    New lfs parasite advice

Yeah, you were the one that suggested it. I just have no idea what to try except this Paraguard but I don't even know if that will work.

    New lfs parasite advice

I thought it was too much salt...and I knew about the heat because I've treated ich that way before. Maybe I should try to start at the beginning on way I'm not sure if it's planaria or something else. Bought water lettuce off of ebay. Put it in all tanks then (a 5 gal, 2 10 gals, and a 20...

    New lfs parasite advice

We finally now have a local fish store. Salt and fresh. The lady has been maintaining people's tanks as well for 24 years and the store is just over a year old. She never advertised but I saw an article in the local paper and went to check it out. She has amazing looking fish! Very healthy from...

    Filter for 5 gal.

Dr's foster and smith is a great place to get sponge filters. They have multiple sizes available and I've been happy with every purchase. Also, they come with an extra filter sponge in case you ever need one. Here is the link...

    Blue gourami in 20 gal?

Awesome! Thanks so much Byron! You've helped me out tons so I hope my tanks can be successful when I get them set up! I plan on getting my 20 cleaned out soon and I will set it up with plants for a bit before getting fish. I just hope I can be successful with the plants. Lol. Thanks again...

    Blue gourami in 20 gal?

Thanks again Byron! I do believe I will try these then as I want them to be as happy as possible. I will cross my fingers in hope that whatever blue gourami I end up with that it won't bother them. Lol. But if it does....in my 55 that I plan to keep glow light tetras and harlequin rasboras, I am...

    Blue gourami in 20 gal?

One more question....I was researching more on the gourami and it seems like it may need higher temps? Like 78 or so? I was reading the other post on the cories and peppered cories might not be best at that temp. What do you think of sterbai instead? Seems they like better parameters than the...

    Blue gourami in 20 gal?

Thanks again. I can always have a ten gallon set up on standby in case of aggression. Would 6 cories be OK in a ten for a while by themselves? If the gourami couldn't handle them I can always put the cories in the ten until my 55 was ready. But it could take a while for that.

    Blue gourami in 20 gal?

Thanks Byron. I figured it would be only one but thought I'd ask to be sure. Do you think the cories might be OK though since they are more bottom dwelling fish than the gourami? I would get them first and then the gourami later.

    Blue gourami in 20 gal?

I still keep going back and forth on stocking ideas for my 20 high. I will be planting it with a sword, lots of crypts, dwarf sag or pygmy chain sword, maybe wisteria, and a floating plant either frogbit or water lettuce (probably the latter). My pH is 8.2, gh and kh around 12-13 ish (number of...

    Moving tanks

If it's the same water parameters for both tanks and you make sure they are the same temperature...I would just get a small bucket of water from the 90 gallon and take it over to the other tank. Net the fish into the bucket and then dump into the 90. There isn't really a need to acclimate unless...

Resealed tank, things to look for?

I would say bubbles in the silicone would be the main thing. Just make sure to let it cure long enough(you may have done that already). But one thing is....if it does leak, you will have to completely redo it all again as the fresh silicone won't stick to what you did already.

Algae algae go away come again.....never please.

The issue is some sort of light/nutrient imbalance. You are what has to find the imbalance and fix it. There could be multiple issues that need fixed. Byron gave you very good advice but we can't narrow it down more than that. You have to find it as each tank is different. So...since you...

Algae algae go away come again.....never please.

I know you've gotten a lot of helpful replies on your other thread. But one thing you have to remember is this...have patience! The algae didn't apear overnight and it won't go away that fast either. Basically...you have an imbalance of light and nutrients. Algae issues can be difficult to treat...

    Bottled bacteria

What is your tank setup? Size, kinds and numbers of fish, live plants, water change schedule, type of filter and biomedia, and the like. This could have an impact.

    resealing tank

You really have to redo all of it, the sealing that is. I actually have rebuilt a 55 myself. I suggest buying a scraper type of razor blade, not a box knife. That way you can get a very small holder that will definitely help hold the blade. Plus...lots of blades! Now....my tank had been redone...

stocking my 55 gallon freshwater aquarium, thoughts?

Sorry for the bad news. Most people put them in small tanks or bowls and they stop growing, or so it seems. It's actually a myth that fish only grow to the size of the tank. They might look like they've stopped on the outside but their internal organs and such still grow and they usually have...

stocking my 55 gallon freshwater aquarium, thoughts?

