How long has your tank been running?  How long have you had your betta?   I can't say I know exactly what the problem is but it does sound like some sort of bacterial infection.  Have you seen any improvements at all from using the antibiotics?... is it possible for you to up his water changes...

I think you are describing the  sort of mineral/salty residue left by the water.  My tanks gets that too.  You can prevent them by wiping everything during water changes.  But once there, it takes a lot of elbow grease to get rid of it.  (I don't always bother cleaning mine away).  I just keep...

I did the first water change since I got Firefly.  I worried he'd find it traumatic but it appeared that a water change was the most interesting and exciting thing happening... he loved every moment of it.   Firefly's fins are continuing to grow in nicely... another photo showing his progress.  

If your nitrate is 0, is your tank cycled?  You should have a reading of something there.   A white film over the eyes or coming off often happens with decomposition... a healthy fish wouldn't have gotten stuck to the filter.

My filter bacteria survived.  We don't have much availability of antibiotics here in the UK so I tried the only one I could get my hands on and it didn't help enough.  I experienced several days of cloudiness and did several daily water changes for something like 4ish days and then the bacteria...

I'd suggest not putting them in with your betta, 1) bettas don't tend to get along with other fish with colorful flowing fins   2) not quarantining means you are risking making your betta sick.

You think he has been nipped too then?  I am quite sure the really short bit is nipped but wasn't too sure if other bits are nipped as well, but I suspected.  All the edges looked nice and clean and there looks like a shadow of clear regrowth starting there.

I found him this afternoon at the LFS.   What kind is he?  He is still small, is he a crowntail?  His fins seems irregular but not and many long ends as in pictures of others online.    

Is he a crowntail?  He doesn't seem quite as jagged as I see in pictures but he definitely has irregular edges.

Yeah, it is a real shame as up until this bout that kept building he was flawlessly healthy.  It was quite a surprise that he started with the repeating illnesses that turned into this.
