That is a gibbiceps pleco, they grow to well over a foot long (plant catfish says 450mm/17.7") so yes, your tank is very much to small for it, sorry :/

OP this is how big your fish will get.      Are you able to put them in an extremely large tank? If not you should probably take them back to the fish store and fishless cycle your tank with ammonia. Then get some fish that are more suitable for keeping in aquariums. 

Well then you've taken 50% of your media and this may cause problems with your tank. You can cut the sponge so that you only take part of it.

Let us know what you get for ammonia AND nitrite once you've been able to test.    It would be good to move some of your media into your mom's filter but remember not to remove more than 1/3 of the media from your filter or it may cause your tank to have problems.

Personally, I would set your lights to no more than 8 hours a day. Also, check out TNC Complete and Carbon. It is very cost efficient and is considered to be comparable to the much more expensive Tropica brand. I buy the 1000ml bottles and they last me roughly 6 months on my 340L tank.   ...

Use a photo hosting site like photobucket or flickr. Upload the pictures there and either post the IMG code here (the site gives this to you) or use the little photo icon in the message window on the forum.

Maybe post something in the classified section or try to find a fishkeeping facebook group that is local to you. 

Most plants will actually adapt to almost any light conditions, you're just going to get much slower growth. There are some, more difficult plants which do prefer higher light. What plants are in your tank?   10x turnover isn't really needed, although it is true that some high tech tanks do have...

It's probably a fungus of some kind, you can remove it manually if you want or just leave it and it will likely die off on it's own :)

I doubt the betta would bother the corys. Bettas can be territorial but the corys were there first so they already have dibs :p I would say that the vast majority of bettas are very tolerant of other fish in their tanks but you do get the occasional one that just won't tolerate other fish. I...

It looks like a tank of various malawi to me, plus a parrot, which doesn't really belong in that setup. So yes, minus the parrot that would be fine but you need a high pH and hard water for them.

Jeeze, that's a large variety lol   I just had cryptocoryne wendtii 'tropica', pogostemon helferi and rotala rotundifolia in mine :p The rotala simply would not grow in any of my tanks though - soo frustrating!

I was thinking fish but it would be handy to know your plant list as well if you don't mind. The little 35l I posted above was a SE Asian biotope. I seem to remember that I fudged it a bit on something but can't remember what it was now lol.

Yep it's just stuff that shows up on new wood. You can syphon it out if you like. One thing I thought I'd mention though - you shouldn't boil wood. It causes the fibres to break down and it will rot much quicker and pollute your water. It's probably fine for now as long as it's not spongy/soft...

mmm I think they will - they don't stock any of the tank buster species, the only ones they have in are "rescues" including common plecs, etc.
