I want to switch up my stocking, but not sure what's best.

I haven't gotten the new fish yet. I'll post pics when I get them though!

I want to switch up my stocking, but not sure what's best.

I've been meaning to update, but I kept forgetting. :X I decided to keep both of the schools and just add to them as much as I can. I think that's better than taking them out of the tank, driving them all the way to my LFS (over an hour away), and then they might get bought by someone who has no...

    Argh! Fish nightmare

Bug Bites tropical formula is good. New Life Spectrum, Omega One, and Hikari are good brands too. I would get the pellets since that's better for the fish. You could also give them some frozen food like bloodworms, daphnia, or brineshrimp.

    Need action

I don't know how much of a difference 40 ppm makes, but seriously fish says that the maximum hardness for cherry barbs is 357ppm. "Hardness: 36 – 357 ppm. Wild fish will probably do best towards the lower end of this range." You should not put fish into water that is just barely within or...

I purchased an injured Cherry Barb

I don't think she has a disease. It looks more like her side may have gotten scraped by the net. Bringing her back to the store might just kill her, and I don't think it's necessary. I would just keep the water clean and see if she heals. Make sure she's eating and swimming with the other fish...

You say you have hard water? Can you give your exact parameters? Tetras and barbs are both softwater fish.

    Betta turning clear?

Oh, wow. I didn't even see that cory until you mentioned it. I agree though, cories need a much bigger tank, and they need to be in a school.

    Betta turning clear?

Do you have any pictures of what he looked like before? I think he's just marbling. He's a koi betta, and they do that quite often. Here is a really good video that explains marbling in bettas:

    Newbie betta questions

The only way to really tell how much flow is too much, is to get the betta and see how he reacts. If you notice him struggling to swim, then you have to put something in to stop the flow (like sponge). You said that you're using just some regular sponge in the filter, right? Maybe you could try...

    Newbie betta questions

If you want to grow plants, you will need to get a light. Nicrew lights are pretty cheap, but they grow plants really well. The color and gender will not change how you care for your betta. What do you mean by non crown tail betta? There are lots of different tail types including plakat...

    Newbie betta questions

    1) 5 gallons is fine for a betta. 2) A 50 watt heater is best. I use the Zacro heater in my betta tank, and it works great. You will need a lid on the tank. Not only will this help with the evaporation, but bettas are also great jumpers. 3) Sponge filters are best, but as long as it doesn't have...

    Looking for Algae Eater

I would get some more live plants. You could put in some floating plants like salvinia or frogbit. You could also add a few nerite snails. They don't breed in freshwater, so they wouldn't overpopulate your tank.

    Fish tank will be overcrowded?

Well, you have learned the most important rule in fish keeping. Never listen to the people at your lfs. It will always get you into trouble. All the fish you have, except for the betta, are not suitable for your tank. I would return all of them to the store, and just keep the betta on his own...

    Share your bettas

Don't mess with your ph. It will just cause problems for you. The hardness of your water is more important. 300ppm is too hard for your bettas. As the others have said, you can use RO water to bring down the hardness.
  30. FishFinatic77

    Share your bettas

Do you know exactly how hard your water is? If you put a soft water fish into hard water, you won't notice any problems at first. The fish will look completely normal and healthy. But, internally, the calcium in the water is building up in the intestines, and slowly killing the fish. Soft water...

    Help Please!!!

There is no way those are bristlenose plecos. They're massive. Can you take closer pictures of them? It's good that there's no ammonia. Have you done a big water change to get rid of the nitrates yet?
  34. FishFinatic77

    Help Please!!!

Cories will need more space at the bottom as well (and sand, which the tank does not have). Since your water is soft, I would rehome all the livebearers in addition to the fish that are too big for the tank. That will reduce the amount of waste produced by the fish, and your nitrates won't be as...

    Help Please!!!

I'm sorry. :( Can you give us the exact numbers from your test? Also, the strips don't test for ammonia, so you still need to test that. Can you please tell us the GH and KH of your water?
  36. FishFinatic77

    Help Please!!!

Okay, your stocking is definitely going to need some work, but we'll address that later. Since you just added so many new fish yesterday, it could be that you are having an ammonia spike. I need you to test your water. You can bring a water sample to Petco or Petsmart and they will test it for...
