I've used chemical removing mats like charcoal or Renew until resently after hearing that they aren't always needed. I'm thinking of devoting one tray in the smaller of the 2 filters with a chemical removing mat. I'm going to keep the rest of the trays (3) with hard BIO and sponge mats for now...
