Rare Fish's Rare Fish of the Day!

Many thanks for your answer Monsieur 🙂 I know I have hard water and a high pH and (now) select fish accordingly. I have a Betta that I buy RO water for!!

Rare Fish's Rare Fish of the Day!

Please can you explain why you think this..? I’ve got the Nitrogen Cycle now, but am still struggling with pH/acidity/alkaline…it’s just not staying put in my head 🤔😡

You’re very welcome 🙂 I know I know the answer to this type of question 🙂

A short clip of Corydoras habitat.

But if the fish hadn’t been wild caught years ago, we wouldn’t have the range we do now. Why shouldn’t the newer generations of fish keepers have something new to become ‘experts’ on..? I’m certainly out of my depth for any form of discussion based on fact or research, but with an opinion that...

My very modest collection of tanks.

@MonsieurLaGrenuoille - please tell me what is that in the second photograph..?

A short clip of Corydoras habitat.

I’m not looking for an argument, but I’m interested in how and where you got you original stock for the different types of fish you either have bred, or are still breeding? You report a long breeding history, so is there a chance that your original fish would have been wild caught..?

A short clip of Corydoras habitat.

There are several species of birds, animals and plants that have been saved from extinction by carefully planned captive breeding programs (peregrine falcons a sea otters) spring to mind… Collecting animals to attach to a piece of card with a bead topped pin is another matter altogether…

Question and my journey from a new comer

I like a more natural looking tank, but this is still attractive - and I expect the children love the colours and movement 🙂 I think all tanks are a constant journey to “Perfection”…whatever that might look like 🙂

Question and my journey from a new comer

Lots of us become ‘experts’ while trying to sort out a muddle caused by poor research, or not even knowing what we should try and research! I’ve just had a really quick look, but I’m not sure I understand enough about anaerobic to make a comment…someone else will come along and answer that one...

    Its contagious!!!

@realzalio - I’m a hundred years away from even considering trying to keep seahorses…this silliness started in the thread ‘fish you’d like to have..?’ Something like that 🙂. I’ve mastered Bettas and guppies, my next ”victims” are going to be dwarf neons and platies… then technically I’m out of...

Question and my journey from a new comer

I’m not certain that that is how the Nitrogen cycle works…. My understanding is that you grow one set of bacteria to break down the Ammonia and the result of that action is Nitrites. A second set of bacteria break down the Nitrites to give Nitrate and that is removed by water changes and some...

Question and my journey from a new comer

@Angrybeaver Have you got any live plants in the aquarium..?

    Its contagious!!!

Now you are really adding fuel to the fire!! 😂 60 ltrs is about 15 gallons and according to Seahorse Savvy… “We recommend having an aquarium in the 3-10 gallon range. 10 gallons would be recommend for very large herds of dwarf seahorses. With such a small aquarium size large water changes will...

How much difference does size make..?

Never on the naughty list 😂 I’m in a first floor flat but have concrete floors so I’m not expecting the weight to be an issue from that respect, but I will be getting the tank on the purpose built stand (my diy skills are shocking 😀). I knew I’d get the ”bigger” answer I wanted on here 😂😂😂

    What Fish Surprised You?

That is such exciting news…that’s what I’ve got planned for my new tank, but the fish in the unplanted tank don’t look that exciting, so I’m hoping they will look like the photos on the internet when they are settled in a planted tank 🙂

How much difference does size make..?

The 125 ltr has dimensions of 80 x 35 x 50 cms ( I think this includes the lid otherwise the capacity is wrong) and the 200 ltr 100 x 40 x 55 (again including the lid). I’m going to stock with Dwarf Neon Rainbows and Platies 🙂

    @Colin_T really…? I’m trying to have a sensible conversation 🤣🤣🤣

How much difference does size make..?

I know what fish I want, another thread has helped me narrow that down, but I will be able to have more of them. Just worrying about the water maintenance really - it’s a lot more than I have at the moment 🙂

How much difference does size make..?

No chance of having a tank that size in my flat 😢

How much difference does size make..?

Since your first reply I’ve been on YouTube! I’m not sure that a Python would work for me as I don’t have a mixer tap, but two separate taps (hot and cold water). I’ve seen several videos with users using a small submersible pump and a bucket…is the theory the same..?

How much difference does size make..?

I‘ve been back at the lfs again this afternoon looking at my ‘new’ tank…Fluval Roma 125 ltr and working out how many sleeps until Christmas… Then I realised that there was a Fluval Roma 200 ltr for about £60 more (almost double the water capacity). But, am I running before I can walk..? I...

One fish you really want but you dont have.

@OliveFish05 - don’t go encouraging me with this…from a tiny bit of reading they need very specialist care - and I’m certainly not at that level yet 😂😂

    Position of pump in 20L

😳 it’s very early on a Sunday… the mix of l (litres) and gallon did confuse me… but it doesn’t take much these days 😂

  33. NannaLou

    Position of pump in 20L

Can I just check the tank capacity..? The new tank is 20 litres..? Not 20 gallons..? That’s smaller than the tank I keep a single Betta in, and that filter sounds too much for that amount of water. I have an Eheim Pickup 45 (brilliant filter) and that circulates 50ltrs an hour (5 x your water...

    Guppy started dying overnight…

I started this mix of water having killed two beautiful Betta fish by not knowing anything about cycling or the fact they needed softer water. So the extra “faff” in water changes is my fault entirely ☹️. I have a tank that has about 24 ltrs of water and I change 10 ltrs each week. I have a 10...

    Hello! And pleco help?

I think the more polite way to start finding out what the issues might be would be to ask what your water parameters are? Hard/soft (readings in numbers), acidity, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels? I‘m not experienced enough to look at a list of fish and say they don’t match, but I do know...

    Guppy started dying overnight…

I use a mix of 50% tap water (I’m working with 16d of hardness) and 50% RO water that I buy from my lfs.
  38. NannaLou

    Guppy started dying overnight…

Apart from the fact that Betta fish should be kept on their own, you have nitrites in the tank and should be doing water changes to reduced them to zero. Also, Betta fish need much softer water than guppies so aren’t compatible on for many reasons.
