Tetra whisper 60 filter motor spinning but not pumping water

Hope you have the answer from the previous responses, Lajos. Whatever, I'm grateful you posted the problem as I was looking at the Tetra model myself for a new tank. I haven't made my mind up right now though. I just sort of dislike the bulk of hang on the back filters. I want my tanks to look...

    I'M NEW TO THIS.

I'd say the slime is probably biofilm. It's indicative of water with a high nutrient level but generally not a problem to fish. In fact it's a food source to some fish and shrimp. It can look messy and disgusting though so prevention is by doing daily water changes of perhaps 40% until it...

    GH help?? Maybe.

I was at 460ish GH from my own tap supply. That sort of explained why I lost a good number of fish in my early learning period. I now have 7 tanks, each of which is set up for fish with the same water parameter requirements. I get to the intended GH/HK and pH by using a mix of tapwater, bottled...

    Hi! I’m new here!

You can just crack on with it right away. Voting for this month's contest ends on Saturday. My own aquascaped tank is among the entries. I too must say that the photo's you took are really good. Most of my own stills tend to be blurs as fish swim past. However, as my main tank (the TOTM entry)...

    Getting a 10 gallon. Fish/plant ideas?

10 US gallons is 38ltrs. Take from that the space taken by substrate and any hardscape and you're likely to be around 25 - 30lts water volume. Of course the water parameters are important, not only for the plants but the fish too. However I don't think you'll make much of a mistake just going...

Wet or dry? Best way to grow.

I'm in the beginnings of setting up my new Waterboy Mini 6. I have the hardscape stuff and the plants ready and I want some really fast growth so that I can get the tank up and running. The plants I'm going for are Pearl Weed in one corner that's raised to about 2 thirds height of the tank, then...

How do I go about vacuuming the substrate in my fry tank?

I look at this from two angles. 1st depends on how small the fry are. I use a regular siphon hose that has good sucking power but hold a net under it to prevent accidental loss, but only if the fish are large enough to be unable to go through the net. 2nd option is to do the same thing in...

Water lettuce and bugs, or at least flies.

Did a lot of searching last night for water lettuce+bugs and found the answer. Apparently they are aphids. They seem to be associated only with water lettuce though as they haven't invaded anywhere else. Must have come with the plant itself. Now all I have to do is find out how to rid myself of...

Treating a tank for parasites and worms

Can't see any problem with that as long as you always have the recommended dose in the water.

Water lettuce and bugs, or at least flies.

I bought a large water lettuce around 5 weeks ago and it has split several times so I've moved some offsrping to other tanks. I must say they are amazing for the likes of Chili rasboras etc to swim among the roots. BUT ---- and I remember when I had them previously, I sort of became aware of...

Any hope for my nomaphila stricta?

If you are concerned with the looks of it, I'd get rid of it. Otherwise if you take it out and put in another container/tank, it should grow back. I don't keep cichlids myself, and reading so much about them chewing their way through all your efforts to make a nice tank, I'll stick with nano fish.

    Growing green algae.

I believe blue is best, however it'll still appear in most sort of light. You'll have to walk a fine line so as not to encourage black beard algae or hair algae. I think it's more to do with nutrient control than most other things.

Well done NT Labs: They seem to have taken the hint

For those who have been watching some of my other posts, it might have come to your attention that I have had a fair bit of griping about NT Labs GH test bottle inequality. For those who haven't picked up on the subject yet, basically to do a GH test you need to add 5ml of water into a tube...

Throw some light onto my ignorance

I'm sitting scratching my head on this one guys 'n gals. I have a new nano tank I'm putting together and am struggling to make sense of the lighting requirements. The tank is a Waterbox Clear Mini 6 and I would prefer a clip on light that can be placed on a long side rather than an end, with the...

Slight gaps between tank and stand

Can't see a problem with that. Once the tank is filled, the weight of it will press down on the cabinet more in the middle and straighten it up. The cabinet sides are better supported so they won't sink down, only the middle.

Got some brine shrimp to test out...

