you will enjoy them.

2 peppered cory's are the only other thing I have in the tank, along with a small plant

I think they like hanging around the heater when its bedtime, dunno why tho

my tank temp is about 27 degrees C

what ratio of males/females could I get away with ??? ie wat is the least possible females I could have per male

I breed guppies and i love them!!! :D The swimming up and down the side of the tank, mine do that when i dont pay attention to them, when I go to the tank they stop it weird

I dont have a heater my water temp stays between 75 and 80 and they do fine breeding like crazy lol

Its good to have 2 females per 1 male, that way when hes after one the other gets a rest :fun:

If you have any more questions I will try to help you!!

I have 20 babies right now a batch born last night, I have 2 females and 1 male, a male and female black molly, and a pleco

The peppered corys are ideal tankmates for guppys so you should have no problems there.
Try putting some more plants in the tank. This will give the guppys some hiding places and will make them feel more secure and less stressed.
Your tank is certainly warm enough. I keep my tank temp at 25 degrees and my guppys are constantly having fry I would think that would be an ideal temp for them.
You should have as many females per one male as possible to avoid the females getting harassed too much.

You said your guppies tend to go to your heater during bedtime. That may be because at night the temperature cools down in and outside of your house. It's probably nothing to be worried about your bettas probably just like to stay warm at night.

guppies swimming up and down the sides of the tank is stress related, my guppies and platies do it from time to time but i think it's due to what is going on in the tank next door (fry tank) make sure there are more plants particularly bushy ones.

Do you have a thermometre on your tank so that you know exactly what the temp is?
