    Fishless cycling

Is that your aquarium water test or your tap water?
  11. OldTimeFisher

    Fishless cycling

Looks like 0.0 on all 3 of them. How long have you been cycling your aquarium now?

In my opinion, the Hygger works just as well as the Python does. The Python is a much nicer vacuum but is much more expensive. Now that is just for the vacuum only setups. For your needs with a small tank the Hygger will do just fine for less money. But, the decision is up to you. I'm very happy...

The bacteria resides on the substrate and the filter media. Cleaning the substrate and preforming water changes will not harm the bacteria. 😉

    Fishless cycling

Yes, I do have that one. I have used it for a few years now and it is still working very well.

    Fishless cycling

Both, to do just a water change just keep the tube above the substrate. It also has a clip so you can regulate the water flow by pinching the hose with it.
  16. OldTimeFisher

    Fishless cycling

Yes, the tube is in 2 separate pieces. Use 1 tube for smaller tanks or both for a deeper tank.

You can boil it but there is really no need to do so. Just wash and scrub it with tap water.

    Fishless cycling

Wash it under tap water really good and scrub it. No soap or chemicals.

Keep us posted on your progress and please ask any questions that you may have. Also find out what your source water kH and GH is before adding any fish. You can have a LFS test your source water for you or test it yourself. If a LFS does the testing, make sure that they give you the test...

Just make sure to declorinadinate any water prior to adding it to your aquarium.

    Fishless cycling

Ok good, then your all set for now to start your fish less cycle. You will need a heater at some point also before buying the fish.

    Fishless cycling

I can understand your confusion because I'm getting confused lol. Do as @Essjay has recommended above and you will be just fine. If you use the Dr Tim's ammonium chloride to cycle with you will also be just fine in doing so. You will have plenty of time to decide on what fish you want while the...

    Dry leaves for tank floor

You can safely use oak Quercus robur, sessile oak Q. petraea, Turkey oak Q. cerris, red oak Q. rubra, European beech Fagus sylvatica, hawthorn Crataegus monogyna, Japanese maple Acer palmatum and Indian Almond leaves. The cones from European alder Alnus glutinosa can be used also. All these have...

Hello and thanks for the advice in advance.

I agree with @Byron. It is essential to know your well water KH, GH and the pH. I would recommend against using your saltwater testing kit for freshwater. Saltwater master test kits are very different from a freshwater test kit. I would recommend getting a API freshwater test kit. You will also...

Thanks @Byron. I also have a QT tank that is cycling right now that I will permanently run with plants.

Hello and thanks for the advice in advance.

I'm in the same boat as you are. I just recently converted my 90g reef tank into freshwater 2 weeks ago. I am on well water too, very soft water. Also with no softener. My tap water results are as follows; pH 8.7 to 8.9 GH 2 KH 8 Ammonia 0.0 Nitrite 0.0 Nitrate 0.0 I have driftwood in my tank...

    Best equipment for a 10g?

Yes, you can even have the plexiglass cut into 2 pieces like the glass ones are. Front piece smaller then the back piece so you can feed with out removing the whole piece.

    Best equipment for a 10g?

Amazon has a 10g LED hood for $48. Tetra LED Aquarium Hood, Low Profile, Energy Efficient Hood with Lighting https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BQKQ4T4/?tag=ff0d01-20 Or, you can get a piece of plexiglass and have it cut to size at any hardware store.

I have another question @Byron. Would Poecilia winggei / Endlers be an option for me?

    90g Planted Aquarium Journal

Thanks @Byron. You have been very helpful. I think that I may forego the Pencilfish and stay with a school of Penguin Tetras. And I do like the Bleeding Hearts also!

    90g Planted Aquarium Journal

I will scratch off the Silvertips then. I agree that I don't want the risk. I will also scratch the Embers and increase the amount of the other Tetras. Would the Penguin fish be ok with any of the Pencilfish you listed Byron? I will rethink the Bolivian Ram then. What other South America fish...

    Java fern question

In that case, I wouldn't cut them just yet. Place/affix them where you want them in your aquarium for now and let them settle in first before stressing them out more. Wait until there is adequate new growth before cutting them.

    Java fern question

A aqua scissors with the upward bent blades will make this task easy. Just reach into the tank and cut off the longer stems as close to the base of the plant as you can without damaging the rest of the plant. I also find it easier to shut off the filtration while preforming this task. Then...

    Floating plant suggestions/photos

No C02 at all. The leaves and roots will turn blood red under high lighting. Under low lighting, they will stay a lite reddish to pink. The leaves are green and pink with a tinge of red under my current light intensity. Its actually a floating fern from South America.
