    I really need help asap!

Raising the temp is a method that works on fish that can survive temps that high. Depending on the breed of Betta, some can handle temps as high as 30C. The ones you buy in shops can generally handle the 27C required to break the ich's life cycle, although I generally use a chemical remedy too...

V High Ammonia - please help

The ammonia level will drop as the nitrifying bacteria start eating it and converting it to nitrite, then your nitrite level will shoot up until more bacteria eat that and turn it to nitrate. Plants will absorb some nitrate but not as much as is produced in a well stocked fish tank, so regular...

    Not a *GOOD* sign!

Yea, platty naturally eat mostly vegetable matter, so its good for them to have a bit of real vegetable matter every now and then. Have you recently changed what your feeding them or when you feed them? It sounds like the platty is a little uncomfortable but not critically ill, so try the pea...

    Ich Treatment

Yea, remove it until after you have done a final water change at the end of the treatment (when all the ich has gone)

    Not a *GOOD* sign!

    1. Fish can get constipation etc, but that doesnt normally affect their swimming (swimbladder diseases do that) 2. Its probably best if you have a tank available, as you can keep it dark etc, which is less stressful for the fish so aids recovery 3. could be, but tetra are fairly hardy. Maybe...

    My dwarf gouramis

Use aquarium salt (from your LFS/LPS), and the better quality you can get the better. Pre mix it by taking some water out of the tank and mixing the salt with that, then pouring it back in. Use a reasonable amount of water, the idea is to stop the fish getting burned on bits of undesolved salt...

    dead betta

Tank parameters are all fine. pH 8, GH 8, KH 7, Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 12 There is a kuhli loach living in the tank too at the moment, but he never had any problems with it so I doubt i was a fight, he didnt seem damaged in anyway other than the flaking around his mouth. KF

    dead betta

This afternoon I got home from work to find my betta had died. I have had him 3 months and on sunday I bought a ghost shrimp to go in his tank and help keep it clean. He didnt get on very well with it (lots of flaring and chasing) but if it stayed out of his sight they seemed ok. This afternoon...

    Tropical crabs

My GF recently purchased a pair of tropical crabs for her tank, the retailer didnt really know what to feed them on (it was a pet shop and the 'fish expert' was out). Im guessing frozen brine shrimp and blood worm will be fine, am i right or wrong? KF

    neon with ick i think

P.S. If its ick then its best to treat the whole tank in my oppinion, as its a parasite that only spends part of its life cycle on the fish.

    neon with ick i think

By puffed out what do you mean? If its fluffy then its more likely to be a fungal infection than ick. If you mean its raised above the level of his scales then it could be Ick. There are lots of remedies around for ick. I have had a lot of success with King british WS3. Make sure that the...

    Loosing fish fast

See if your LFS can do tests for contaminants. Check the temperature, in the summer tanks can get quite hot in the day, and then cool down to their normal temp at night (or sometimes not even cool down that far) and this can stress the fish sometimes. Phone your water supply company and check...

    betta

Im pretty sure its not toxic. When adding chemicals to the tank its a good idea to keep a little plastic cup or similar which you use to scoop out some tank water, add the chemical dosage required for the tank, swirl it round a bit then pour it into the tank, trying to get it evenly spread...

    Temperature Fluctuation

They should be ok, the temperature drops in the night so they will cool off a bit then. Make sure you have adequate aeration, as the higher temperature will mean less oxygen in the water. If the temperature starts getting into the 30s you may want to consider pointing a desk fan at the tank to...

    Ill Platy

One of my 2 platy is quite ill. He has a touch of fin rot, and what appears to be a fungal infection on one side. He has also been flashing against the edge of the filter so has got a large inflamed area along the underside. Im guessing this is a fungal infection, I have isolated him, and the...

    Probably been asked before...

After you add fish to a tank thats cycling your ammonia/nitrite will shoot up, then drop again. Use tests to check when its gone down to suitable levels. This will probably take around 2 weeks. KF

    Treating WhiteSpot

On the reccomendation of my LFS I bought King British WS3 to treat the Ich my new Betta has. (I expected it, I bought him from a pet shop) Does anyone have any experience of using this? The other treatment I used (years ago) I needed to change around 30% of the water between this dose but the...

    mid to top fish

Make sure you have some plants at the top of the tank for the hatchets to hide in. Either a cluster of floating plants or some plants growing up from the bottom that reach the surface. Hatchets are lovely fish, make sure you have a good top though coz they can fly. KF