The frozen stuff I buy, I leave in a small container in a couple of ml's of tank water to unfreeze, then I squirt some into the tanks so that they are floating around the tank. I found that once they sink, they stink, unless you have bottom feeders to snap them up. I much prefer using vinegar...

Proud Parent of Cherry Shrimp & ADFs

Hi to you in Portland, USA, from Peterlee, UK. 2 funny stories ......... I bought a couple of vampire crabs for my tank and my 4 year old grand-daughter loved them. In fact when she went to nursery she told all her classmates and teachers that her grandad has crabs. Then, this is a bit sad...

    Aquascaper 600

Hey Wills, that tank is magnificent. I have green neon tetras and they are lovely when shoaling together. They are all alone as community fish right now, though I do have otos, a pair of Scarlett Badis and a couple of Panda Cory none of which that really interact with the neons. One of my other...

    Lead weights

When I go sea fishing I invariably lose half a dozen 6oz lead weights. So I was devastated to see so many marine creature deaths locally. I put it down to the huge amount of lead I've thrown into the sea. BEWARE.

    Looking for specific fish

I suggest you do a search for wholesale houses and see if they have any. They may not sell directly, though some will, but if they have what you want ask them who in your vicinity buys from them so you can ask them to place an order.

    A Christmas (moss) Story.

You can use it as something to plant sort of dangling into the water but not totally submerged. I tried it a few years back when I was too tight penniless to buy java moss. It just made a mess of things. I have a stream running about 50mtrs away with the banks covered in moss but none of it has...

Baby tears: tearing my hair out

I've been sitting in front of the tank for an hour or so just watching the fish while listening to the Jubilee Concert. The Golden Tetra threw a surprise on me. For some reason the room has had a small number of very small flies over the tanks, less than a mm in size, perhaps laying eggs or...

    Jumping to conclusions?

Ah, CO2? Not in the Endler tank. However it's in my TOTM entry and another aquascaped tank but the CO2 is turned off late afternoon and started again early morning. I also have a CO2 checker which is always at green. However, it's something I'll take note of and will keep it off for a week to...

    Jumping to conclusions?

It could be the mortalities are down to newish fish though most have been with me a few weeks now. I'm stuck with the GH right now though as I'm out of bottle no2 in the GH test kit. I won't be buying any more from NT Labs though as I think they are damn inconsiderate. The GH test has to be done...

    Jumping to conclusions?

For the last few weeks I have suffered occasional losses of Chili Rasboras and CPD's. From time to time I have found a floater and despite the water showing nil on Ammonia, Nitrites and Nitrates, and also with frequent water changes they still go to fish heaven one by one. There's no mass...

    What makes you special?

Without looking to present myself as anything other than an ordinary guy I have a tendancy to be hugely empathetic without actually showing it. Have I made a Mistake? Time to change over

Well I just found some flat small heaters. I have 2 on the way as I want to try them on different tanks. The first is one that I intend to replace my usual round normal type heater in my aquascaped tank. It's a Sunsun and I already have their external canister filters that are great so I can...

Have I made a Mistake? Time to change over

Thanks Wills. I haven't got the room for an external filter so anything else may be considered. I think perhpas a H.O.B. may be one way to solve the problem however it needs to be slim and preferably as inobtrusive as possible. It's a pity that there isn't a sort of H.O.B. that works the same...

The fish are doing great. The Green Neons are amazingly active and flash past in a tight shoal from one side to the other. Have I made a Mistake? Time to change over

Have just got back from another tank purchase session. I didn't really go for a new one but ....... temptation crept up behind me and kicked me in the brain. Is this fry fat, or does it have worms?

I've never seen oto's that got fat. Even in tanks that have a tremendous amount of algae they always appear to be slim(ish) and lively. I know it sounds repulsive but if you could lift out one of the poops you should be able to see if it simply squashes or has a harder feel to it indicating a...

I Give In : Snails for me

The tank in question here is one where I had a massive infestation several weeks ago. I mean MASSIVE. I Give In : Snails for me

I am infested with bladder snails in a couple of tanks still and have lately put Assassins in to assist. However I feel that I need some snails to browse on the biofilm and algae.
