    Sad Hornwort?

you sure your ammonia rise is due to the rotting needles? I do have quite some mulm in the tank, mainly made seemingly by diatoms, but my ammonia never moved a bit from the 0 level. I'm still trying to give the plant a chance, fertilizing lightly, but if it won't work I'll get rid of it and...

    Salvinia

Should I eventually get rid of the few remnants of my struggling hornwort, I'd consider some light-cutting floating plants. Did anybody ever tried Salvinia Natans or similar plants in low-end brackish? Thanks!

    Changing Up The Archer Tank....

Hello Shovelman, I believe you are already familiar with my (B)log. I haven't added any picture recently, the layout didn't change a bit, apart from hornwort looking more and more sad... I got the archers in fresh water, of course, and very slowly (from october to few weeks ago! :D ) changed...

    Sad Hornwort?

I'm pretty much in the same condition: low-end brackish, 2xT5 6500 K tubes, 8 h/day, with a few stems of hornwort. :< I CAN'T get rid of whatever colonizes its needles and makes them rot quickly. It could be diatoms, which I have in fair amounts on the sand since the very beginning, and never...

    Changing Up The Archer Tank....

Hello Shovelman, my archers definitely stick to the "rooted" section of the tank, and only venture in the open half around dinner time. As far as I know, they do prefer shadowy places, so perhaps that's just what yours are doing. As for me, I'm considering to increase the dark areas, possibly...

    Mangrove Environments

Totally agreed Neale, and I'm so glad i could show a different environment such as the river estuary, where the water was very clear. A pleasure to snorkel in there. I have more from Australia, but still in good, old slides. It Will take some time to convert to digital, but i'll do it. Will keep...

    Eheim Thermofilter

Well, this is my first tank, so I can't make comparisons with other devices. They are very well reputed, that's for sure, and being a beginner, I decided to go for them for this reason. After the cycle, water quality is quite stable, apart from the hell of nitrates I get from tap (around 40...

    Eheim Thermofilter

Hello Duke, I was interested, too, and only gave up when I discovered that it's not suitable for salted water (I have brackish). I then bought its non-heated brother, Professionel 3 2073, which has been working like a swiss clock since then (but it's only less than a year!). As a heater, I got...

    Mangrove Environments

Time ago it has been asked in this forum to show pictures of F8 puffers environments, and I had posted some of mangrove swamps I took in Brazil. I decided now to make it a bit more systematic, so I collected what I have from different places in the world. Hopefully it may turn useful as...

    Live Food

Thanks Tonyb, sounds like a good advise. I only recently discovered that that liquid is indeed not just water: definitely not a good idea to add it (although it's about a couple of teaspoons per day I'm adding). The main doubts remain, if the fish will overfeed, or the food will start dying...

    Live Food

Hello all, I have 10 small Parambassis Ranga, at the moment keept in a hatchery to protect them from the attentions of 3 Archers. For the time being they only accept live mosquito larvae. I'll have to leave for about a week, and I was wondering if it's a good idea to throw into their little...

Thanks Neale, yup, it looks like one of them, possibly testudineus. Never heard of these Tetraodontidae, there's a lot of species in this genus! And of course the fisherman got rid of it, it's one of the toxic ones! Cheers!

I was walking among the mangroves downtown Florianópolis (BR) today morning, and a fisherman caught this poor guy. I guess it's a puffer, but anybody knows which one? Flat white belly, about 20 cm in length. You'll be all glad to know that the lucky fish was immediately released.

    Test Kits

I'm new in the hobby, and when starting the cycle I needed a full kit including all the main parameters. Among the ones available, I chose Tropic Marin for price and completeness (pH, KH, NO2, NO3, NH3). For GH I got a separate one. Since it is my very first test kit, I cannot really compare...

    I Got Hydra! :-)

Hello all, thanks to the "hitchiker's guide" pinned in this forum I believe I have a positive ID: hydra. I have just spotted some 10 or so of them on the back glass and on the decor. Size: a few mm max. They are also surrounded by a number of tiniest creatures, bouncing freely around. Copepods...

    Help With Plants In Low-End

Thanks a lot Iliveinazoo, the plant is anchored to the bottom (total depth is about 35 cm), and surely it's the bottom parts most affected by the problem. SG is still at about 1.001, but I never fertilized at all. I started doing it a couple of weeks ago, let's see how it goes. Hopefully...

    Help With Plants In Low-End

I see, thanks. Well, I'll simply wait and see what happens with the snails. That's why we keep aquaria, after all...! Hydrometer: well, it appears to be definitely off by a good amount, measured SG 1.006 instead of the real 1.001 at 25 C. Unfortunately, I'm PRESUMING that it's calibrated at 25...

    Help With Plants In Low-End

Hi Neal, thanks, I admit my hydrometer came without an indication of the calibration temperature, which is indeed an indicator of poor quality... I simply had to assume that it's 25 C, which is indeed the water temperature anyway. The water up to SG 1.001 was made in 5 weeks, by 20% water...

    Help With Plants In Low-End

Hello all, I didn't get any answer from the plant forum, possibly because the right place is here! I have low-end brackish (~SG 1.001, pH 8.2, KH ~9 dH, 2xT5 39W 6500K), plants (Ceratophyllum demersum and Java moss) have been acclimatized to this starting from freshwater in more than 5 weeks...

    Archer Issues....

Hello all, in terms of sociability, I can't feel any hierarchy in my group of 3: the only one visibly behaving differently is The Shy, who stays on hiw own most of the time, and joins at due distance mainly, but not only, at lunch time. The other two swim pretty much along all time. They ALL...

    Archer Issues....

Hello Shovelman, of my 3 Microlepis only one does it in a systematic way, even in daylight. And it can change in a matter of seconds! Few days ago I was feeding, with lights on, he was pale, and by the time it turned around the roots and came out, he was shining again in colours! It is indeed...

    Almost Getting To Kill Ceratophyllum!

I got these beautiful, plump, dark-green stems back in November, which started growing like hell (you could see it by the day), as expected. Mine is NOT a planted tank, I just needed some shade for my glassfish, so I fixed the Ceratophyllum (demersum) on a stone at a corner; relatively low...

    Gh At 32+ Dh!

Thanks folks! Neal, I liked the cartesian approach idea, so I tried it: tap water is at 14 dGH, I added some 4.5 g salt/liter (my tank has 3.5 g/l) and in 48 hours I got 51 dGH! Can it be??! It looks like it's the salt, I'm using Tropic Marin: unfortunately in the package the percentage of the...
