    Depressed about 55gal =(

If you want to get rid of the tannins and get back to clearer water, put some carbon in your filter and keep changing it regularly. Eventually it'll take out all the tannins. BettaMomma: Looks good, but I have one concern. Mondo Grass isn't an aquatic plant. It can survive submerged for a...

Would play sand not be the same as

Well first off, it's New Jersey. That explains a lot ;) As for buying vs. free.... a bag of play sand is what, $5 for 50 lbs? Fork out the money for it man... that's cheap. Just wait till you do saltwater and have to pay the price for real aragonite sand, then you can complain about the...

Anybody have a couch I can use for a few nights?

Well today one of my co-workers called me while she was out at someone's house dropping something off. The guy was selling a 40g tank, stand, canopy, HOB filter, undergravel filter, powerheads, etc.... EVERYTHING. He wanted $90 for it all, and while I didn't really care about all the...

    Best system for no noise?

I'll chime in to agree with what was said already. HOB filters cause splashing, and that's most of your noise right there. I have a Fluval 204 on a small tank, and it is absolutely silent. Sometimes I even worry about whether or not it's running until I see the Xenia swaying in the current :)

    Equipment Costs

Some people have said that PetCo and PetSmart will match their online prices, but I kinda doubt it. Even online it says that prices may not match the stores. I don't know about the Petsmart down on South... but the one in Gastonia is ridiculous for filters. You're better off ordering it...

    Filter for New Tank

Yeah yeah, we've ALL said that before ;) I never found much info about the Emperor vs. Penguin products either. I bought a Penguin 330 for my 55g. Everything you hear is right... after a while the wheels just kinda stop working and you have to mess with them to get them going again. They...

    Cories hatched today... what now?

Right now I have a pack of Hikari First Bites: http://www.bigalsonline.com/catalog/produc...id1=2911;pcid2= and a tube of Wardley Small Fry http://www.petfish.net/reviews/Wardleys_Liquid_Fry_Food.htm I'm gonna ask at the fish store tonight and see if he has any other type of food for fry...

    Cories hatched today... what now?

Alright, I looked at the other thread, and your first post in it is almost exactly what I've done.... with the exception of the box filter. I started off with just an airstone putting out a LOT of air (air pump was designed for 55g... in a 5g aquarium). After they hatched I put in that box...

    My New "Rescued" Bettas

My old camera should be around there somewhere... the Canon S200. Take some pictures of them to post up here. I'm supposed to come over there this weekend to help setup the new tank, so I'll bring my laptop or a card reader to get the pics off if you can't get them downloaded.

    Cories hatched today... what now?

The cories are actually Emerald Brochis. Well, there are 4 emeralds, and one albino cory. The main tank that they're in is sand, this holding tank is bare bottom. It was set up VERY hastily... no time to do much else to it. As for the filter, I'm afraid to run a power filter with them, so I...

    Cories hatched today... what now?

Sunday my Cories laid eggs in my main tank. I got as many as I could out being VERY careful with them, and moved them to a 5g tank for holding. Well, today they started hatching. I still see a few eggs that look intact, and there are about 20-25 little cories that I've seen swimming around on...

    Wife's betta died...

Sounds like Chronic Dropsy. He grew a couple of tumors long before he started swelling up. In the last 2 days his scales pineconed out and then he was a goner. I'll tear down the tank tonight and give it a good cleaning before we add another fish. Is it safe to fill the tank back up, add...

    Wife's betta died...

Yesterday when I got home, I saw what I've known for days was inevitable. The wife's betta was lying in the bottom of the tank dead. For a few days now, it has been bloated and its scales pineconed out..... dropsy, right? So last night we buried him (wife would NOT flush him).... and this...

    Red Bubble Algae

Not even really necessary any more. There are so many places that will develop film and give you a CD with your pictures too.... a scanner isn't one of the required components to use film. Since I can't afford a Digital SLR, I too had thought about a decent Canon 35mmSLR for $150... or even...

Help... marine tank without power for hours

Well everything seems to have returned to normal now. The Xenia are back open, the zoanthids are mostly open, the shrimp is out, the snails are active. The only thing I've noticed.... or rather, haven't noticed, is a little red duster worm that was in a piece of LR. It only stuck out about...

