Poor guy, wish I knew the answer. Maybe you could foster him out to a friend or even your LFS who might have a spare tank till you get you problems sorted.

Nearly all the plants in my tanks have come from E-bay. I have generally been very happy with the quality and prices.

Could be some sort of leech. They change shape as they move.

What about a large clump of vallis? It would reach the top then start to curl over along the surface.

The nitrate is certainly high. Did you test your tapwater? its unlikely but it may be coming out of the tap that way.

They will both help speed up the cycle. Rocks and wood will provide more places for bacteria to grow on and plants will help break down ammonia and nitrates.

You could always just buy feeder fish and smash then with a hammer, would save time and you wouldn't have to buy any more fish to rip them to pieces.

Cories often sit at the bottom of the tank, could be your first one is the lively one. Have a look at some videos of cories on youtube and see if its different from how your cories are acting.

Angelfish aren't likely to pick on your corydoras IMO. Same with Rams as they both occupy different parts of the tank. I have 4 largish angels (2 pairs) in with 13 corys and 4 Thomasi cichlids which are a similar size to rams. I see no aggression at all between them.

It could well have been the fact that they were too weak from shipping to avoid being sucked in. Is that a particularly powerful filter? Putting mesh over the intakes would stop fish being sucked up.

I like Lyra's suggestion of Pearl Gouramis, beautiful fish especially if its a planted tank, and of course there are Angelfish

Tie some of them onto a piece of wood or something similar and drape them from the top of the tank. I make my own spawning mops from wool.

If your looking for personality and a fish that will interact with you its probably going to have to be one of the larger cichlids. I've never kept them but some of the small puffers seem to have a lot of personality too.

Would probably have to be 3/8inch thick glass, maybe 1/4inch but I'd be wary of that, anything less I wouldn't bother

What size is it and how thick is the glass? I used to make my own tanks, nothing like 50 gals though, but its easy enough to do and if the glass is thick enough it would probably be worth stripping off the old sealer and resealing it.

I'm thinking the opposite, what makes you think they are a pair? The colouration of the top fish makes me think male, but finnage looks more female. I think the opposite on both counts on the bottom fish.

A school of pygmy chain loaches would be interesting. I'd suggest a pair or trio of an apistogramma species, but I'm not sure about mixing them with your firemouth. This is one of my fav small cichlids (anomalochromis thomasi) http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/441810-fishy-pics/

I'd say the best option is to rehome the gourami. My daughter bought me a pair of opaline gouramis for fathers day...(never buy fish as gifts) They went back to the LFS very quickly. They are not good fish for community tanks unless possibly with bigger fish.
