Cant say much more on what has already been said but if I was you I would sort out the snails if they are getting out of control before adding fish. Maybe a total clearout of the tank or add anti snail treatment but I think some of these are not so good for fish.

As above can you estimate how much money do you think you have spent on your fish since starting? Include all equipment, tanks, meds, food, fish. Its pretty easy for me since Ive only just started. £450 plus about £20-£25 a month I think on Electric.

I have silica sand, washed it the best i could slowly put it in my tank a litre at a time the tank did go cloudy but only for 12 hours. Sand is great my cories have made a trench round each of my moss balls it looks pretty good.
