Hi.for my new tank I will be using white silica sand.i will be planting some plants in there and was wondering if I could put a layer of plant substrate in before I add the sand.thanks

Yep ya can......my newest scape, i've done just that

I had sand on top of my plant substrate with no issues, although the bag suggested not to do it.

i quess when you do these you will not need to use a vac when doing water changes?

You still use a vac for water changes. You want to hold it a little above the sand and make a swirling motion, this will kick up the poo and the sand should settle back down. :)

If the sand is clear and the tank not fully planted, you will need to vacuum to an extent. If the tank is heavily planted and foreground has a carpeting plant, you really wont need to do much at all
