Yes, I tend to lean towards helping a betta, rather than buying them online and such.

I wouldn't think that they would have problems later in their life. I mean, I rescued a betta that was pretty much dead, and he's my most active one today. When I first got him, I treated him for external parasites, and I caught him just in time. Really, the only way they would have a problem...

I wouldn't say internal parasites. I've had tons of fish with those, and they have really tell tale symptoms - ie. skinniness, stringy white/clear poo, and in the cases of livebearers - they don't have fry anymore. Your best bet is to get a medicated food, if you suspect that it is internal...
