Why I never suggest keeping fish in a vase

    Lost In Translation

My two cents: I think people in general are way too sensitive at this point in history and it’s largely due to the fact that American culture encourages standing up for your rights and fighting against injustice — it’s just been taken to an unhealthy extreme where no one can say anything without...

    Lost In Translation

I agree with you. I think the danger is that some people get too riled up when discussing sensitive topics and aren’t able to keep it civil. So I think the mods placing restrictions is way of protecting those who aren’t looking to get involved with heated discussions/arguments. They figure many...

    Where are the Hawaiian aquarists?

Yeah it’s just way magnified in Hawaii. For example in most of the US the average single family home does not cost 1.2 million.

    Where are the Hawaiian aquarists?

Koi ponds are popular here, perhaps because of the large Asian population. I actually did build a decent sized pond at a small house I was renting on Kauai, but I eventually had to move to Oahu for job reasons. I miss that pond so much 🥲. It was amazing watching the little ecosystem develop...

    Where are the Hawaiian aquarists?

Unfortunately you're right about the cost of living in Hawaii. It is very expensive out here and real estate is just unreal. It's basically the playground for the richest people from all over the world so little is left for the average man (or woman in this case 😉.) Equally frustrating is how...

Radical (but effective) cure for black algae

I’m thinking of using hydrogen peroxide on some decorations I have that are covered in BBA. Does anyone have experience with this method? Is it ok to just rinse well afterwards and return to tank?

Fish turning black / blind (saltwater)

I think you should check with an aquatic vet as soon as possible if you think the fish’s eyesight is at risk. There’s antibiotics you could try on your own if you live somewhere they are available over the counter but if you choose the wrong one your fish could go blind. The eye is too precious...

    Fish keeping absolutes

I don't count putting a tank back together after a move in the same category as fish-in cycling. When I say fish-in cycling I mean intentionally putting fish in a tank without any established filter media and letting the fish marinate in ammonia and nitrite for weeks while the beneficial...

    Fish keeping absolutes

What would be causing you to have only ammonium? A really low pH? Or because you’re adding in a detoxifier that converts the ammonia to ammonium? Either way, I know lower water pH causes more ammonia to convert to the ammonium form but I don’t think that means there’s zero ammonia present. And...

    Fish keeping absolutes

Fish in cycling could only be “fine” if you think it’s fine to subject fish to undue stress. With even the best fish in cycling technique there will still be a certain amount of ammonia and nitrite that builds up in the water between water changes. So you’re knowingly putting your fish into a...

What’s the coolest place you’ve travelled to?

I guess everyone's different. Pretty sure I won't ever lose my desire to see more of the world. And then there are those who never leave the 100 mile radius around where they were born and don't seem to have any desire to. (Not saying there's anything wrong with that just that it's hard for me...

What’s the coolest place you’ve travelled to?

Carpe diem! Unfortunately the coolest places in the world also tend to be the most expensive too 😅 Plus a lot of people feel the need to stay close to family. Then there’s the issue of not necessarily speaking the same language or being able to get a decent job wherever you’d like to move…...

What’s the coolest place you’ve travelled to?

Yes Siena is great! Another medieval town preserved in time. Except it’s actually still fully functional apart from tourism—no doubt part of the appeal. I opted to stay a few nights in Siena to see the Tuscany area instead of staying in Florence like many people do and just took a day trip to...

    Questions about Cory Fry/Please help!

Yeah I would drop the frozen cube in a cup of tank water and once it’s melted I would suck it up in the turkey baster and shoot it close to where the fry are on the bottom. The bacteria in a bottle don’t usually have a very good shelf life but I’m not aware of any harmful effect it would have...

What’s the coolest place you’ve travelled to?

Oh wow I bet that was intense. I visited in 2014 a couple of weeks before the bombing. I was very intrigued by the call to prayer that played a few times a day from the mosques. All of the places I had been up to that point were pretty much in Europe so I had never experienced that before.

    Questions about Cory Fry/Please help!

I agree that the nitrite is the main problem. I don’t remember that you gave a value for ammonia but if there is any ammonia present that would be harmful as well. The main way of preventing problems with ammonia and nitrite from harming your fry would be to either raise them in a breeder net...

What’s the coolest place you’ve travelled to?

It’s hard for me to pick just one. In the running: The “old city” of Jerusalem—such an amazing mix of religions and cultures. The sights, sounds, and smells were intoxicating. The abandoned city of Petra in Jordan—it’s an ancient city carved into the red desert rock. Need I say more? The city...

Treatment resistant fin rot in guppies. Potential med?

From Seachem’s website: “ParaGuard™ is the only fish and filter safe aldehyde based (10% by weight) parasite control product available (for parasites on fish). Unlike highly toxic and difficult to use formalin based medications, ParaGuard™ contains no formaldehyde or methanol and will not alter...

Whats wrong with my Seachem prime is it supposed to have black spots in it ? I just opened it.

Strange. Mine hasn't ever had black specks. Seems like they would tell you on the packaging that it's normal. They do bother to say that the sulfur smell is normal on the packaging. Do the black specks dissolve when you shake it?

    Eggs... empty?

You should be able to tell within a day or so. Unfertilized eggs will turn white. Fertilized ones turn a light greyish color. If they're not fertilized then for whatever reason there was no sperm to fertilize them (either no fertile males in tank/female laid them solo or male and female weren't...

    Missing loach

Double check the inside of your filter too. One of mine somehow swam against the cascading current into my hang on back filter (the inlet was covered). I had heard they could get into crazy places but that was just hard to believe. I made sure to keep my water level lower after that.

    An interesting question/debate...

I agree as far as the indigenous peoples go. I think the contempt is directed more towards educated people who think it’s just a conspiracy. That would have to be one hell of a conspiracy.

    Help with small corydora's

Make sure you pick an an antibiotic that treats internal infections. Kanamycin would be first choice for fish that are not eating. Otherwise use another antibiotic that is labeled for treating septicemia. Only use 75% of the labeled dose for cories because they are sensitive to medications.

    Help with small corydora's

If you decide to treat with medications I suggest only treating the affected fish in a separate quarantine tank. Putting the meds into the main tank could damage your biological filter. If it is actually an infection it seems like it would have to be an opportunistic one since you haven’t...

Treatment resistant fin rot in guppies. Potential med?

I can’t say whether or not it’s fin rot but if you decide to treat again you could try Seachem’s Paraguard. I’m pretty sure it’s available in the UK and would be worth a try for fin rot in earlier stages that is only external (hasn’t moved inside the body yet). It’s mild on fish too compared to...

37 gl tank, how many fish I can put in!!!! 9 fishes now but the tank looks empty!!!

I believe many gouramies sold in pet stores are male because the females are not very colorful and don’t sell as well. They also tend to be territorial so you may run into problems keeping 2 males together in one tank. Though 37 gallons might be big enough if there are sufficient plants and...

Black sand for Corydoras and Plants?

Flourite is a nice looking sand but I agree it’s too rough for bottom dwelling fish. I wanted a black sand for one of my Cory tanks as well. I had difficulty finding one smooth enough so I gave up and went with a natural looking sand by CaribSea.

A little under 1ppm ammonia after a 100% water change

I agree that water that is free of ammonia and nitrite is healthier for fish than water where the ammonia and nitrite was rendered nontoxic by adding in additional chemicals. It’s my personal opinion though that it is better to add in the additional chemical than to put the fish into the tank...