Help... marine tank without power for hours

I got home today to find the light on my little mini-bow 5 marine tank off. I thought it was odd and perhaps the cheap mechanical timer had missed turning on, so I went over to check it. The power strip it was on was turned off. That power strip has the heater, lights, and filter/water...

Saving of a Yellow Tailed Blue Damsel

With the trouble my blue damsel has been giving me lately, I'm almost tempted to say you should have left the thing there :P Okay... maybe not.... but DO be careful now that it's in your tank. Damsels are not known for being particularly friendly fish, and lately my blue damsel has become a...

    Horseshoe crab?

They have some at Ripley's Aquarium in Myrtle Beach, SC... probably have some at the SC Aquarium in Charleston too. Seeing one up close like that gives you an idea of just how big they are, especially with that tail.

    Stupid pet tricks

Wednesday while at the pet store, I picked up a copy of an aquarium magazine that had an article about peppermint shrimp. I always thought it was fascinating that my peppermint shrimp would sit and sway back and forth anytime he was out in the open. After reading it, the article said that...

    TetraTec PF300

What size tank is it on? I still think you should do like what I posted and get an Aquaclear 500 and glue in a baffle to make a refugium. AC filters are pretty cheap, and BIG!!!!! I think an AC500 is somewhere around $30-40 depending on where you shop.

    Crab on LR

    Zoanthid oddity

I know what Zooanthellae is.... just didn't know that was the form it took, I guess. Or the color, really. As for whether it's good or not..... it came shortly after feeding some phytoplankton and zooplankton, which the polyps seemed to eat. Maybe they were just full. They look better now...

    The Bird

That's nice to know finally :) There were other birds there that I had never seen before.... not slick like seagulls normally are, but very puffy feathers. Some had webbed feet, some had long toes, but other than that looked like..... and all were greedy little birdies chasing sand fleas at...

    TetraTec PF300

I'm not entirely sure what a "PF300" is. If you're just talking about a normal Aquaclear 300 hang on back power filter.... it's easy to make a refugium out of. Lots of people on another site do it and talk about how wonderful it is. Most of them, however, use the bigger AC500 and change out...

    Yahoo Games Bookworms

Last night I was playing Bookworm, and I found something odd in there. This one's for you Navarre ;) For anyone who hasn't played the game... http://games.yahoo.com/games/downloads/bw.html WARNING! This game is almost as addictive as bejeweled. Play at your own risk! ;)

    Zoanthid oddity

Okay, last night I noticed one of my new purple zoanthids "spitting" out some type of stringy stuff. The strand was about 2-3 inches long, and once it was out... it looked just fine. Today I've found three more of those strings stuck to a rock, the filter outlet, and the thermometer. What are...

    Post your Car!

I find it funny that there's a company out there that sells body kits that make the lights on a Lexus IS300 look "normal"..... and at the same time there are TONS of companies that sell taillights to make other cars look like the IS300 :) Phunky: You could get those pieces to go on the back...

    New tank help

Yeah.... only tip on the anemone.... leave it in the ocean. I don't agree with keeping anemones in aquariums because there's such a low survival rate for them, and even 15 years for an anemone is a blink of an eye in their lifespan. It would be like keeping a person locked in a room and when...

    New tank help

In short.... here we go: Sand... you need aragonite/calcite sand to buffer the water and keep the pH up around 8.3 where it should be. Oolitic sand or crushed coral or any size in between is up to you..... but make sure you get aragonite or calcite based sand, not play sand from Lowes...

Set up a mini-bow 5 nano last night

Well, I've added more stuff today and did some rearranging. I stopped by the fish store again, and saw two little bitty rocks with zoanthids on them.... one fairly good sized rock with purple zoanthids, and a itsy bitsy teeny weeny rock with GORGEOUS orange-tipped zoanthids. Then when I got...

Are you positive he's dead.... or did he molt? I remember when I first added my hermit crabs, I had 15 of them. Two days later, I found 2 "dead" ones. Then... the next day.... 2 more. After freaking out about them dying off so quick, I started counting.... and I still had 15 left. They just...
