Finally cycled and ready to go.

Aye, and if they come across other fish or shrimp for instance they'll also take bites out of them. That said they do look quite cute in a nicley set up tank though they don't have a lot of movement. ------------------------------------- HAVE YOU VOTED YET

    Tips for my first aquarium!

Ah, just shows how much I've researched frogs. You'll know the store I was in up Portrack Lane. Bit pricey in there though. Now, funny thing, or at least partly funny as it has to do with my wife's current cognitive ability. We were in one LFS last week and while I mused over various hardscape...

    Sick fish?

I think most people love the idea of breeding the fish they keep, as you do too. I am also dead keen on the idea but I do recognise the problems. The mollies I had, only 2 of them resulted in another 50ish that became a bit onerous to manage as the tank just wasn't up to it., and mollies...

    Tips for my first aquarium!

Agree with Essjay on that. Actually one of my local pet stores has a section selling snakes, frogs, lizards, spiders et al. It's lovely to look at a properly constructed vivarium but I do notice that there's really not much water in them. Frogs, funnily enough are mostly land based except at...

    Possible Cotton Wool Disease

No way back from that I'm afraid. CPD's are fragile already and this looks to be the end of days for this poor fish. Any disease that it's picked up has probably been in the original tank so whatever it was, the chances are that some sort of virus or bacteria is still in the tank. Salt may well...

HOW MANY: Is there life out there?

Those who have fake are more likely to vote fake, as long as it looks good. I see no problem in that. And vice versa of course. I wouldn't expect a well planted tank that didn't look good to be voted for out of any bias. However the numbers of votes getting made are so low as to question the...

Help - Wanting to upgrade Juwel Bioflow One

The Bioflow comes with 2 sponges in the chamber. Take out filter number 1 and add the ceramics in place of them. I think I'd add them at the top of the chamber so when cleaning time for the sponge comes around, just hold the filter/pump upside down and take the sponge out without disturbing the...

    Polyglutaraldehyde?

I think in a lot of cases the build up this stuff is slow and when a change is made to the water conditions, albeit unknowingly, the reaction time to show any improvement is also long. I had/have it on Amazon Sword. I killed it with a quick bleaching. The sword is magnificent again, however I...

    Driftwood cleaning

That's a bit of wishful thinking. I had a lump of bogwood in my large tank that was absolutly covered in algae, just the normal green stuff, but it also became long enough to stream outwards. Not hair algae though. I tried boiling water. It just died and stayed on the wood where it became a...

    Adding sand to gravel substrate...

I made some bags to put aqua soil in from my wifes old tights. What a shambles. It worked OK but they reverted to being round sauasages, ie leg shaped, and bulged up to push all the gravel off the top. However, if you make a sheet from them I think they'll be fine. The problem is though that...

    What is this larvae?

I did that with a couple of critters I found in bags of daphnia. Sadly they didn't survive but I learned a lesson from it. If it isn't needed squash the damn thing. I spent time attending to their needs than I should have done. I could have used the time better trimming plants or doing water...

    Coral Moss

I bought a supposed bag of Java Moss the other day to place on my new nano tank hardscape. When I opened the bag it certainly wasn't java moss as I've seen it, used it and also found it a bit messy to work with. At the same time I bought Xmas moss which I like for it's ability to grow upwards...

    Adding sand to gravel substrate...

The problem with filter floss is that it tears and makes a mess if it gets disturbed. Sponge with a fine hole size will end up stuffed full of sand too, so you'll lose the ability for under filter development of beneficial bacteria. You need something that will be thin and with a mesh size...

If you look over the site Members Online section you'll see a large number of guests who are just visiting to, I think, search for answers to some of their own problems, or to obtain data for species, plants etc. While we don't hold our hands up with a No Entry sign, can I encourage those people...

    Large leaves= easy to keep.

It's probably something I do wrong but large leaf plants I have, tend to attract Black Beard Algae. My Amazon Swords for instance get strung up with it easily. I dip in bleach solution to kill it and have added CO2 bubbler as I think CO2 also minimises BBA. ------------------------------- HAVE...

    Corydoras and saltwater dip

I treated a tank with salt around 3 or 4 weeks ago. I had suspicions of some sort of fungal disease on a few fish. It didn't harm them, including the panda corys and sterbai and the tank seems to have corrected itself. I did a water test before the salt addition, then after and I was horrified...

HOW MANY: Is there life out there?

I know it's sort of an anomoly but most tanks of a set volume such as a 30 gallon, hold far less water due to substrate, hardscape etc. My own 75 ltr tank only has 58 litres of water. Nevertheless, it's still a 30 gallon tank. Just thinking out loud.

Found Fish in Dorm, unsure of what to do

I have 6 of them in my tank swimming up and down the glass. They are active normally and spend most of the time shuffling over the bits of tank that I leave to grow algae on, such as the back tank glass that isn't seen from the front. They are fragile fish and kept singly won't work. I commend...

    Please help

I did the same sort of thing a couple of times changing to soil, once even with the fish still in the tank as I had nowhere else I could put them. Fish only take the oxygen from the water; they don't eat it. As the water is new in the tank then there's really no reason not to change it out in as...

Was cutting back some of the background plants on my TOTM entry tank this afternoon. The Rotala is now bunching on the surface due to a hell of a lot of growth. Guess what I saw ---- 5 very small fry in among the leaves. I have no idea what they are though as I have Chili and Dwarf Rasboras...
