What did you wish you knew about fishkeeping earlier?

I wish I would have known about choosing fish that fit my water parameters. It sure increases my success rate.

I can't get a test kit because my parents said I don't need it!

I use both and I don't find the test strip results all that different from the API liquid tests. The only place I have found much difference is in the KH and GH which are probably the least important part (of what is measured on the strips).

    Cloudy Tank

The plant at the back looks like a Java fern. You have to keep the rhizome above the substrate. If you bury it, you will kill the plant. I think the other is water sprite? I think that is normal for roots to grow from anywhere but I could be wrong. My thinking on the floating plants is...

    Cloudy Tank

I would recommend some floating plants. And when I feed my plants (which isn't often), I only use only half doses.

    Embers question..

I'm in the same boat. I've had a school of 10 Tiger Barbs for about 2 months. In the beginning, they all hung out together but in the last week, one has taken to hiding out by itself up in a corner behind some dwarf lettuce roots. He comes out to eat and sometimes schools with the others but...

My water and what fish I can keep.

I have similar water and went with Tiger Barbs and a Bristlenose Pleco.

    HOB vs Internal Filters

My HOB directs the flow to the front of the tank, not straight down. I also like canister filters although I do not have one at this time. I have 2 all in ones and other came with an HOB which I like more than usual HOBs. It is a Fluval that does not have the usual cartridges. It has media...

    I'm thinking about getting shrimp

You may not need to cover if you get something like Amanos that won't reproduce in fresh water. The more common neocaridina and caridina, you will definitely want to cover the intake.

    I'm thinking about getting shrimp

put lots of moss in and you will need a foam pre-filter to cover the HOB intake.

What fish would you like to eventually keep?

    orange severum

Do pet stores carry such bad stock that you should quarantine?

I personally do not quarantine but fish can carry diseases that might not show immediately and they way they are raised is pretty bad sometimes. Much worst than the way that dogs are raised. Also, shelter dogs are vaccinated against the more common diseases.

    Is my new guppy pregnant?

Doesn't look pregnant to me but if it is in with males it will be.

Good snails to clean the tank but look nice.

I wish MY guppies would eat snail eggs....

    Internal Cannister Filter?

No experience but looking at the Fluval, it looks like a decent filter but it will take up a large amount of tank space. I think I would rather do an external canister.

Good snails to clean the tank but look nice.

You could also put in only one of several different kinds. 1 ramshorn, 1 rabbit, 1 mystery. I have one mystery snail is each of my tanks with nerites. The only snail breeding going on is in one tank that has some bladder snails that I can't get rid of (smashing several daily for months now...

Fluval Spec tank lighting hack (for planted tank)

Looks nice with the light coming from 2 different locations instead of just one. I wish I would have seen this last week. I added a strip to one of my tanks a while ago and got tired of suction cups not sticking and the mounting bracket that pointed the light in the wrong direction. I...

My city water got harder, so driftwood recommendations?

I have an electric distiller. Takes about 4 hours to do a gallon. Then I mix about 1/3 distilled with 2/3 tap water.

    Zebra Nerite questions

I have nerites and mystery snails. The mystery snails are way more active. The nerites will sometimes just sit for long periods of time. They both seem to be more active at night.

Aquarium volume Q's, am I overstocked?

If it was me, I would move one one the plecos to the new tank when you get it. They can get huge.

Pump doesn’t reach bottom of tank

As long as it doesn't suck air, it really doesn't matter how deep it is.

Done! I haven't been here long but I'd say I have certainly gotten less for $12 before.

    superglue

I think I might scrape it all off and try again with thread. I have to order more moss. I am not patient or particularly careful. Lol.

I can’t get my water clear

You should see one of my tanks. So much tannin the back of the tank is hard to see. The piece of wood I have in there is leaching tannins something terrible. I am looking forward to the day mine looks more like yours.
  26. BrianK

    superglue

it was gel but someplaces it worked, some places it stuck to itself but not to the wood, someplaces it stuck to the wood but not to the moss. I think it is anchored to the wood well enough that it will eventually be fine but there are also splotches everywhere. I think it would have been much...

    superglue

okay, tried supergluing some moss for the first time today. I think I will go with thread next time. :p What a mess I made of that. I'm sure the moss will cover it up in a while but it sure looks bad now.

    Honest opinions on my tank?

I like it. Except the fake plants. I am not a fake plant person. I like the background too. I was actually thinking of getting that one and I think this just decided it for me.

    What is the hardiest fish?

I take hardiness as which species can survive in the greatest range of parameters. I would say guppies and plain comet-type goldfish.

    Lead weights

Having just bought some of these a week ago, I can tell you that they are different from the previous "lead" weights I have bought. They are not the same material and I can only assume that the ones I used before had at least some lead in them. I don't think that they are all lead but I am...

Vote Now! - June 2022 Tank of the Month Contest (16 US gallons & smaller)

about 2 months old but most stuff was moved from a Biorb that I decided was junk. Fluval Flex 9, male guppies, amano shrimp, nerite snails. Parameters - GH 7, KH 2, PH 7.8 (down from over 8 out of the tap with seachemacid buffer, nitrate 0, nitrite 0, ammonia somewhere between 0 and .25...