Goldfish don't stay small. And they are very messy fish and need really good filtration and tank maintenance. Here is a link to live aquaria and their info on them. http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=830+835+2743&pcatid=2743 Minimum this says is 30 gallons. That's for one...

    "Loose" Amazon Biotope

Just a little side note about tannins...they actually don't cloud your water at all. It's only tinted, but still perfectly clear. When I changed my substrate from gravel to sand...I couldn't stand the "clean" water look as it was just so bright. The tannins seemed to help the coloration of the...

    New tank

I would suggest 50% once a week at least for water changes. Also right now you should probably test it at least twice a week and honestly do water changes when ammonia and or nitrite is up at all. Nitrate you want to keep under 20ppm. Do read that article about cycling. It does have a part on...

Pictures of new lighting and my plants

Like we said in other threads, it's all about balance between light and nutrients. We can't say exactly what's what. You kind of have to figure it out for yourself. Also, changes can take time. So I recommend to do one change at a time and give it at least 2-4 weeks to see results.

LED good enough to grow these plants?

For a small tank a desklamp could work just fine if you get a good bulb(within some of the parameters that have been discussed already). LEDs can work as well. You just have to find the right one for your situation. Don't forget that it's not just the light itself that grows the plants. It's...

LED good enough to grow these plants?

I had the 16 inch stingray in my 5 1/2 gallon. It grew plants but also a lot of hair algae and cyanobacteria as well. My tank most definitely wasn't balanced. I think it's a bit too much for the lower light plants I had(anubias and crypt wendtii). It did grow dwarf sag good until the other stuff...
  26. cowgirluntamed

    How to plant crypts?

I agree on all points. Lol. at least with the wendtii, I've noticed that if planted closer together, it grows taller and more upright. If planted a ways apart, it will stay lower to the substrate. And sort of lay over it.

    Angelfish with Dwarf Cichlids?

If you can post a link to the site, someone may be able to look it up for you. as for keeping the fish successfully before...that may or may not help(thrive versus survive basically). I don't actually have experience with the fish but I've looked them up before. German blue ram are pretty...

    Angelfish with Dwarf Cichlids?

Do you have the gh (general hardness) of your water? Some of the dwarf cichlids have different requirements for hardness and can be more sensitive. PH doesn't always give the whole picture. If you are on city water then your water authority may have a website you can find this info from.

    I need help curing a betta's ich...

I know the recommended temp is 86 F. I want to say salt is one tablespoon per 5 gallons. (One tablespoon equals three teaspoons I think.) But hopefully someone else will chime in on the salt amount as I'm not for sure.

Question for people with lots of snails....

Absolutely do not put them in the pond! As Byron said(though I know he mentioned assassin's) snails can reproduce quickly. Just think...How much more food do you think the pond has for snails? Tons! It would get overrun even if the perch and other fish ate some. Never release something that's...

    Aquaclear setup Qs

Not that you said what you actually meant then. Filter stuff can be confusing. As for your filter, glad it works for you. What I meant is actual flow with the filter filled with media. They mostly test them empty and give you that flow. Most do not test with media in them, not to mention...

Question for people with lots of snails....

Don't throw them out in your pond alive! They are probably not native and could wreak havoc on an ecosystem. I go for getting them out and salting them. I did that for my pond snail problem. No smashing involved. Just get a real high concentration of salt and water in a separate bowl. When you...

    Aquaclear setup Qs

DutchMuch I think you need to do a bit more research. With a 75 gallon tank with substrate, decor, and the like, you don't actually HAVE 75 true gallons of water. Heck most tanks say they are a certain size and even empty they don't necessarily hold what they say they do. And flow does matter...

    Shelving for tank?

I honestly wouldn't use a metal rack for a ten gallon. As like snailpocolypse, I did have a 5 gallon on one. But I won't do a ten. For one thing, it's on the top. The possibility of tipping could be easier. But mostly it's the thin wires of the shelves themselves I would worry about. They are...

Neon tetras not surviving in my tank! Other suggestions?

I've kept glowlight tetras and my water is similar to yours, but a bit harder actually. Lol. Aquaclear setup Qs

I wasn't really thinking of over filtering the tank really. I just wasn't sure which would be best for it, hence the questions! Lol. The thought on having two filters instead of one was to have one have a lot of the polyfil in it to help polish the water. Would a 50 and a 30 be ok for that then...
