    Techs Fluval Edge Journal

I love the rocks too. I've not seen anything like them for sale here locally. They really do look like giant rocks seen from afar. That's terrific.

I like the rocks too. That's why I asked about them. They look nearly perfect, the kind of rock you always try to find but can't.

Is that a shrimp I see flashing across the front of the tank? Also, are those rocks natural or man-made?

Please Help All My Fish Died!

Unfortunately, the idea that keeping fish is quick and easy is a myth we in the hobby work hard to dispel.    A good place to start is to learn about the nitrogen cycle, something essential for life in the aquarium. You'll find details of it...

    New Again

A mag 7 is 700 GPH, then you have Koralia pumps. That's quite a bit of flow right there. Just based on head loss I would say the mag 9 would likely be better though.

    New Again

    1) Is the mag12 too much pump? I figure it will turn about 800 gallons an hour at 5' head ( there are no elbows from pump to return except of course the elbow at the actual return.   Well...to me the Mag12 is a lot of pump for a 90 but that does depend on what's in it. Same with the Koralia...

Hi All. I Need Some Advice From Experienced Fishologists.

Even though the tank may seem large to you it's actually much too small for an oscar. You're looking at more like 250 liters for that fish to have a nice healthy life. There are many ways to rehome a fish that work well. You can find someone locally to trade with, a shop that gives store credit...

3.5Ft Custom Tank Is Not Empty.......

Nice start and the fish are lovely.

Hi All. I Need Some Advice From Experienced Fishologists.

That is correct. Even in captivity they quickly grow to a foot or more in length. They will continue to grow more slowly after reaching this size. They are also large bodied fish in terms of weight.  I feel a tank of at least 70 gallons and 4 feet in length is appropriate for this particular...

    Natural Looking Pvc Cave

    I Think I Need Help

It does look like diatoms to me. Algae and other growth is common in the first few months of a tank's life. They all go through a period I call the uglies.

    Site Back Up And Ouch!

So, you all noticed the site was down. It was a pretty substantial server crash.    The OUCH! part is that it was so bad that it couldn't be fixed and the site had to be restored from a back up copy which means...sadly indeed...that some posts and data were lost. Fortunately the site is backed...

That's good advice. If they had they likely would not have purchased this fish at all, or any knife for that matter.

Im A Newbie In Need Of Serious Help

Side laying, and generally laying about, is normal for these fish. They spend a great deal of time like in the below picture from Google. Don't expect too much daytime activity out of it.   I suppose it's due to the nature of their skin they don't really seem to like being in rocks, perhaps too...

Im A Newbie In Need Of Serious Help

Okay, for some reason I thought you had other knifefish in the tank.  Side sleeping/laying is actually a normal behavior for knifefish.    Do you have a hiding tube for him?
  23. Chad

Im A Newbie In Need Of Serious Help

There are likely four reasons it's not eating.   1. Tank mates (other electric fish of different species interfere) 2. Substrate (they use that nose to get into mud and remove prey) 3. Food type (electric fish use their electricity to hunt. If the food is dead it's less likely to detect it and...

Im A Newbie In Need Of Serious Help

No, not much. Hopefully someone will have researched them. I know only basics like size (16"), habitat (South American river basins) and diet (usually water-based insects and larvae) and they are "electric" (used to communicate and detect prey) but I haven't kept them so don't know much beyond...

Im A Newbie In Need Of Serious Help

I believe this is Peter's Elephantnose which looks like a knifefish but isn't really. Though they do share similarities, which actually might be part of the problem.    One of the problems you may run into is the electroreception of the fish vs that of your other fish. Both this fish and the...

    How I'm Building My Refugium.

A good way to do it in a sump is to make sure it's placed so water can circulate all around it well. Since aesthetics don't matter in the sump it's function that's important. It's a nice looking set up. With that much rock in the sump you will be able to keep the display nice and clean looking.

Increasing Flow With A Powerhead - Best Positioning?

Since you just put it there I think you should observe it for a few days and see how things go. If you don't like the result then move it down and point it up.

Can you post a photo of where it currently is?

Increasing Flow With A Powerhead - Best Positioning?

I really does kind of depend on a number of factors. Size of tank, GPH of the powerhead, and what fish are in the tank. I have found with fish like tetra they seem to do well if the flow goes from end to end but with molly I find they do better with a back to front flow. With swords and vallis I...

Is Something Wrong With The Site?

I understand. For me, at this point, I realize my online footprint is too large for me to really cover it now. I've got a web site, YouTube channel, admin on three forums, and more. I'm doomed.
  35. Chad

    Book Review?

That section is for actual reviews. A place to let people know what hobby related books are worth reading.

Is Something Wrong With The Site?

I switched from IE to Chrome after the MS did an update a while back. I couldn't do what I needed to do anymore with some of my web sites. Chrome seems to be the most compatible of the browsers I've tried (which is all of them except Safari).

”The Road To The World’S Largest Nature Aquarium” First Shot: Digest

I just thought I'd share this in case you haven't seen it. The great thing about Takashi Amano's work is that the concepts are scalable. So though I may never had a tank that large, I can replicate the design ideas found here in any tank I have.    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmQ3hTKajOA

    Book Review?

Is this under the review section or somewhere else? The review section is for reviews of products that people have actually used. If someone had a link to a book they either didn't read, or didn't want to review, they would make a post in another area about that.

It's odd that you haven't been seeing it. LOL!  That icon when grayed out means you have read that forum, that icon colored in means there are new posts you have not seen in that forum.  So in the screen shot above you can see some forums have unread and some don't.    Using tablets, phones...
