Curious as to what other hobbies you guys have ?

Hah, there are a few ways to felt. The easiest way is to get a premade item like your scarf and shrink it on purpose with water, heat and rubbing. Washing machine do this easily but the results are really unpredictable. Other ways use cleaned and combed wool ‘roving’ which can be shaped dry with...

Curious as to what other hobbies you guys have ?

I want to say that I knit, crochet, felt, paint, sew(badly), read a lot of novels, garden and grow veg, cook, bake, ferment, preserve fruit, and mountain walk. In truth I just tidy up after toddlers and stare into space whenever I have free moment trying to remember what I needed to get done and...

    Cyanobacteria/ slime algae advice

Thankyou byron. I have done a thorough clean on the tank and a 75% water change. I was surprised how much debris was dislodged from the substrate, I usually don’t do substrate deep cleans as I have cryptocorynes which I’ve heard don’t like it but I can change that. I hope it works.

    Cyanobacteria/ slime algae advice

Hello. I have slime growing out of control in my planted tank. Last week I tried a blackout period of two consecutive 48 hour periods with a water change in between and it seemed to really help, but now it is back with a vengeance. I have removed some of the plants it was coating and added some...

    PH readings don’t match

I don’t usually test it either but I have recently completed a blackout treatment for slime algae and I wasn’t sure if it would affect the water quality.

    PH readings don’t match

Hiya. I just checked my water pH in my planted tank with my ntlab testing kit and it came up as over 8. I double checked it with universal indicator paper which came up at pH7. I usually get a reading of about 7.8 and my water provider states 7.59. should I assume that both readings are wrong?

Plants struggling in new set up

Some plants, particularly your vallis (third picture that looks a bit like eel grass) die if you add liquid carbon.

Green filament algae is getting me down.

Good tip. The tank is now covered in towels and the temperature is turned down. I might turn the air pump up a bit too. I did have a shrimp die a few days ago and one go missing and some of my bigger ramshorns have died. I hope the rest survive this.

Green filament algae is getting me down.

@utahfish thankyou. It had t occurred to me that it might not be that bad, looking at pictures the thick slime with gas bubbles trapped in it does seem to be Cyanobacteria. I will remove as much as possible and do a water change before the blackout. I have some anacharis in my daphnia jar so I...

Green filament algae is getting me down.

I have dozens of ramshorns and a couple of Malaysian trumpet snails. They seem to be dying off slowly as I don’t over feed in that tank.

Green filament algae is getting me down.

I have cut my lighting down to 6 hours, I add liquid ferts once a week and I try and remove as much as possible a couple of times a week. Does it ever resolve? I can only get gel capsule root tabs at the moment and they really spike the nitrate levels. I’m contemplating getting rid of my...

    Thinking about getting bantams.

I don’t think there are feed stores near me that sell chicks. My local pet shop breeds poultry that I can possibly arrange to pick up from their small holding now their shop isn’t stocking live animals, but I think it goes against the rules of the covid19 restrictions. I can buy hatching eggs...

    Thinking about getting bantams.

I like this as a plan. Of course I now have to secure permission from my landlord which should be easy enough...and wait for the quarantine to be lifted... I can get hatching eggs fairly easily by post but i think that is likely to be a weird game of chicken roulette for a beginner. If I could...

Can you actually buy fish online?

I use eBay and read the reviews that the seller has. Many sellers have 100% positive feedback and all the ones I have used have only shipped for an organised date and time. It can be expensive though and a £1.50 fish ships for £15

    Thinking about getting bantams.

Thankyou for letting me know, I think roosters are prohibited in my town, so I will try and find a seller with older sexed birds. Frazzles and d’uccles look nice and as they would be pets than temperament is most important. I think Silkies look cute too but a friend of mine with them recons they...

    Funny stories

As children me and my sisters had a Netherlands dwarf rabbit named lavender. Our father was a geography teacher and one day he was angry because an excercise book of one of his pupils had gone missing when he was marking homework. We found half of it under the dresser... He had to take the...

    Thinking about getting bantams.

Hello, I have been thinking about getting chickens lately but I don’t have a huge garden. It is small by local standards at about 30-35 sq meters but large by urban standards. Do i have enough space for maybe 3-4 small bantam type chickens? The garden is largely paved with rockery and terrace...

This is a picture of the two splits. To me it doesn’t look too bad yet so I’ll do my best to make sure it doesn’t get worse.

    Small tail splits

Hello everyone. My lovely betta appears to have a couple of small splits in his tail. I am aware of their delicate reputation but figured his tank was safe. His driftwood is smooth, his terracotta pot is sanded and has the hole enlarged. All his plants are real and he has an air driven sponge...

    Algae turned to slime

Hello. I’ve had a lot of green hair algae in my fish tank so I have cut down on my lighting from 10 hours to about 6-7. The algae has now collapsed into a shroud of green slime draping over my plants. It’s very hard to remove as it no longer has the strength of the filaments and it...

    Dead nertite snail??

Poor water quality maybe, which will get worse if you leave it in there. Or Old age, they are frequently sold as adults but with a life expectancy of 3 years they don’t always have long to live as you don’t know how old they really are. Another possibility is liquid carbon additives for plant...

What are some nuts I can use as caves in a blackwater setup?

eBay has some available from international sellers, they might sell to Sweden.... but it is expensive. In Britain they are sold for decorative purposes for shop displays and craft. Etsy also sells them but I don’t know if you have that site.

What are some nuts I can use as caves in a blackwater setup?

Cacao! If you can get cacoa pods that are organic than that would work. Wild cacao is all over the amazon. Avocado skins are tough but may beak down too fast. Coconut is not native but is now grown in almost every riverside settlement on the amazon nearly to its source so don’t feel too bad is...

    Guppy aggression

I have just two remaining male guppies out of 10, I call them blondie and ginge and they do not get on very well. Are there any small scary creatures?

Hydra are a bit like jellyfish. Damselfly nymphs are very predatory but they may need more space. Assassin snails like to suck the flesh from theirs algae eating cousins, scary if you are a snail.

Everything I always wanted to know about Java Fern & I'm not afraid to ask

I’ve got some surviving in my substrate, the rhizomes are above the gravel so aren’t rotting. The problem is the roots look like a big bunch of pubic hair. It looks much nicer and grows faster on my driftwood.
