    Poorly Cory?

Akasha, could this have anything to do with the phosphate issue you have posted about before? Maybe if your little guy is old (as Rainbow suggested) or a little stressed the phosphates may affect him more than the others?   I have no idea, this is just a guess. I hope he pulls through.

    Cichlid-Proof Plants?

Depending on which type of Africans you are looking at, their natural habitat has very few (if any) live plants in it.   For example, mbunas from Lake Malawi mostly around the huge rock formations that are there. If you look at these guys in their natural environment, there are no plants there -...

    Cichlid-Proof Plants?

Vallisnera loves hard water which is compatible with Africans.   The biggest problem is that Africans are diggers and they go to amazing lengths in landscaping their own environments. Another issue is that Africans also require a really high flow rate which lots of plants don't really...

Help With My Cichlids And Featherfin Catfish:)

I have an African cichlid tank, with a featherfin catfish as well. I would consider cichlids to be more territorial than outright aggressive other than specific cichlids such as the bumblebee cichlid who are notorious bullies. Most will live happily with others provided that there are sufficient...

    Thinking About ...

Akasha, have you considered a group of rummy nose tetras or something like zebra danios? I have groups of both of these in my tank and they are peaceful, active shoaling fish. The danios stay near the top but the rummy nose move to different levels, however both are always in their group.   They...

New To Aquariums - Doing Research

In terms of tank dimensions, the bigger the footprint of the tank, the better. 'Longer and wider' is better for fish than 'skinny and tall' as there is a larger surface area of water, even though they may hold the same volume of water. Maximising your surface area is what you want to do for the...

    Antibiotics In Australia

I just did a quick google search for exotic animal vets in Melbourne. Not sure if these are anywhere near you, but they may help:   www.warranwoodvet.com.au   www.lortsmith.com   www.kvh.com.au   www.canterburyvet.com.au   www.u-vet.com.au   hopefully these guys can help you out.

    Antibiotics In Australia

I am in Sydney - as far as I know, any antibiotic requires a prescription. You're better off finding an exotic animal/fish vet who can advise you on specifics rather than just buying something over the counter and hoping for the best.

    Tank Scaping So Far.

Have you considered painting the outside of the back panel of your tank? Dark colours really make the fish stand out and also helps to disguise some of the filter outlets etc. I used matte black chalkboard paint on my tanks and the result was great! Really easy to do as well.

Easy Carbo, Stag Horn And Bba!

I have to agree with all the positive comments regarding SAE's. They are superheroes in my opinion and should come wearing capes! :) If you can track them down and your tank is big enough, they are a great addition. Very peaceful in my experience, and as Akasha said, also pretty lazy so they...

    Diet For A Community Tank

Hi Neophyte,   I have two big tanks at home. I feed all of my fish New Life Spectrum. In my planted tank I have neon tetras as well as a lot of other fish, so these guys get 'NLS small fish formula', so its easy for them to eat. You can also get 'NLS community fish' (as well as many other...

    The Banana Plant

Hi RainboW, I have a banana lily in my tank. I don't add any CO2 or anything other than a multipurpose fertiliser once a week when I do my water change. Its doing well along side my amazon swords! I'm sure other people know more than me but mine has been pretty low maintenance and seems quire happy.

    Worried About Weight Of Tank

Always better to be safe than sorry Clive, that would be a huge disaster and potentially really dangerous if someone was around in the wrong place at the wrong time. Do you have space for the big tank on the ground level?

    Rainbow Shark Colour Change

Hi everyone, I have a very healthy rainbow shark in one of my tanks, where he is the only shark. He is very active and displays normal behaviour. There are plenty of places for him to hide amongst driftwood, rocks and caves as well as lots of plants.   My water parameters are all good and I do a...

    Ropey Amazon Swords

Hey Akasha, sorry to jump in on this thread but I have a question for you.   How do you rate the easylife profito? Is it a good allrounder on its own or do you rely on the easycarbo as well? The profito was recommended to me as something that would work well with nothing else required.

    Dilemma

Regardless of the cause of death of the original two, the four remainders will get stressed in as their numbers start to dwindle. Neons need a heavily planted tank to feel safe, with gentle filtration.   As Byron suggested, you need to find out the reason why things went wrong in the first...

    Super Angry

I used to volunteer at my local animal shelter (RSPCA), taking care of dogs and puppies. It was really common for parents to bring their kids in and assume it was ok to let their kids run around the shelter like it was a theme park and free entertainment. The kids would run, scream and bang on...

    New Filter?

I don't have any experience with bettas but I do have a fluval U4 internal filter. It has 3 options for water movement (top, bottom or an in-built spray bar). I have mine on the spray bar setting and my fish love it, its great. They come in 4 sizes so you can choose the one most appropriate for...

    Aternative For Vallisneria?

Thanks for your advice Byron, you are the guru!   Seeing as everyone/everything is happy in my tank (fish are doing really well and all other plants growing like crazy) if the val dies, so be it. At the end of the day I would rather have a tank of happy, healthy fish rather than messing with the...

    Apple/mystery Snails Vs Clown Loach

    Aternative For Vallisneria?

Hi guys thanks everyone for your input. The val went in about 3 weeks ago, so the fact that they don't like being moved is probably contributing to the problem. I will keep up with my weekly dose of flourish excel and see how they go. My amazon swords, banana lilies etc seem to be on steroids...

    Aternative For Vallisneria?

You might have nailed the problem RainboW, my ph is 6.8 - 7.0 so that might be the issue. The substrate is fine/medium gravel. All of my other plants seem to thrive in that tank so it has to be something that the val specifically isn't too happy about!
