I had a very similar issue with guppys myself about a year ago, i posted a topic but i never really got an answer to this issue myself.   What happened in my case though is it spread through out the tank and only seemed to infect females, all males were fine and survived without any issues.  ...

Ive had a few issues with guppys regarding their mouths and i always put it down to way too much inbreeding, it may not be the case here but its possibly a reason.   Id look into cylcing your tank as prairiesunflower has said also as that can, and usually will cause alot of problem for any fish...

I dont think youll get a nice white sand cheap anywhere to be honest :/ its rather specialist, id just do it right and do it once. Itll be cheaper in the long run.

As others have said nothing of real concern, i find it a bit unsightly and removed the wood and ceaned it when i had some  with no ill effects.

I wouldn't throw it ina random pond unless its an ornamental one containing goldifsh koi etc and id seek permission too if you did that.
