Caught today a wild Betta smaragdina already flaring and flexing to the female and another male

Can't get a betta angle yet as I don't want to stress him out with light, I will probably do a spawn progression thread soon.

I catch wild betta's and breed them and release their fry to their natural environment as they're rapidly decreasing due to their habitat being dugged out and destroyed for property.

Very nice fish and great to hear that you are working in your own way to preserve the species. Do you release the young back to where you collected the parents or do you spread them around into other suitable water habitats?

i have to say I'm very impressed and jealous

In the past I have returned the young after they're around 1 inch big to their suitable habitats, When I was doing this I released around 50-100 fry every 2-3 moths, I also tried to Introduce them to new locations but betta's are very picky in where they can live as any larger fish such as snakeheads will eat them as food, they also do not like deep water and enjoy being in water around 5-6 inches deep.

The suitable condition for wild betta's require fresh flowing water that seeps from the grown, the stagnant water looks very much like iron bacteria like a slushy water it amazes me how they survive but the water on top is crystal clear.  Sadly for me I can only catch wild smaragdina in my area the other species are spread across Thailand. Hunting betta's is very fun the rarest are spade tails they're like a rare pokemon when you get them :D

Will keep this thread updated if I ever release or have nice pictures :)
