I'm super excited to see what you do!
I too have a fluval edge and very much enjoy it.
I can't help with the question but I know Byron can (he can do anything, he's a superhero).
But I can be a cheerleader for your progress...and I will!
I hope you post a step by step!
OMG! haha, it looks like you put a tiny condensed plant in there and when it hit the water it just exploded and is taking up every inch of your tank!
You're going to have to give your fish little hatchets so they can chop their way thru the forrest!!!
This is great! I'm glad you've gotten your...
I think I always lumped all cichlids together, thinking they were all hard.
I always thought cichlids lived in brackish water....which I assumed meant it was hard.
I should know by now, to never assume anything when it comes to fish!
OMG you built that (and the other) stand s??!?!
They are stunning!
You should build custom stands for people!!
Amazing work! And the tank looks beautiful too! ....as did your other one!
yay, boo...haha
I had to laugh at the last line.
sure was an eventful week.
They'll figure it out...like mentioned above, I've also heard this can happen to their first brood.
Wow....so interesting!
I hope someone gives it a go.
....and I have to ask, seeing your screen name "twisted Helix"...
did you watch the TV series a few years back "Helix" about scientists for Disease Control?
It was excellent (I thought so anyway).
Oh man, I'm sorry to hear this.
What a tragedy.
But like Steven said, even if you're PH matches ...the GH and KG might be quite different (I've learned all of this the hard way).
I hope you can save some of them and remedy the problem.
Good luck and again sorry for the stress (for you and the...
Yes, It's amazing how much area those little snails can cover...and clean!
I only have one so you must really be amazed!
I'm sure your shrimps will come out of their shells (literally also...remember they shed....that scared the crap out of me the first time I saw the empty carcass)!
I keep trying to see your overflow to figure out how they're getting in there but I can't make anything out.
Hopefully you can remedy that!
I had that issue with my intake hose.
I keep such tiny inhabitants they could get sucked right in there.
I remedied that with a sponge filter pad over...
Just gorgeous!
My nerite took a while to come out and about but now he's super busy all the time!
The amount of space he covers in just a few minutes is mind boggling!
And my Amano is by far the busiest creature I've ever seen!
Oh man what a beautiful home!!!!
They're gorgeous colors too!
I'd certainly let the fry fend for themselves....it will be fun to see who may pop up in the future!
Although I know that's hard to do as I know myself ...I'd be glued to the tank trying desperately to keep my eyes on all the babies...
Ohhhh what stunners! They're just beautiful!
Looks like all 6 in the pic! So I'm assuming they're doing well?
I spied some nerites also!
And one shrimp....amano? I couldn't quite tell but it looked colorless.
They've been a HUGE help! I'd be so lost if it weren't for a few in particular.
If it weren't for them, I'd still be running my water thru the stupid softer wondering why the ph is ever changing!
You can always google a question but to be able to come here and know that someone you trust has...
Well hello! And wow Analytical Chemist! That hurts my brain to even consider what you must do in a day!
But I'm excited to see what kind of advice and help you have to offer and selfishly would love to hear what you'd have to say about my water chemistry!
I have a topic going here titled "if...
Aw, I'm sorry. He looked like he was very pretty in his better days.
Guppies are very weak these days which is a shame because they're so darn gorgeous!
He's swimming in a better place now.
Kudos to you for keeping such a healthy tank and knowing you're parameters so well.
I'm sure you gave him...
I've read this a bunch of times.
I'm having a hard time making this compute in my brain, but I think I see what you're saying....
GH and KH don't change drastically at and above a ph of 7
but in the very low PH numbers it can swing greatly?
I still don't think my direct well water is extremely...
don't feel bad, we've ALL done it. We want the fish we want to watch.
If we have the know how and the drive to keep them as happy as well possibly can I don't see the harm in it unless they wind up suffering.
Mine never appeared to suffer at all but they never lived very long lives and I have...
I still don't remember this happening and did go back thru my notes to find where my well water changed as it sat out. The only thing I can find that this happened with was a bucket of Tap Water that had run thru the softer.
Every test I've found that I've done the Well water tested the lowest...
Man this looks fantastic!
As for you're parameters I will throw out a little suggestion as I've learned along the way.
I have soft water, that has fluctuating PH due to my well water running thru a "softer" that buffers the PH.
I always kept harder water fish because when I originally...
Omgoodness! I'd fallen so behind on reading this thread (which is very interesting with the ph/gh/kh that I struggle with also and how to adjust).
You've gotten fish!! Yay, well, not yay as I saw in the last post they might be struggling a bit.
If it is ich, it's relatively easy to correct...
I will definitely be purchasing these in the future! I'll also look into mineral blocks and chola wood...
I just need to be sure they don't have any sort of affect on the water itself.
Hey guys! I was away for a few days and just getting back.
First time I left my tank on a timer for lights...I was scared to come home and find it covered with algae or worse.
All was well though!
As much as I like the look of blackwater in some tanks (usually bigger Amazonian looking Jungle...
I just did this and it appears to be exactly the same as the outgassed?!
Is that odd?
It seems to be a 6 but quickly fades to a 5.
I have only anubias species and another above substrate root plant.....maybe a crypt?
and some old amazon sword that's slowly dying out.
the large anubias leaves...
Ok, so I'm super Duper excited!!!
I got my little test thingy to test low PH.
I used the well water that's been outgassing since sunday (4 days).
It sure seems to be the same color as the 6, but fades to the color of the 5 after a few seconds BUT it does say to read immediately after. (oh and...
I absolutely love these little fish but someone warned me against them when I first came to this site....I think they said I'd need too many and or they're just too active for my tiny tank?
They are super beautiful though!!!!
My two biggest obsessions right now are:
1. Boraras Brigitte
2...
I'm super excited to see this come about!!
I was also psyched to see Byron stop in and show some of his tanks!
He's a wealth of knowledge and keeps gorgeous tanks/fish!
Good Luck!
Post pics as you go!!
This is not the case. I did go back to try and find where you read this and I'm still unsure but I can tell you that I've had my straight from well water in a bucket since Sunday evening and it hasn't gone over the 6 mark in the ph testing. Still reads the lowest mark.
Those strips you lead me...
I placed that order and by the time it arrives my "fresh from the well water, that I got last night" will have been outgassing for a few days.
I just tested it now about 15 hours later and
the PH is reading the lowest level.
And everything else is zero except for the KH which is 25.
I'm...
Ok...so they're in my shopping cart.
Looks like people use these to test the levels in humans and products with these?
And that they aren't spot on like the fish tests?
These test the whole range from 1-14 but will only tell which number we are.
So, if my water is a 5.7 it will only come up a...
wwhhaattt?! I did?! OMG that's a big jump!!! That can't be right I'll definitely do this again!
And thanks for the link on the ph paper!! Going to check out right now!
It's "ppm"
this is definitely my goal!
I'd be totally fine with that as a minor adjustment.
Oh man....here I thought raising my ph was enough to keep my endlers happy and instead I'm torturing them. Ugh! Terrible fish Mom.
I'll try to do better with my next batch which will hopefully be...
